So I have been looking at some of the names and the difference in popularity around the world. For example I love the name [name]Harry[/name] but I’m not sure if I would use it as last year is was in the top 50 here (Australia) but nameberry tells me that it’s #709 in the US.
Then there are names that make it in our top 10 like [name]Sophie[/name] or [name]Hunter[/name] that don’t make it into the top 50 on nameberry. [name]Oliver[/name] was the top boys name here last year but was #78 in the US. [name]Lachlan[/name] held the #4 spot here and has been in the top consistently for a number of years but it’s almost unheard of in some countries.
[name]Charlie[/name] (as a girls name) tied for #20 with [name]Hannah[/name] here but [name]Charlie[/name] is #376 in the US. In contrast [name]Elizabeth[/name] was #11 in the US last year but doesn’t make the top 200 in Australia. The year we named our daughter [name]Elizabeth[/name] there were only 16 other [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s born in out of the 65000 babies born in our state.
Are there names that are very popular where you live but not in other places in the world? Or names that are popular here on nameberry but unheard of where you live?
Interesting stuff. I think [name]Harry[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] are both going to be on the rise in the US in coming years.
I would love to see a map of regions for [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name]…it seems like they’re both crazy popular but in different parts of the world.
I’m currently in the US, but in my state, there are a few that are way more popular than in the overall. [name]Gianna[/name] at #10 always surprises me and [name]Mila[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Elena[/name], and [name]Aria[/name] have all broken the top 100.
My husbands family is in Poland, popular names there that are much less common in the US…
[name]Lena[/name] is #1. [name]Martyna[/name]/[name]Martina[/name] and Weronika/[name]Veronica[/name] are also high up on the list. (I feel like every other little girl I meet is a [name]Martina[/name]! And it’s not even in the top 1000 in the US). Versions of [name]Simon[/name] ([name]Szymon[/name]), [name]Philip[/name], and [name]Caspar[/name] are in the top 10. As is [name]Bartosz[/name] (Closest approx would be [name]Bartholomew[/name])
lol, MOST of the names on Nameberry are unheard of where I am! Most people use the trendy (or classic-ish without being truly classic, like [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Anna[/name], etc.) top 100 names where I’m from (like [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Robert[/name], [name]Arianna[/name], [name]Layla[/name], [name]Destiny[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Ella[/name], etc.). I know two girls named [name]Eliora[/name] and [name]Elora[/name], and I know a baby boy named [name]Theodore[/name], and that’s about as Nameberryish as it gets around here, lol!
The HUGE names in my area are [name]Elijah[/name] (I know/have met at least 25–and a former teacher of mine will have an [name]Elijah[/name] in the next coming months, which makes it at least 26!), [name]Autumn[/name] (I know around 12), [name]Cora[/name] (I know at least six, with various spellings), and [name]Francisco[/name]/[name]Francesca[/name] (putting together the feminine and masculine forms, I’ve met six in the past year. YEAR!!).
Popular names where I live are [name]Genesis[/name], [name]Madison[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], and [name]Camila[/name].
Nameberry type names are not heard of a lot. I actually don’t mention the Nameberry names anymore because I have been laughed at for the names I like. It is kind of funny.
It also varies by state here in the USA, where I currently reside, the most popular given names are things like [name]Brooklyn[/name], [name]Addison[/name], [name]Alexis[/name], [name]Nevaeh[/name], [name]Lily[/name], Adallyn, [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Brayden[/name], [name]Gavin[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Logan[/name], [name]Mason[/name], etc…
So with the style of names I like, I think my kid might end up being the only one in her class if I continue to live in this part of the nation.
I’m in the UK and the names that appear to be popular in my area are [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Alfie[/name], [name]Archie[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Amelia[/name] & [name]Ava[/name].
I know of 4 people considering the name [name]Lola[/name], so I can see that one rising pretty quickly.
Looking at stats alone, [name]Camila[/name], [name]Valentina[/name], [name]Melanie[/name], and [name]Daisy[/name] are considerably more popular where I am now. An interesting contrast to when I lived in [name]Nevada[/name], where Hispanic and S names ([name]Sierra[/name] and [name]Sienna[/name], to name a few) were big.
For boys, Hispanic names are more popular (not unlike [name]Nevada[/name]) overall. On a side note, I think it interesting that [name]Andres[/name] makes the top 100 here.
I am also Australian and I know so many [name]Lachlan[/name]'s it annoys me. Also my own name [name]Ebony[/name] was top 100 (and still is top 50 in Tasmania) but never got higher then the 900’s in the US. I have always found that very strange as it sounds similar to [name]Emily[/name] and gets confused for [name]Emily[/name] and [name]Emma[/name] a lot.
