I’ve been thinking a lot about this name lately. It doesn’t top my list, but it’s up there. I think it’s absolutely adorable!
But my sisters insist that it’s a “bird name”, too old-fashioned, too childish, etc. The first association doesn’t bother me. And I love that it’s old-fashioned! But I do wonder if it is a little cutesy… Then again, it’s just Molly-with-a-P, and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] stands well enough on its own.
Anyway, I want to know:
What are all of your honest thoughts on [name_f]Polly[/name_f]? (Besides that it’s not your style or that you simply don’t like it.)
Is it too cutesy/childish? Does it need a formal name? [name_u]Or[/name_u] can it stand alone just fine?
I love [name_f]Polly[/name_f]! It reminds me of [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_m]Plummer[/name_m] in The Magician’s Nephew so I picture an adventurous sort of girl, old-fashioned children’s nurseries and secret passages, grass-stained knees and hair bows. There’s something brisk and charming about it.
That is a childlike image I suppose, but not cutesy exactly. I can see it being quite spunky-vintage on a teenage girl similar perhaps to something like [name_f]Betty[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. On an adult, I think it’s unexpected and perhaps a little (endearingly) posh.
I do think it can stand alone, as [name_f]Molly[/name_f] usually does these days. If you were looking for a full name, I like it as a nickname for [name_f]Apolline[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], or [name_f]Hippolyta[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is a gorgeous name with so much character that stands well on its own! Yes, it’s cute, but that’s part of the charm! [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_u]Holly[/name_u] and [name_u]Olly[/name_u] are all popular and never labelled as “too cutesy”, so why not [name_f]Polly[/name_f]?
I can definitely see it rising here in the UK as it fits in with other trending vintage choices like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f] and [name_u]Florence[/name_u]. I do know a little [name_f]Polly[/name_f] (and even a Dolly!) so it seems absolutely useable to me
I like [name_f]Polly[/name_f], sometimes cutesy is the darn point. I don’t necessarily think it requires a full name but if you want suggestions I’m fond of [name_f]Polyhymnia[/name_f] and Hypolyta if classical and dignified has to be a requirement for fun in certain circles/.
I’m guessing you’re more of a name enthusiast than your sisters, because you know this name is due for a comeback and that it is lovely! I think it stands alone just fine, and doesn’t need a “formal” name (just like [name_f]Molly[/name_f], as you said).
Not cutesy. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] strong enough for a woman to carry.
I’ve met an adult [name_f]Polly[/name_f], a child [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and a teenaged [name_f]Polly[/name_f], so for me it works for all ages! [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is charming, warm and lovely - it has a literary vibe and a sweetness but with slight kick.
I think it can stand alone
I would have loved to have had a [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. But I probably would have gone with [name_f]Polly[/name_f] itself lest she become a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or an [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], neither of which I would want.
It’s what I go by in English-speaking countries as it could be a nickname for my name; I’ve never felt it was cutesy or juvenile; maybe I’d feel differently at 40 or 50, but not right now in my twenties.
As a name, I really like it; it feels warm and approachable, fun and a bit cheeky.
I don’t think it needs a full name but I always appreciate having a choice, however, I’d only choose one I truly like. For [name_f]Polly[/name_f] I like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f].
I have a friend called [name_f]Polly[/name_f]! It is a gorgeous name. Although, I am from the UK, where [name_u]Holly[/name_u], [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] are all relatively common, especially in my area, it is easy to mishear [name_u]Holly[/name_u] in particular.
I do think [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is quite classy actually, it’s not a massively girly-princess name but instead rather classy and unique! However, I did grow up with [name_f]Peppa[/name_f] Pig and there was a parrot called [name_f]Polly[/name_f], but I don’t see the name and instantly think of that.
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is a delightful name! Spunky and cute, but I don’t think it’s too cutesy. I think it’s useable as a stand alone and works for any age. If you were looking for a full name my favourites would be [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hippolyta[/name_f].
