Pondering Dove/Dovie/Dovey and need some opinions

I really like the name Dovey and so does my fiance. There are some famous Doveys and Dovies we’d love to honor. We also like [name_u]Dove[/name_u] but it just feels so stilted somehow…especially in conjunction with our last name. What do you like better? [name_u]Dove[/name_u] or Dovey or do you like the spelling [name_f]Dovie[/name_f]? In what direction do you think I should go with a middle name? Classic like Dovey [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] or more unique like Dovey [name_f]Marceline[/name_f]? If it’s just [name_u]Dove[/name_u], what would you pair it with? If you don’t like the name at all, that’s fine, but please tell me why. Blunt honesty is appreciated, but nms does not really help at all. Thank you!

I’d stick it in the middle. [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] (from your signature) would be lovely. You can call her [name_f]Dovie[/name_f], but then she has an adult name to use after childhood. I find [name_u]Dove[/name_u]/Dovey to be too cutesy for adulthood or even high school.

I think I like [name_u]Dove[/name_u] better than [name_f]Dovie[/name_f] or Dovey; but use one of them as a nickname.

(These are from your sig)
[name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Pheobe[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_u]Simone[/name_u]

I think [name_u]Dove[/name_u] might work better with a middle name that starts with a vowel.

To me, [name_f]Dovie[/name_f]/Dovey sounds like a pet name – not for pets, but like naming a child Sweetie or [name_f]Honey[/name_f] or Pumpkin. However, people use the name Darling, so it’s not outrageous.

I think [name_u]Dove[/name_u] works well, and my only hesitation with that would be how much it’s associated with the cosmetics/beauty company, at least in the U.S. But that’s not really a negative association, and the association with the bird is definitely stronger.

Thank you all for your feedback. I do like [name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]. We could put [name_u]Dove[/name_u] in the middle name spot, too. Any other thoughts?

I would put it in the middle name spot or just use it as a nickname. I agree that it sounds like a pet name you call a child. I think it would be hard to pull off as a formal name, especially for an adult. Would make a really unique, cool middle name though. [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] sounds beautiful.

Since I’m Jewish I’m very familiar with the male name [name_m]Dov[/name_m] (it actually means bear). I know a few men and boys with this name. [name_u]Dove[/name_u] for a girl, I don’t think I could get used to it. Also, it doesn’t feel like a name to me. I’m all for nature names, but [name_u]Dove[/name_u] isn’t one of my favourites.
I’d go for [name_u]Dove[/name_u] in any case, not [name_f]Dovie[/name_f]. It would be a cute nickname though. I’d put it in the middle spot.

What do you all think of the name [name_f]Dovizia[/name_f] nn Dovey?

I actually really like [name_f]Dovie[/name_f] as a first name… It seems so 1940s to me which I love. I get why people say it should be a middle tho…it’s seriously adorable so I would stick with it in some way!

Maybe in the middle.

I like it as a first name!

[name_u]Dove[/name_u] is one of my faves! Dovey/[name_f]Dovie[/name_f] is a cutesy pet name to me, like Sweetie or [name_f]Lovey[/name_f]. Have you considered [name_f]Doveva[/name_f]? It’s like smushing [name_u]Dove[/name_u] & [name_f]Eva[/name_f] (ev-ah, not ee-va).

[name_f]Dovie[/name_f] is very turn of the century chic, lol. [name_f]Every[/name_f] [name_f]Dovie[/name_f] I’ve ever come across was born in the 1890s-1910s. I agree with @nat108; it feels like you’re naming your daughter [name_f]Honey[/name_f] or Sweetie. However, I do like [name_u]Dove[/name_u] as a given name. There is the association with the cosmetics line, but as somebody else said the bird is always going to be a more prominent association. I don’t think [name_u]Dove[/name_u] is any more or less usable than Nameberry’s darling [name_u]Wren[/name_u].

I like [name_u]Dove[/name_u] OK - it’s not my favourite because I can’t imagine it on a really outgoing person and I tend to prefer names that I can see working on many personality types. I think the image doves have of being sweet, peaceful creatures would bleed into my expectations of what a person named [name_u]Dove[/name_u] would be like, but I’m sure I’d get used to it if I got to know the person and it’d just be her name, if that makes sense.

I could see a ton of middle names going with it - I’d lean toward a longer one (like [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] or [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] that you mention) since it’s so short-but-sweet - [name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] comes to mind, based on your list, or [name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_u]Simone[/name_u], or [name_u]Dove[/name_u] [name_f]Natalia[/name_f].

I’m a lot less fond of [name_f]Dovie[/name_f]/Dovey for a similar reason as someone mentioned above - it sounds like a pet name like [name_f]Honey[/name_f] to me. I’d use [name_u]Dove[/name_u] as the first or middle name and [name_f]Dovie[/name_f] as the nickname.
