Popularity of names: top 10!

I was thinking this morning after reading some responses to one of my earlier posts about the popularity of names. I started to think about my pupils’ names and then tried to figure out what the most popular names might have been that year for their age group; once I did that I went to try and find the actual lists for [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m] and I was quite surprised.

I teach kids from around 1998 to 2002/3 so I’m only going to do these years. Next to the names I’m going to put the number of pupils that I personally teach who have these names - my classes range from about 28 to 22 pupils.

So in 2003 the top ten for girls were:
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 3 (thankfully they all go by different names: [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u])
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 1

2002 - I have a joint class of kids born in 2002 and 2003 so even though the ranks of the names have changed the number hasn’t.
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 3
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 1

Although, I have no [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]'s in my class I do know of at least two [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]'s in that year group. I equally have some girls with more “unusual” names: [name_f]Ffion[/name_f] and [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f].

2001 (a whole new class and year group)
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - 1

This is one of my trickier classes as both the [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]'s and the [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]'s are friends and sit either next to each of or near each other and constantly have to say “which one?” Drive me up the flipping wall as I don’t want to call them [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] 1 and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] 2 or [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] with her hair up or [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] with the blond hair. The most unusual name in this class is [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] but she goes by [name_f]Jemma[/name_f].

2000 (again new class and new year group)
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - 0

Not really much to say, thankfully they all sit apart from each other in this class (and I’m in a different classroom and the layout is a lot better) so I’m never pointing to one [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and the other thinks it’s her. I can’t really think of a name that seems a little “out of place” in this class, I do however have a boy called [name_u]Storm[/name_u] in that class.

1999:
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 0

[name_f]My[/name_f] only class without multiples of the same name! I do have a girl in this class called [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] which always stood out a bit to me.

1998:
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] - 0
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - 0

Nothing to special to say here. However, the is a girl in this class called [name_f]Priya[/name_f] which I think is just downright beautiful!

Obviously, there are a lot more pupils in the school and this numbers might only be a small part of that particular year groups pool of names. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though there were no [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]'s from 1999 in my class that doesn’t mean that there won’t be any [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]'s at all in that year group!

This was hell of a task that I set myself! Hopefully, some people will find it interesting!

Thanks for sharing, I found it quite actually to see the most popular names from your perspective. I sometimes forget that although a name may seem rather popular on nameberry and in the newspapers, this doesn’t necessarily mean you will know a lot of children with those names in real life. Your post has prompted me to do the same thing with the top ten here in Australia.

  1. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - 2 (including one dog)
  2. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 1
  3. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 5 (though I feel as though I’m forgetting some. One of them spells is Emmily and I am fairly sure here first name is actually Emmily Ros3, but she just goes by Emmily.)
  4. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 1
  5. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 2
  6. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - 1
  7. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] - 2
  8. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 2
  9. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - 1
  10. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - 2

and I’ve decided to add the boys…

  1. William - 4
  2. Lucas - 1
  3. Oliver - 1
  4. Noah - 0
  5. Jack - 2
  6. Ethan - 1
  7. Lachlan - 2
  8. Thomas - 2
  9. Joshua - 5 (though I feel as though I’m forgetting one or two)
  10. James - 3

It’s very interesting to see other countries most popular names, I think it’s important to sometimes take a step back when choosing names and think about how many people you know with this name.

This is the top 10 from 2013 and the numbers represent people I know with the names (excluding my pupils).
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] 1
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] 2
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] 0
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] 1
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] 0
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] 0 (although I know a [name_f]Isabel[/name_f])
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] 2 (both are old ladies)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] 1
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] 5 (four are adults)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] 2

To be honest, I’m not round young children very much. Although, in my area I’ve noticed that there are a lot of [name_f]Evie[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]'s when I’m out shopping.

I don’t work with kids, but I work in a busy store where I hear parents call their little ones’ names all the time. Here’s my attempt with the 2013 Top 10 for [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

  1. [name_f]Emma[/name_f] - have known 2, and I hear it often
  2. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - have known 1 (she’d be 6 or 7 now), hear it often
  3. [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - I know a [name_f]Sofie[/name_f] in her early teens, have an older coworker named [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], and hear variations of it often.
  4. [name_f]Zoe/name_f - I know a [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] in her teens, and I hear the name a lot.
  5. [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Mia[/name_f]/[name_f]Mya[/name_f] -I hate that they grouped these together, [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] are different names. I know one [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and one [name_f]Maya[/name_f], and hear [name_f]Mia[/name_f] more often.
  6. [name_f]Emilie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f] -Immensely popular when I went to school, I’ve probably known 4 or 5. Still hear the name a fair bit.
  7. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]/[name_f]Khloe[/name_f] -I’ve known 1, she’d be a teenager now. Hear it from time to time.
  8. [name_f]Lea[/name_f]/[name_f]Leah[/name_f] - never personally known a [name_f]Leah[/name_f], and I rarely hear it. Maybe it’s just not that common in my area.
  9. [name_f]Sara/name_f - I’ve known countless Sarahs of all ages, but I don’t often hear it on little girls.
  10. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t known one personally but I hear it all the time.

I’m still in school, so I’ll do this with my fellow pupils. Most of them were born around 1999 and 2000, and I’m in the US.

  1. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (2)
  2. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (1)
  3. [name_u]Madison[/name_u] (2)
  4. [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] (0)
  5. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (2)
  6. [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] (0)
  7. [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] (2)
  8. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] (2)
  9. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (2)
  10. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] (0)

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] 5
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] 5
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] 4
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] 10 (I kid you not!)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] 2
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] 2
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] 3
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] 0
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] 9
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] 5

I still am in school, so that explains how I know 10 [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s and 9 [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]'s! Oh and I’m from [name_f]England[/name_f].

I went to a very large school (I’ve now left it) and can’t possibly remember every single girls’ name in my year group. But my mum does work with young children and I happen to know an unusual amount of under 5s!

So in my area the ‘‘in real life’’ count looks like this (using the Top 10 [name_f]England[/name_f]/[name_m]Wales[/name_m] 2012 stats, I believe the 2013 list you’re using [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is from an independent website such as Nameberry rather than official number of babies born, but correct me if I’m wrong)…

  1. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - 1
  2. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 2
  3. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 1 (she’s probably about 7 though)
  4. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 2
  5. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] - 2
  6. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - 0, a couple of Evas
  7. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] - 1
  8. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] - 2
  9. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - 0, but one [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
  10. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - 1

Probably about expected, but then I know children with almost every name in the top 100, so just a couple of repeats in the top 10 can’t be a big deal?

Lots of zeros on your lists- goes to show that popular names aren’t completely horrific. I volunteer with young kids and have yet to come across most of the top names. I don’t know of any who’ve shared first names either, though there’s currently a young girl with the same name as me

As for the most recent E&W list, I know of…

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (0); [name_m]Harry[/name_m] (1)
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (0); [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] (2)
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] (4); [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (3)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] (3); [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] (0)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] (1); [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] (1)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] (0); [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] (3)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] (1); [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] (0)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] (0); [name_u]Riley[/name_u] (0)
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (3); [name_m]William[/name_m] (1)
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (0); [name_u]James[/name_u] (1)

^ Most of those are people I went to school with, back when the popular names were more popular than they are now.

Btw, I noticed you seem to take your recent English name data from babycentre, which isn’t all that accurate tbh. The official lists are here if you want them

I’ll do the girls from 1996 (my birth year) who went to my school in the UK. I’ve had to use the US top as I can’t find the UK top!

  1. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - 1
  2. [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] - 1 (she spells it [name_f]Ashleigh[/name_f] though)
  3. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 1
  4. [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] - 0
  5. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] - 0 (I knew a [name_f]Sara[/name_f] though, but it was pronounced SAR-[name_m]RA[/name_m] instead of SAIR-[name_m]RA[/name_m])
  6. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] - 1
  7. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - 2
  8. [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] - 1
  9. [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] - 0
  10. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] -0

Interesting…

I don’t know many people with the top 10 names of 2013 of my country (The Netherlands) which is probably because I live in a rather rural and secluded area, where trends are always a bit late to catch on. However I used a list from 1996 (my year of birth) and turns out I know quite a lot of [name_f]Sanne[/name_f]'s and Irises…

  1. [name_f]Laura[/name_f] - 2
  2. [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] - 3
  3. [name_f]Sanne[/name_f] - 7
  4. [name_f]Anne[/name_f] -2
  5. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] - 11
  6. [name_f]Demi[/name_f] - 1
  7. [name_f]Maria[/name_f] - 2
  8. [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] - 1
  9. [name_u]Kim[/name_u] - 3
  10. [name_u]Romy[/name_u] - 1

:] I love seeing your comments on popularity! I agree completely.

I am no longer in school, and I’m not a teacher or anything, but people I know with the top 10 names here:

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - 1 (although, she doesn’t even live in the US. Does it count, even?)
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - that I know personally? One (unless you’re counting Nameberry’s @oliviasarah, and then it would be two!), although I’ve met about 4 little Olivias.
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - 2 (I think)
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] - 1
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - at least 4, but maybe more?

It’s not like there’s 5 [name_f]Mia[/name_f]'s in a class, or anything, though.

I’m still in school and I’m only doing people in my grade

  8. [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]- 1
  9. [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]- 1

  1. [name_f]Emma[/name_f] - 1
  2. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 3

  10. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - 0

Only [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]'s are really popular in my world apparently, but thats because I was born in 89 when they were top names

I’m 15, the kids in my grade are 1998-1999. I’m gonna see how many I know

Girls, 1998:

  1. [name_f]Emily[/name_f]- at least 2 in my grade

  7. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]- 3 or 4
  8. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]- 2
  9. [name_u]Madison[/name_u]- 3
  10. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- too many to count. They all go by something different, lol

  6. [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]- 2
  7. [name_u]Madison[/name_u]- 3
  8. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]- 3 or 4
  9. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]- 2

  1. [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]- too many, in my opinion

  9. [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]- 1

Personally, I think the US top ten is rather boring

I definitely agree with you! I also find it very interesting to see other country’s top names. I also like to look at birth announcements. Something I’ve found here in Australia, is that parents are choosing names more similar to those chosen in the UK. However, going back 3+ years, Australian birth announcements looked more similar to those seen in the US.

I finished school last year, but I’ve decided to see how many people had top names in my year. Most of them were born in 1995, but there were a few 1994’s and 1996’s, so I’ll do them all…I know this is the girl names forum, but I’m too interested to leave the boys out.

1994:

  1. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] (2) / [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (1)
  2. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (2) / [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] (3)
  3. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (1) / [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] (3)
  4. [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] (0) / [name_u]James[/name_u] (0)
  5. [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] (0) / [name_u]Michael[/name_u] (1)

I think this post (compared to my previous post), shows how over the years, parents are choosing less popular names and also that parents tend to be more adventurous with girls names than with boys.

In [name_m]Wellington[/name_m], NZ there seem loads of kids called [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]/[name_m]Frank[/name_m] or [name_f]Frances[/name_f] even though it isn’t in the top 100 at all. Also quite a few [name_f]Vita[/name_f]'s. Otherwise the familiar Mias, Isabellas, Sophias and Amelias. Lots of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s and Noahs as well.

I just quickly went through with the year I as born and people I graduated high school (4 years ago) with. Off the top of my head I counted 45 names that were in the top 10 (for both girls and boys). Adding in the 3 names that were in the top 10 the year before I was born (when approximately half of my class was born) but not in the top 10 the year I was born the total was at 53. I graduated with at most 120. Of course, I counted countless others that were either in grades above or below mine or that I met in college, but there was no easy way to factor them in.

There isn’t a top 10 list for Singapore but based on the people I know: (I’m 16, by the way and these are the most common names I’ve heard while in my current school)

Actually had to search the school system for this xD Not entirely accurate as some people don’t have their first names in front. I only typed in the names I hear most.

[name_f]Rachel[/name_f]: 22
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]: 5
