Out of interest, are there any popular names on NB that anyone dislikes? I’m not huge on ~dated~ names, such as [name_f]Edie[/name_f]/[name_f]Edith[/name_f], which seems to be very high on a lot of people’s lists.
ooh, i do not like cora. much too harsh sounding for me. i really don’t like old ladyish names either, margaret, evelyn, frances, elaine, vera, ruth, mary, esther, helen et al.
Adventurous/pompous/hyper-masculine boy’s names like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]Blair[/name_u], etc.
Wishy-washy word names like [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Poet[/name_u], and [name_f]Boheme[/name_f].
Names such as [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] make me cringe! Really out there word names like [name_f]Blossom[/name_f], [name_f]Apple[/name_f], [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] and other various flower names (besides the classic [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], lily and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]) also give me the same reaction.
Many of them. I have a completely different style then many people on here. The popular ones I dislike the most are maybe: [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Lark[/name_f], Beatrice, Imogen, [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Grier[/name_f], [name_f]Greer[/name_f], Rosemary, Maeve, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]. NB-popular Boy names I really dislike are like [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Harold[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Frank[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
I don’t really like a lot of the old fusty sounding names that are now coming back into style such as [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. For me to use a fusty name it would have to be a well loved family member’s name and would have to have a more modern nickname to go with it or I would use it in the middle spot.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]!
I want to like it because so many others do but I just can’t see the appeal.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I really try, but I cant see the appeal…
Well, I will probably dislike popular NB names because they’re popular not because I find the name horrible. There are so many names, I don’t want my child to be in a class with 2 or more children with the same name. For that reason I dislike a name if I found it among the top names like: [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] etc
[name_m]JOSHUA[/name_m]! Please tell me why this name sounds so horrible to me! I want to like it!
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]. I’ve never understood the fascination with [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]. Sounds much too harsh and masculine.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] as well. I want to love it though! I’m trying to!
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]. It just looks like maggot to me. I used to dislike [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] too. I still don’t like them too much, but don’t dislike them as much either.
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (Oh my darling)
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] (Harpy)
Those I dislike the more of all time. I think the popularity of them both has been waning through the years on here…
Boys about the only name I dislike is [name_m]William[/name_m]. Never have liked it. I like [name_u]Billy[/name_u] OK and love [name_m]Liam[/name_m].
Lots of name here not my style, but I like names, so they do not bother me at all.
As a rule I am really ambivalent about gender neutral names. (So I end up with a Granddaughter named [name_u]Rylie[/name_u]! LOL)
Names like [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] and [name_u]Keagan[/name_u] are among the few I loath .
Some I find overused and have lost something [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
Others I just don’t see the appeal
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
I don’t like the animal or weapon name trend for boys.
The boys names for girls names I don’t dislike but it’s like where does it stop? Some like [name_m]Reiley[/name_m]/[name_u]Riley[/name_u] fit both so well but others feel like what is so wrong with girls names? And I know many fully accepted girls names use to be male.
I might think of more later.
I’m not overly keen on unisex names (although there are some exceptions) or masculine names on girls like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. I also tend not to like place names although this can depend on the place: my definite hates are: [name_u]Easton[/name_u], [name_m]Weston[/name_m], [name_u]Bristol[/name_u], [name_u]London[/name_u]. Individual names that I don’t like are [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (any spelling), [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Eloisa[/name_f], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_m]Carl[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_u]Kyle[/name_u], [name_u]Dean[/name_u].
However I think it’s important that we don’t like the same names otherwise there wouldn’t be much variety. I also think we shouldn’t be too harsh on somebody’s choices, it’s ok to say it is not your style but I generally think we should keep our opinions beyond that as names are very individual and are often personal and important to the person who chooses it.
It’s so nice to see that I’m not the only one who dislikes certain names, like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f]/[name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], and all those old lady names. I’ve been seeing them so often that I thought I was going insane!
So I made a list, of course.
Warning: extremely brutal opinions ahead! Avert your eyes if you don’t want to see me bitch about names.
I absolutely loathe…
Boys’ names (or names that sound masculine) on girls, such as:
[name_u]Blakely[/name_u] (sounds like an adverb)
[name_u]Bradley[/name_u] (all boy)
[name_f]Grier[/name_f] (last name/very unpleasant to the ear)
[name_f]Lark[/name_f] (???)
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (all boy)
[name_u]Tatum[/name_u] (come on now)
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - It strikes me as a dirty word. Specifically, like a slang word for a vagina.
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] - Ffs, no. Sounds like [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] and I just feel sorry for any baby who has gotten this name.
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - This sounds like anything but a name to me. It sounds like it could be a fruit (which it is), a cleaner, a seasoning, a cream…
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] - I thought people were joking when I first saw this floating around. I would never want to see a girl (or a boy, for that matter) with this name.
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - Nickname for popcorn? I would be so embarrassed to have this name. I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t get strange looks (at least in the States where I’m from).
I seriously dislike…
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] - I always think mango or maggot, as well. With [name_f]Margaux[/name_f], I literally think [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-Gowx.
Old lady “classic” or just plain names like [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - I’ve never liked this name. There’s nothing attractive about it that I can see.
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] - Slope. It just rubs me the wrong way.
Word or place names - I really don’t like children being named after places or things in general, but some are alright. If they’re really ridiculous names (like [name_f]Evening[/name_f], Locket, [name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u], Wildflower, etc) this gets bumped to the “absolutely loathe” category.
I just don’t like/not my style…
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - Lemonade.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - [name_f]Beat[/name_f] [name_u]Rice[/name_u].
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] - Eating? Beady?
[name_u]Fran[/name_u]- names
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] names that aren’t [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], such as [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].
I can’t stand [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], or any of the [name_u]Fran[/name_u]- names, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and other old lady names.
@lostkid, ha! I was a bit afraid to say [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] because it seems that everyone has it on their list and 60% of the “Names that you go wow” posts for girls are some [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] combination. Why?! She wasn’t a great character and the name sounds the same as all of the paraphilias, ew.
Also [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], I feel that they sound childish and feel pompous.
