Popularity put me off

I just have a few questions about popularity and meaning of names that I would like to ask you berries!

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name?
Would you use a top ten popular name?
Have you ever loved a name and then looked up the popularity and then been put completely off the name?
If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose?
What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use?
What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesey or nice?
[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often?

You don’t have to answer all the questions but it would help.

Thanks in advance.

PS - Sorry if there are any grammar or spelling mistakes I’m a rubbish proof reader.

Anyone? …

I personally wouldn’t use a popular or trendy name. It’s important to my husband and I to give our child his/her own name so they feel more special. Name popularity tends to cause people to segrigate children as well. (teachers/coaches/ etc.) I really like the name [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] and the meaning of each. I don’t see [name]Felix[/name] becoming too popular and the meanings of the names certainly isn’t cheesey.

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name? In theory. I grew up with a Top 10 name and found it really aggravating. To make matters worse, my surname is fairly common. I often run across people with my first and last name combo.

Would you use a top ten popular name? Despite my issues, I love the names [name]William[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name]. Would I use one of them? Maybe. I hesitate, because of my own experiences, but I can’t say I’ve absolutely ruled them out.

If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose? I’d go with the name I really like.

What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use? In theory, I’d like to stay out of the Top 100. In theory.

What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesy or nice? I don’t think it’s an issue. Most people who meet the child will likely take the name at face value and not worry about the similarity of the meanings.

[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often? A bit of both, really. My favorite name for a boy is [name]Elliot[/name], and it’s in the sweet spot of popularity as far as I’m concerned. It’s recognizable, but not too popular. On the other hand, if it suddenly became a Top 10 name, I’d still use it in a heartbeat.

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name? No, not really.

Would you use a top ten popular name? Yes, our top two boys’ names are [name]William[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name], both in the top 10, and [name]Elizabeth[/name], our second choice for a girl, is just outside at #11.

Have you ever loved a name and then looked up the popularity and then been put completely off the name? No.

If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose? The name I really like.

What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use? We don’t have a limit, but I do have to admit that I did veto my husband’s favorite [name]Jacob[/name], though I do rather like it. [name]Even[/name] though I don’t really care about popularity, [name]Jacob[/name] has been #1 for so long that it just seemed boring. (Plus, he vetoed my top pick [name]Nicholas[/name], so I admit I was getting back at him a little by vetoing his top pick…but don’t tell him that.)

What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesey or nice? A little cheesy, but not the worst thing in the world.

[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often? [name]Both[/name]. I like what I like!

I don’t like popular names at all, though classic names, going back centuries, are OK. Named my kids very unique names…

I do not like popular names for my own children. None of my kids have names in the top 1000. I prefer to select extremely unique, meaningful names that noone else will likely have. None of my children’s’ names are even in the Nameberry Database and they are not yookik!

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name?: I don’t worry about it but I - generally - avoid anything above more popular than the top fifty.
Would you use a top ten popular name?: Only in an unavoidable situation, such as using a family name.
Have you ever loved a name and then looked up the popularity and then been put completely off the name?: Yes, [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Holly[/name].
If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose?: A name I like. Meanings don’t concern me.
What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use?: Fifty or above. Anything in the top one hundred makes me twitchy though, lol.
What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesy or nice?: Unless you know that the two names mean the same thing - which the average person won’t - it’ll never come under scrutiny.
[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often?: Uncommon and foreign names are my thing. Never surnames, made up or place names.

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name? Eh. A bit. I don’t really have to; I would still dislike most current popular names even if they weren’t popular.
Would you use a top ten popular name? Probably not.
Have you ever loved a name and then looked up the popularity and then been put completely off the name? Nope, not that I can remember.
If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose? The name I really liked. But I’d use the other one in the middle spot if it sounded good.
What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use? I guess the top 200 or 300. But it’s hardly a concern of mine.
What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesey or nice? I’m pretty neutral about it. I guess it’s nice.
[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often? Definitely the latter.

Popularity is not a factor I consider when looking at names. Meaning is very important to me though, and it does bother me to see a first/middle combo with a redundant or contradictory meaning. I don’t know that I could choose between a name I love and a name with significant meaning to me; generally all of my favorites fall under both categories.

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name?
Not exactly. My main concern is the exposure of a name, if I’ll hear a name too much too often on too many people, then I’ll get tired of the name.
I get overexposed, but for example, I know the name [name]Olivia[/name] is popular, but I’ve only encountered three in my lifetime so to me that’s not overexposed for me. Same with [name]Alexander[/name], I’ve only met two or three.

Would you use a top ten popular name?
Yes, I would. [name]Olivia[/name]'s my number three name, and it’s number 4 on the SSA. (I live in [name]Canada[/name] though, I think it’s a bit higher here.) [name]Emma[/name] is also on my long list, and [name]Ethan[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] I’m very fond of.

Have you ever loved a name and then looked up the popularity and then been put completely off the name?
Nope, never.

If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose?
Depends, does the name I really like have a bad meaning? Or is just neutral? For example, if it’s between [name]Cameron[/name] which I love but means crooked nose, or [name]Matthew[/name] which I like less but has a great meaning (Gift of God), I’d choose [name]Matthew[/name].
Meanings are huge for me, I firmly believe that what the name means is what you’re calling your child every time you say it. And I would not want to call my child “Crooked nose”, no matter how lovely it sounded.

What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use?
I don’t consider any number too high. If I love the name, I’m using it regardless of list standing.

What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesey or nice?
I think it’s redundant, but can work fine. I wouldn’t really be bothered by a [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name], but a [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] would drive me mad.

[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often?
I tend to like popular names, but moreso names that are familiar, but not in the top 10/20.

[name]Hope[/name] this helped!

I absolutely worry about popularity. I have a made up name and i grew up in a very small town. Yet out of the 38 people I graduated (yup, 38) with 5 of them were amanda. I know what it is to not find your name on a cup like everyone else but also one of my BFF’s still goes by her last name because being amanda was tight quarters in our class.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name] and [name]Ella[/name]. have since i was a kid. [name]Evelyn[/name] was my Great grandma and I have a long love of [name]Ella[/name] [name]Fitzgerald[/name]. When i growing up they were still considered old lady names. Fast forward 15 years and there are little Evelyns and Ellas everywhere. it does take the shine off it for me. I dropped them off my list.

Obviously popularity doesn’t bother me. I prefer to look at a name for its meaning and history than looking at a name to only see how popular it is. A trendy name puts me off but a popular one doesn’t. If there was a name I loved enough, yes, I would use a top 10 name. My son’s name was #71 the year he was born and has risen 14 spots since then and it doesn’t bother me, my daughter’s name was #57 the year before she was born (2012 rankings aren’t out yet) and it seems to be losing popularity but even if it wasn’t, I wouldn’t care. This isn’t to say I would never use a name not in the top 1000. [name]One[/name] of my favorite girls names is [name]Cordelia[/name] and would’ve used it for my daughter had I had SO’s approval (it’s off the table now due to ending in the same sound as [name]Julia[/name]).

I don’t worry about the popularity of a name. If I love the name, I’ll use it. Popular or not.
I would. I like [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], and [name]Noah[/name].
I’ve been surprised by the popularity but haven’t been put off.
It depends on the meaning of the name I love. I would want a name I loved rather than liked.
I don’t have one. Like I said, if I love it, I love it.
I don’t consider it cheesy. [name]Happy[/name] and fortunate are different enough for me to use.
I like meanings of names the best.

[name]Do[/name] you worry about the popularity of a name? Sort of, [name]Kinda[/name], not really. What I mean with this is that if a name is in the top 10 I might see if I like something else better or consider a related name. I used to love [name]Aurora[/name] but when it started becoming more popular I looked for an alternative and found [name]Aurelia[/name] which I love even more. It’s less difficult to say and just feels classier. My point is, that yes I was influenced by [name]Aurora[/name]'s rise in popularity but it lead me to find something I loved more. However, if I really love the name I don’t think its popularity would dissuade me.

Would you use a top ten popular name? See above.

If you were choosing between a name that you really like, and a name you like a little but love the meaning, which would you choose? I don’t know. I think I’d try to find a name that has both qualities. Most of my favorites do.

What number of popularity do you consider to be too high to use? In theory, I’d like to stay out of the Top 500. In theory. However, [name]Felix[/name] has been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl and it’s now at 311 (as of 2011) and the fact that it’s well above the 500 mark would never stop me from using it (the fact that my cousin already has two nephews with the name and I had a doll with that name however, might. ([name]Don[/name]'t want my kid to think I named him after a doll.)

What do you think of repeating meanings? For example, [name]Felix[/name] [name]Asher[/name] both mean happy or fortunate? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s cheesy or nice? I would definitely find a different middle name with a different meaning. Meaning is important to me and telling a story with the meaning you choose, so using two names with similar meaning feels like a wasted opportunity.

[name]Do[/name] you like popular names or do you tend to go for names that are not used often? It’s a bit of both, though the names that are becoming more popular that are on my list have been on my list since I was a kid and first started liking names. I’m not sure I would use them now with other options. My favorites sort of rotate off of my top 10 list on a regular basis so who knows where I might land once I’m actually naming a tinny human being.
