Popularity Issue!

The number one boy name in Nc was given to 706 just to give you a point of reference. [name]Hope[/name] that helps a bit

The duck dynasty show was another reason I didn’t want to use the name. The image of the name in my head and the way people may perceive it was changed by that. Didn’t want people to think duck dynasty had a heavy influence on me when I don’t even like the show lol. It’s a popular show around here but in the end if you really love it go for it. That show won’t last forever and I’m sure some people won’t even know its from there. I also think [name]Silas[/name] Marner

Honestly, I just had to look up the show Duck Dynasty that everyone is referring to. I had briefly heard of it, but I had no idea what it was about or who that character was. Doesn’t really sway my feelings too much.

That’s not too bad I guess. [name]Rowan[/name] is in the mid 300’s for girls I believe, and just slightly higher for boys, and I have met quite a few [name]Rowan[/name]'s in my town (mostly boys, one other little girl) but again, that just might be my city and my “peers.” When we venture anywhere else in the country, people say “What? Can you spell that?” and act confused like they’ve never heard it before. I would imagine [name]Silas[/name] would be the same, except more recognizable because of the Bible, etc. :-?

I am feeling pretty discouraged about it currently… it seems like all my favorite boy names are being scooped up by the general public and pushed into the limelight. :frowning:

I don’t think it’s too popular at all, and since Weeds is over, I think the popularity will slip too. I love the name, and I think it’s perfect alongside [name]Rowan[/name]!

When we first named our son ([name]Elijah[/name] [name]Myles[/name]), I knew of a few Elijahs (But I’m a teacher, my husband is a teacher/coach, my aunt is a teacher, my mother is principal…you get the point). At the time, my mother had 1 [name]Elijah[/name] in K5 at her [name]Christian[/name] school of 200 kids. My husband knew of 2 Elijahs in his junior high of around 700 kids. So, I didn’t feel it was TOO popular. Also, it’s classic and biblical.

BUT the moment we started sharing his name, so many people started saying, “Oh! My 2nd cousin just named her baby [name]Eli[/name]!” It bothered me at first. In fact, we nearly changed it. But we decided that we liked it enough that we would use it.

The 2013 list just came out and [name]Elijah[/name] is unlucky number 13. Meh. It’s a bummer. But I can’t imagine my son being anything else than an [name]Elijah[/name]

I think [name]Silas[/name] is going to hit top 50 to top 20 for sure. It seems to be popping up in a lot of tv shows and movies lately. So many people are looking for underused biblical names, and this one is a winner.

[name]Emma[/name] is EVERYWHERE

That’s funny someone brought up Duck Dynasty. I was home (WI) visiting family 2 weeks ago, and my aunt and uncle had me watch that show with them. Apparently it’s the new big reality show among the people living in or around my home town. The culture of the area is REALLY into hunting. Anyway, there’s a cousin named [name]Si[/name], short for [name]Silas[/name], on the show. My first thought was, “Wow, [name]Silas[/name] is going to be the next big name for baby boys around here.”

Anyway, I think it’s a regional thing. Is hunting big in NC? If it is, the show may have an impact on naming trends around you. It’s worth considering.
It will be a well-known name some places and unheard of in other places. I moved from SF a year ago, and it was a relatively popular name there, but for entirely other reasons.

You will be able to wait and see what becomes of the name before you actually have to figure out if you want to name your son that or not, so that is a big plus!!

My son was born [name]May[/name] 2011. and I named him [name]Silas[/name]. and I’ve yet to meet another. and people pronounce his name wrong ALL. THE. TIME. so if it helps any, 2 years later and everyone looks at his name like it’s Jibberish. So It’s not that popular [name]IMO[/name].
