Possible Girl Names

[name]Hi[/name] all,

We are due in [name]July[/name] and as of now, don’t know the gender so we have both boys and girls lists going. Boys names will probably be [name]Conan[/name]. As for girls, I really like strong classics and vintage names. Think [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]…

[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] “[name]Hattie[/name]”
[name]Henrietta[/name] “[name]Hetty[/name]”
[name]Roberta[/name]
[name]Philippa[/name] “[name]Pippa[/name]” - I’m wondering if I should just use [name]Pippa[/name]?
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name] “[name]Ada[/name], [name]Addie[/name]”
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tillie[/name]/[name]Tilda[/name]”
[name]Alice[/name]

[name]Long[/name] list I know, but we’re just starting out. What should stay and what should go?

Great list!!

[name]Caroline[/name] - like
[name]Julia[/name] - like, but it’s dated
[name]Harriet[/name] “[name]Hattie[/name]” - adore
[name]Henrietta[/name] “[name]Hetty[/name]” - adore, adore, adore
[name]Roberta[/name] - nms
[name]Philippa[/name] “[name]Pippa[/name]” - I’m wondering if I should just use [name]Pippa[/name]? - eh, I prefer [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name] - lovely
[name]Daisy[/name] - fantastic!
[name]Virginia[/name] - nms
[name]Adelaide[/name] “[name]Ada[/name], [name]Addie[/name]” - lovely
[name]Annabel[/name] - lovely
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tillie[/name]/[name]Tilda[/name]” - doesnt do it for me
[name]Alice[/name] - can’t go wrong with [name]Alice[/name].

Wow - some great ones:

[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Henrietta[/name] [name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Alice[/name] [name]Virginia[/name]

I love your list, but I’ll start with “what should go” in my opinion–the ones I care for least and the reasons why:

[name]Alice[/name]: Compared to the eye-catching options on your list, I feel like this one just fails to draw attention to itself. I envision a girl named [name]Alice[/name] just blending into the wall. The name is unremarkable, meaning that there is really nothing noteworthy about it either positively or negatively.

[name]Philippa[/name]/[name]Pippa[/name]: Cute in theory, but it was in the news so much around the time of [name]Prince[/name] [name]William[/name]'s wedding as the name of [name]Kate[/name]'s sister that it would feel like it was stolen off a celebrity. There is nothing wrong with using a celebrity’s name, but to me it feels unoriginal, like the parents weren’t creative enough to come up with a cool idea on their own (which, evidenced by the rest of your list, is not the case for you guys, so I think you should use one of your other cool ideas).

[name]Adelaide[/name]: I feel like she would get lost in the sea of Addisons, Addies, and Maddies.

Those are the names on your list that I dislike, but here are my favorites:

[name]Julia[/name]: I know this has remained steadily popular, but it has a very '80s and '90s feel to me, which I adore. It has a sense of nostalgia for me, and reminds me of the awesome decades of my childhood. Beanie Babies, Nickelodeon, Cabbage Patch Dolls…[name]Julia[/name] feels like a throwback to a good time.

[name]Roberta[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] this! It’s one of those names that I would never consider myself but would love to see on someone else’s child. It feels unique and fresh, and would look SO sweet on a child. If you called her [name]Bobbi[/name] for short, I would love it a million times more!

[name]Daisy[/name]: Sounds bright, sunny, and happy.

[name]Virginia[/name]: Makes me think of Christmastime (because of the story behind “Yes, [name]Virginia[/name], there is a [name]Santa[/name] [name]Claus[/name]”). Also, I honeymooned in [name]Virginia[/name] so there is a special place in my heart for the word. (A friend of mine calls the state of [name]Virginia[/name] “the Promised [name]Land[/name],” and it really does have perfect weather and is beautiful all around.) I have nothing but wonderful associations with the name [name]Virginia[/name]. It is on my list as well, with the nickname [name]Ginny[/name].

Keep:
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Philippa[/name] – Though the nn [name]Pippa[/name] is way too trendy
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Alice[/name] – Though if you’re looking to really cut down your list, get rid of this one, as it’s so popular and trendy right now.

Get rid of:
[name]Harriet[/name] – Very strong classic option, but I don’t think it’s ready for its comeback. A baby [name]Harriet[/name] (and nn [name]Hattie[/name]) would face a lot of teasing
[name]Henrietta[/name] – See [name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name] – [name]Way[/name] to masculine. I know its classic but it kind of fits with all the trendy feminization names of right now and MIGHT come off that way.
[name]Annabel[/name] – [name]Bel[/name] names always strike me as very stereotypically southern

I like your list.
Most should stay, I think. I just want to eliminate [name]Roberta[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Henrietta[/name], and probably [name]Daisy[/name].

Can I add? I want to suggest [name]Lydia[/name]. I think it works really well with [name]Conan[/name].

I love your list! So many great names

The ones I would keep…
[name]Philippa[/name] nn [name]Pippa[/name]- I love the name [name]Philippa[/name] and I think [name]Pippa[/name] is cute as long as you’ve got [name]Philippa[/name] to back it up
[name]Henrietta[/name]- Absolutely love! In my opinion it’s a great combination of vintage frilly, yet also classic and studious. My favorite on you list!
[name]Adelaide[/name]- love [name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name]- Classic and familiar, yet underused in my opinion
[name]Matilda[/name]- cute in a quirky kind of way, definitely prefer the nn [name]Tilly[/name]

Names I would drop…
[name]Roberta[/name]- just nms, I think it’s the ‘[name]Bert[/name]’ sound that throws me
[name]Daisy[/name]- love its literature background in The Great [name]Gatsby[/name] but it’s too cutesy for my taste
[name]Phoebe[/name]- just never been a fan if this one, though there’s really nothing wrong with it
[name]Virginia[/name]- Doesn’t have the same pizazz as your other names
[name]Julia[/name]- I’ve known too many [name]Julia[/name]/[name]Julie[/name]/[name]Julianne[/name]/julien’s that this names just lost some of it’s charm

The others ([name]Caroline[/name]/[name]Alice[/name]/[name]Harriet[/name] etc.) I think are great names but don’t have quite the same charm

[name]Caroline[/name] - pretty, classic, historically relevant. KEEP
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] “[name]Hattie[/name]” - NMS
[name]Henrietta[/name] “[name]Hetty[/name]”- NMS
[name]Roberta[/name] - NMS
[name]Philippa[/name] “[name]Pippa[/name]” - I’m wondering if I should just use [name]Pippa[/name]? Gorgeous. Dignified, classic, has history and substance.
I really liked [name]Pippa[/name] too, so I think you may want to know that it is a vulgar slangy term in Swedish. Check out Behind the Name.
[name]Phoebe[/name] - classic, pretty, smart, great history. KEEP.
[name]Daisy[/name] - very cute, and thus better suited to a child than adult. Use a full name - [name]Margaret[/name] or [name]Marguerite[/name] maybe? - with nn [name]Daisy[/name].
[name]Virginia[/name] - NMS.
[name]Adelaide[/name] “[name]Ada[/name], [name]Addie[/name]” - Pretty!
[name]Annabel[/name] - very nice
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tillie[/name]/[name]Tilda[/name]” - very nice
[name]Alice[/name] - I adore it, for the same reasons I adored [name]Caroline[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name].

So in a nutshell, the short list would be:
[name]Alice[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name] with the right full name; [name]Philippa[/name] with caution.
The long list would also include:
[name]Annabel[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Julia[/name], [name]Matilda[/name]
Drop:
[name]Harriet[/name], [name]Henrietta[/name], [name]Roberta[/name], [name]Virginia[/name]

[name]Caroline[/name]-Keep maybe as a middle.
[name]Julia[/name]-Beautiful
[name]Harriet[/name] “[name]Hattie[/name]”-Yes!
[name]Henrietta[/name] “[name]Hetty[/name]” -M favourite on your list. Use it! Please!
[name]Roberta[/name]-Nah
[name]Philippa[/name] “[name]Pippa[/name]” - I’m wondering if I should just use [name]Pippa[/name]?-Use [name]Phillipa[/name] with nn [name]Pippa[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]-Nah.
[name]Daisy[/name]-Nah
[name]Virginia[/name]-Nah
[name]Adelaide[/name] “[name]Ada[/name], [name]Addie[/name]”-Its OK. Would be better with the nickname [name]Heidi[/name] or as a middle.
[name]Annabel[/name]-OK
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tillie[/name]/[name]Tilda[/name]”-I really like it but its getting popular now. I don’t know if that matters to you.
[name]Alice[/name]-Same as [name]Matilda[/name].

Some of my fave [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] names that could go very well with your names:

[name]Elizabeth[/name]/[name]Elisabeth[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Darcy[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name]
