Polly

I have recently started crushing on the name [name]Polly[/name]. It was my paternal grandma’s name (she’s deceased), and I just like the name. With [name]Molly[/name] being relatively popular, and nick-namey grandma names coming back, I feel [name]Polly[/name] could fit in. I also like the literary connection to the [name]Narnia[/name] books ([name]Polly[/name] is in The Magician’s Nephew)

However, I am not a fan of [name]Pauline[/name], her full name. She also didn’t like her name, so I wouldn’t want to bestow that on my child. I like [name]Polly[/name] on its own, but I like to have a full name in case the child doesn’t like the nn.

[name]Do[/name] you have any other full name options?

What do you think of [name]Polly[/name]?

Could it work on its own without a full name?

Also, would she get teased about the “[name]Polly[/name] Pocket” dolls? IDK if those are popular anymore!

Thank you so much for your feedback!

[name]Polly[/name] is sweet, and you can definitely use it on its own! [name]How[/name] about [name]Apolline[/name]?

I think [name]Polly[/name] could definitely stand alone.

Traditionally, [name]Polly[/name] would be a nn for [name]Mary[/name] (another of those [name]Margaret[/name]-[name]Peggy[/name] classic nns)

[name]Pollyanna[/name]
[name]Paloma[/name]
Poletta/Polete

Or if youre [name]Gwyneth[/name], I could see getting [name]Polly[/name] from [name]Apple[/name], haha.

I actually like it. If [name]Polly[/name] as a nn for [name]Mary[/name] is too much of a stretch for you (which at this point I think it may be), maybe use [name]Polly[/name] as mn with a more formal fn and call her [name]Polly[/name]?

I think [name]Polly[/name] can stand alone. But it’s more girlish than longform options.
I don’t think polly pocket is very popular these days.
[name]Polina[/name] is nice if it’s the ‘paul’ you’re not into.

Appolina could work or Leopoldina not my style but maybe yours?

If not [name]Polina[/name], maybe [name]Portia[/name]/[name]Porsha[/name] or [name]Opal[/name]?

If [name]Paulina[/name] is too much what about [name]Paula[/name]? I knew a super sweet girl with this name in grammar school.

[name]Pamela[/name]
[name]Paulette[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]

Peronel
[name]Penelope[/name]**
[name]Petronella[/name]
[name]Phillipa[/name]
[name]Philomena[/name]
[name]Priscilla[/name]
Polyna

I think [name]Polly[/name] could stand alone, I think it’s a pretty name and would like to see it make a come back!

Thanks everybody!

I have more confidence in [name]Polly[/name] now and would love to see it come back!

I like the suggestions of [name]Opal[/name], and I like [name]Paulina[/name] because of other nn [name]Lina[/name]. [name]Apolline[/name] is interesting, too. But I’m beginning to move towards [name]Polly[/name] on its own!

I also find [name]Polly[/name] from [name]Mary[/name] funny, because [name]Mary[/name] is my other grandma! But I think nowadays that’s too much of a stretch.

Again, thanks!

I love [name]Polly[/name]! It’s a total guilty pleasure of mine, and think its wonderful on it’s own!

So funny that this name turns up on the boards, I had to call someone at work and her name was [name]Polly[/name], and I was thinking at the time “Wow, [name]Polly[/name]; such an underused classic.” [name]Glad[/name] to see I’m not the only one!

I think [name]Polly[/name] could stand on its own. Not sure kids nowadays are playing with [name]Polly[/name] Pocket? But I don’t know many kids. I certainly remember them though! But this doesn’t bother me in the least.

I like a lot of the other suggestions, especially [name]Penelope[/name] was a more formal version to get to the nickname [name]Polly[/name]. But O also like [name]Opal[/name] and [name]Apolline[/name]. And [name]Polly[/name] on it’s own. I say use it, and it’s such a great way to honour your grandmother.

I think [name]Polly[/name] is going to the front of my list (for now at least)!

And I agree, it is such an underused classic.

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of [name]Polly[/name] as a nn for [name]Penelope[/name], how lovely!

I adore [name]Polly[/name], and I definitely think the name can stand on its own. [name]Polly[/name] is the perfect balance of spunky and sweet.

Obviously, I also like it; it’s on my Top Ten dream list–[name]Polly[/name] [name]Susanna[/name]. It’s such a sweet, yesteryear-ish sort of name.
Best wishes!

I have a crush on [name]Polly[/name] and one of my guilty pleasures is [name]Pollyanna[/name]. [name]Polly[/name] is sweet, spunky and full of life! I think it can be used on its own with all of the other “nicknames as first names”. My favourite combo is Polly Theodora. I like the blend of sweet and serious.

I don’t like [name]Pollyanna[/name], it’s too associated with the character for me. But others like that literary reference.

Any other thoughts? I love to hear people’s opinions!

[name]Polly[/name] is a nn for [name]Mary[/name]. It’s not a stretch because of it’s long history, same with [name]John[/name]/[name]Jack[/name]

My cousin [name]Polly[/name] is actually named [name]Mary[/name]. Our late great aunt [name]Mamie[/name] was named [name]Mary[/name]. I love [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Polly[/name] but not [name]Mary[/name]. I guess they could stand alone but I generally dislike nn names

I am in [name]LOVE[/name] with the name [name]Paloma[/name]… I can see [name]Polly[/name] being used as a nick name for it

I’m Polly, I love my name! My parents liked it because it was sweet, cheerful and non-offensive, I agree! My full name is Pollyanna, I don’t love it as much as just Polly but I still enjoy having a full name and a nickname.
Go for Polly…there aren’t many of us around.
Oh and I love the suggestion of Penelope nn Polly!
Good Luck!
Polly
P.S. I wouldn’t worry about the Polly-Pocket association, there are a lot of worse things to be associated with
