Pondering these new additions

WDYT of any or all of these girl names? They’ve been on my mind recently and I’m considering adding them to my list. Whatever thoughts or impressions you have, I’d love to hear them! :revolving_hearts:

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] (dag-nee)
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - my only pause here is my parents were fans of *Friends * back during its heyday so I think they’d associate it with the character. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you, or does it matter?

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - [name_f]Love[/name_f]! It’s a real standout with its distinct sound, but not at all weird, and very familiar because of names like [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - [name_f]Super[/name_f] pretty! The many nickname possibilities are all adorable and make it very wearable, even while being so elegant

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - A nice name, it’s more of a “safe” choice, but I can’t find fault with it! And [name_f]Georgie[/name_f] is such a cute nickname on a girl as well (:

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - Cool, international and fresh, I totally get why this one is so trendy on NB! I also love the balance of the feminine [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- beginning with the very bold, slightly more masculine -en ending

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - A bit frumpy to me unfortunately, but I quite like [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f]!

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - Such a gem of a name! So sweet and vintage, and the nicknames are really versatile, from the cool [name_f]Win[/name_f], to the adorable [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and the spunky [name_f]Freddie[/name_f].

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - Maybe my favourite on this list, I just love how bubbly and sunny she feels! :sunny: I don’t associate it with Friends, since I’ve met a few real life Phoebes, so it doesn’t feel any more “Friends” to me than, say, [name_m]Ross[/name_m]. It’s currently quite popular in many English-speaking countries so I don’t think the association is a problem!

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] → distinctive, rugged, but bright and golden too

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] → literary, clunky-cool, bold and sophisticated but with fun nn options too

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] → solid and charming; [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], [name_f]Gia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgie[/name_f] make it feel versatile. It’s classic but no dated

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] → which pronunciation do you use? Mare-un (or mair-un) feels windswept and earthy, cosy jumpers and flyaway hair. Mah-run feels international, sleek, sharp.

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] → it’s a solid choice, classic but underused; I just find it a bit harsh

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] → clunky-cute, old lady vibes. I don’t live the sounds together, but it’s growing on me

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] → bright, light and bubbly with substance - I’ve met so many Phoebes I wouldn’t associate it with friends

Dagny-Very Norwegian. [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Sonja[/name_f] of Norway’s mother’s name was [name_f]Dagny[/name_f].
Dorothea-The original Greek version of [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. While I think it’s a beautiful name, many people today would say it is very, very dated.
Georgia-Makes me think of the painter [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] O’Keefe as well as fresh [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] peaches. Very beautiful.
Maren-Not really my style, but that’s just my preference.
Ruth-I like it as a first name, preferably with a longer middle name that doesn’t have a “th” in it. However, I like it better as a middle name with a 2+ syllable first name that doesn’t have a “th” in it.
Winifred-Makes me think of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_m]Banks[/name_m] in [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Poppins. I like it though.
Phoebe-I actually know two young women named [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and I do not think of the TV show Friends. However, I have never seen Friends.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] are my favourites (I like [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] as a middle).

The only association I have with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is with one I went to school with (she might be around my age, so still young). I don’t associate it with friends as I don’t watch it.

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f]: very cool, might be hard for a real person to pull off though, at least where I live. I like it better for a character, pet or middle name

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]: I get an old lady wearing pastels and enjoying a tea party vibes

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]: this name is so bright, sunny, lively, happy and bubbly to me :sunny:

[name_f]Maren[/name_f]: buttoned-up, serious, kind but in a chilly sort of way

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]: similar vibes to [name_f]Maren[/name_f] but feels stronger and more historical

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]: I have never cared for the sound of this name, I’m not sure if it’s all the time I’ve spent on nameberry lately but it’s starting to grow on me just a little bit. Absolutely love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] though!

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]: I do think of Friends but [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] doesn’t feel exclusive to it. It feels cute and bubbly but also a little whimsical with its moon goddess meaning.

@Greyblue I’m using the pronunciation Mair-un (mare sounding like the word for a horse)

I’m glad to hear Phoebe doesn’t sound totally tied to the TV show, because it seems lovely and upbeat. My family can be a bit opinionated about names so I can’t help but anticipate what they’d say, even if I wouldn’t let them keep me from using a name I love.

ETA: Re: Dagny, I like that it’s got that Scandinavian background because there’s some heritage on both sides from that region (I’m a mutt with pretty much all countries present and donor is Belgian-Danish)

I totally get what you mean about [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]. Popularity is something I’m still trying to decide how much I care about. There’s names from all over the charts in my favorites so I almost need to decide if I want to lean a certain way- something unusual or familiar.

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts on your list

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] ~ she’s a spirited fairy name that feels intriguing and whimsical. I like the meaning ‘new day’ it feels like the perfect option for a new year baby!

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] ~ I absolutely love [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]! She’s warm, nostalgic, cosy and whimsical. I love the nicknames [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Dotty[/name_f], [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] they are so fun. I have [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] [name_f]Winter[/name_f] [name_f]Janet[/name_f] on my list.

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] ~ personally I’m not a fan of [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] I just find the overall sound a little jarring for me. I’ve never been a fan of [name_f]George[/name_f] or her variants. But I can see the appeal she’s classic and rather bubbly.

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] ~ timeless, enduring, classic and a bit whimsical. I love the sea connotations through meaning she’s very pretty.

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] ~ I love [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! She’s stubborn, nostalgic, warm and classic. I love the meaning companion along with biblical associations that are very positive. I also like the idea of [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] as a nickname.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ~ ahhh gosh I’ve been crushing so hard on [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] she’s just adorable. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] makes me smile she’s warm, clunky cool, has autumnal feels along with the adorable meaning blessed peacemaking. I also love the nickname potential of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] + [name_f]Freddie[/name_f] they are so sweet. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] makes me smile so much.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] ~ she’s bright, sweet, joyous and has the lovely meaning radiant. I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a popular choice that people associate past friends (not that the character is a bad association) so I wouldn’t overthink this connotation. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is very sweet.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - it makes me think of dagnnabit or just like a scream of frustration, sorry

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - I love this! i think it’s super retro and cool, i especially love all the nickname options

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - it’s fine, i don’t feel strongly either way it just seems like a more common then other choices

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - another i don’t feel strongly about either way, it’s pretty but i prefer [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] or [name_f]Maven[/name_f]

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - love her! sweet classic and understated

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - one of my favorite names so love it, gives me an outdoorsy / feisty vibe a bit rough and tumble tomboyish

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - i don’t think of Friends when I see [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], I actually think of the [name_m]Magic[/name_m] School Bus. I think it only matters if you don’t like the Friends association. I do know a little 2 year old named this (after Monster Squad is what i’m told) and she is super articulate and has the biggest vocabulary of any 2 year old i know, very sweet and smart little girl

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - I adore [name_f]Dagny[/name_f] but she got ripped to shreds by my family (“Dagny like dagger? Why would you give your daughter such a violent name?” from what I recall), so I worry how she’d be accepted in the real world. Because of this I think I’d only ever use her as a middle.

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - want to love it, and it’s more interesting than [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], but I still don’t think I love it enough to use it myself.

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - very familiar, but still pretty! I like [name_f]Georgie[/name_f], [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], and just [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] pretty equally. I do prefer [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] to just [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], though!

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - like it a lot! I love a lot of 5 letter [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- names though… and prefer [name_f]Maris[/name_f] and even [name_f]Mared[/name_f] to [name_f]Maren[/name_f]. [name_f]Maren[/name_f] is gorgeous though.

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - I have a soft spot for her since it was my nana’s name. I would only use it as a middle though. But [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is sweet! I adore [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f].

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is appealing, but I would realistically use [name_f]Winter[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] if I wanted [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f].

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - sweet and youthful sound, but FRIENDS is the reason I wouldn’t use it. Probably the only one from my generation, but I didn’t like the show and I get tired of hearing people bring up the show around the name. She does have a lot of nice associations and a pretty meaning, though.

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f], [name_f]Maren[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] are my favorites! Good luck!

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - I totally see the appeal and I think it’s a very refreshing name with lovely Scandinavian heritage. However, I’m Australian and I do see “dag” front and centre - dag is a slang word for someone a bit unfashionable or dowdy. It’s not bad, but it would be enough to make me not use the name.

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - I like this a lot, mainly thanks to the Australian poet [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] Mackellar. I also like the potential for nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f], which is one of my favourite names.

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - this is a favourite of mine. I like the geographical associations (the US state and the country) and the smart, polished sound and feel.

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - not one I’d use personally, but I can see the appeal. It’s tailored but still feminine, a bit unusual but with familiar sounds.

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - in theory I should like this, but the sound is a bit harsh to me. [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] would be quite adorable on a little girl, though.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - I feel like I should like this more, but I just see [name_m]Fred[/name_m] there … which feels like it should be a boys’ name, like [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is a very cute nickname, however.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - I was a teenager when Friends first started, and it was everywhere. It was such a huge phenomenon! But I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is established enough as a name to overcome the association with the show - and, anyway, the character of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] was sweet and fun, and her name has a great history and style (it’s another favourite of mine).

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - seconding @Chococat 's response for this one - I’m also Australian and unfortunately all I can see is that ‘dag/daggy’ reference at the front

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - It’s cute and [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a sweet nickname

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - probably my favourite name on the list + Georgie/Gigi are sweet nicknames

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - not my style personally but it’s a nice name

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - again, not my style - I like the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but I’d personally use another name like [name_m]Winslow[/name_m] or [name_f]Winter[/name_f] to get the nickname

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - Friends is probably my biggest association but I also grew up with a couple of Phoebes so it wouldn’t be my first thought when meeting someone with the name

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here are my thoughts-

Dagny-I don’t care for it. It’s kind of hard to say & reminds me of the phrase ‘dagnabitt’.

Dorothea-So gorgeous! It’s smart & old fashioned & romantic. It’s not too difficult, but fairly unique. I don’t like [name_f]Dori[/name_f] at all, & only kind of like [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. That would be my personal pause for using this name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] is lovely; I just don’t know if an occasional [name_f]Dori[/name_f] is avoidable or not. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is cute though. And I love the stretch nn of [name_f]Daisy[/name_f].

Georgia-It’s not bad. I like the vibe of it more than the actual sound. I like the nn of [name_f]Gigi[/name_f].

Maren-Very nice. Smart & sleek & feminine but a little sporty. [name_m]Easy[/name_m] to say & spell, but not popular.

Ruth-This is nice. Short & simple & classic. And the built in nn of [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is adorable.

Winifred-I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but find [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] a bit heavy. I can’t get into it. I like just [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] best.

Phoebe-Super cute & bright & charming. I wouldn’t worry about the Friends thing too much. It regained recognition because of Friends, but I think that it’s been long enough that this is just an established name that people use sometimes. Plus, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a great character, so not the worst thing!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I have a little [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]! We almost didn’t use it because my husband’s parents were also big fans of the show, but I’m so glad we did! They and everyone else love her name and it fits her perfectly! We’re expecting another little girl and I would love to name her [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] but sadly my husband has vetoed it. So I think you have great taste!

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f] are my two favorites. I like the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] as well but all I think of is [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] from Friends.

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] – First time I’m hearing it so I’d have to get used to it but it’s fun! It reminds me of [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] so there is a familiarity

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] – [name_f]Love[/name_f] this name a lot! I’ve had it on my list for a long time now, I think it’s gorgeous!

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – [name_f]My[/name_f] love for this name has grown recently because of a character in a book. It made the name sweeter and now I love it!

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] – Slowly liking this name more, I love the look of it so that definitely helps!

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] – [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] classic, can’t never go wrong with [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]!

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] – [name_f]Love[/name_f] love this name. Same as [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], it has been on my list for a long time now!

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] – Not a huge fan of this one but I see the appeal. I don’t think it’d be a dealbreaker to go with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] if your parents were fans of Friends, I think usually associations to names change quickly (at least for me) so it depends but either way it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad association, I’ve never watched Friends but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t seem like she is a bad character!

[name_f]Dagny[/name_f] - once again seconding @Chococat’s response, all I see is dag. I don’t see the appeal at all in this name - Sorry!

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - It’s fine, not my personal fav but I love [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as a nickname

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite of them, it is so pretty and bubbly! [name_f]Georgie[/name_f] & [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] are so cute!

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] - Not my style but I can see the appeal

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - It’s nice, I love [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] though!

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - Not my style but I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a full or from using [name_m]Winslow[/name_m] or [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]!

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - Friends is my main association, but I don’t think that it is something to worry about at all. I know a few Phoebe’s and no one has ever really mentioned it! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if they did it isn’t a bad show to be associated with!
