[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! It’s me again! I just discovered the poll feature and it’s so cool!
So, here’s my big name issue. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name is [name_f]Annelie[/name_f]. It’s Nordic, means ‘grace’, and pronounced like ‘onna-lee’, NOT like ‘anna-lee’. I know sometimes this name is used as a variation of [name_f]Annalee[/name_f], which is frustrating. If I ever have a daughter, I would love to name her [name_f]Annelie[/name_f]. I’m just worried that she would get non-stop mispronunciations. So, what do you all think?
How often do you think [name_f]Annelie[/name_f] will be mispronounced?
- Not at all
- Maybe sometimes, but not often
- A lot, but people will get it when corrected once
- All the time
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I should have [name_f]Annelie[/name_f] as her middle name and have friends and family call her that, but give her a more common first name?
- Yes
- Seems too complicated
- Maybe have the more familiar option be the middle name?
Which middle name combinations do you like best?
- [name_f]Annelie[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
- [name_f]Annelie[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
Thanks for your help!!

The correct pronunciation is my default, anyway. It’s a lovely name, and people will quickly learn.

People can learn. [name_f]Annelie[/name_f] = [name_f]Onna[/name_f]-lee isn’t hard to remember. it’s a nice fn

Where I grew up this was a popular name and I always pronounced this as “[name_u]Anne[/name_u]-li”. Might be worth bearing in mind as that’s the most used pronunciation in many European countries at least, especially in the nordics where the “A” never makes an “O” sound.

Is this a family pronunciation? Where did it come from?
Now I’m not sure what pronunciation you want. Is it like on-uh-lee or like oh-nuh-lee? If its the first one, sort of like Anya, then no problem since that’s a common way to pronounce Anna anyway. The second one will need more correcting I’d think.

I think it could be easily corrected

Thanks for the votes and replies everyone!
@NorahBee That’s really funny! It is a family name, so I guess someone somewhere along the way made up the pronunciation. [name_f]My[/name_f] family does have a history of doing that. [name_f]My[/name_f] aunt is named Kjȅrŝti, (ignore the symbols, they’re for privacy) pronounced chair-stee, which is defiently not how the name is originally pronounced.
@hellobanjo Yep, it’s a family name, and I guess it is a family pronunciation. I pronounce it the first way
