Postpartum Thread 2021!

Hey all!

Sorry I’m just now checking in. Been a little bit of a whirlwind the last two months! Lots of appointments with lots of different specialists for Miss [name_u]Delainey[/name_u]. She’s doing really well, for the most part but was born with her lip, tongue, and both cheeks tied, which has created a lot of issues breastfeeding and she’s not very efficient with the bottle, but is thankfully still gaining appropriately and is a chunker. lol So different from her sister. She’s had the ties revised, but we’re still working to help her figure out how to use her tongue properly. So I’m pumping and she’s mostly bottle fed even though I was really hoping to be able to nurse since I couldn’t with our first daughter. It’s been stressful and disappointing, but we’re still holding out a bit of hope that things will work out and we’ll get her nursing exclusively.

[name_u]Adley[/name_u] is absolutely obsessed with [name_u]Delainey[/name_u], which is really sweet most of the time. lol She’s a bit aggressive with her love sometimes, but she’s only 3, so that’s partly due to her age. We’re just glad she likes her sister. xD

Aww! I love [name_u]Adley[/name_u] and [name_u]Delainey[/name_u] as sister names!

We had to have Callie’s tongue tie released as well. And have been going to see a specialist for her hip dysplasia since she was 1 week old. So I feel you on all the appts! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] [name_u]Delainey[/name_u] is gaining weight well! That was Callie’s biggest struggle in the first weeks.

Callie’s hips are now back in normal position, so she just has to wear her harness overnight now to avoid losing ground. She’s figured out how to scoot on her back but still hates tummy time.

Any ideas on how to make tummy time more fun?

You can lay down and lay baby on top of you for tummy time. I’ve also laid my daughter down on a nursing pillow and had a toy piano in front of her head. I pushed the buttons and it lit up and played music. Or if you have a colorful mat or something for her to lay on and talk to her about the colors, shapes, etc.

How many months is your daughter?

I have to admit I’ve never tried one of these but I’m intrigued. My youngest loathed tummy time and I wonder if he would have liked it more if I had “splurged” on one of these type of things.

Has anyone gotten the COVID vaccine after giving birth? I [name_u]Will[/name_u] probably get mine next week so I can get both doses in before going back to work mid- [name_u]September[/name_u]. I’m worried about caring for [name_f]Magali[/name_f], who will be a little over two weeks old, and my older two while my husband is at work if I end up with any bad symptoms.

@Alix2016 we have one of those mats. We haven’t tried it for about a week . . . Maybe she will like it now.

@jenni_lynn91 [name_f]Callie[/name_f] will be 4 months old on the 16th. Time really flies! She wasn’t where her ped thought she should be for head control at her 2 month appt, so hoping we’re caught up to where we should be.

I got my COVID shots when [name_f]Callie[/name_f] was 2 months old. I was pretty sick with the first shot – nausea/vomiting for about 24 hours. Luckily hubby was home that day because I was useless. The 2nd shot I just had a sore arm. If you can get it on a [name_m]Friday[/name_m] I would recommend it!

Thanks! I’m trying to figure out if it’s better to get during the day or in the evening. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband gets out at 2:00, but I have no idea when my symptoms would start. I’ve heard most people say about 24 hours later. Unfortunately, my husband works every day except Sundays. I’m going to see if I can have my dad come for the morning/afternoon the day after if I need him.

Some people have nothing more than a sore arm for both shots so fingers crossed you’re one of them! I got my shot in the early afternoon and woke up in the early morning hours feeling bad, so it was was somewhere around 12 hours for me to show symptoms. I’m glad your dad will be available to help out if you need a hand!

It’s also not a total disaster if you cut back on tummy time. [name_f]My[/name_f] first loathed it, so I didn’t do it very often, and he’s fine. I had him upright much of the time, in a carrier, and switched him to different positions different times, so he developed the strength he needed. One of my friends with multiple kids says the same.

Thank you!

I believe they also say that a trick for getting in tummy time could be to have her lay across you. If you are able to lie down (at an angle even) and lay her in you then that still “counts.”

I got my first shot when [name_u]Holly[/name_u] was about 2 weeks old. I was pretty lucky as the only symptoms I had were a sore arm and feeling a little tired. But even had I gotten symptoms I work with kids and wanted to make sure I was vaccinated before I had to return to work,

I’m in the same boat, [name_u]Holly[/name_u] either screams the whole time she’s on her tummy or she just sucks on her hand and goes to sleep . But she loves to sit and be held upright and she has excellent head control when in that position and can hold her head when she wants to look around, so I’m trying to make sure she gets tummy time but not worry too much if she doesn’t (or if it only lasts for 30 seconds)

I’m glad Callie’s hips are in a normal position now. I used to work for Shriners, so I’m familiar with the braces/casts/harnesses, etc. I always feel bad for the poor babies, but they handle it like champs! The frequent doctor appts are a struggle, for sure, and I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with them, too.

As far as making tummy time more fun goes, I second laying on your back with [name_f]Callie[/name_f] on your chest or belly, especially if she’s the kind of baby who likes to be cuddled and held like both ours. haha [name_u]Adley[/name_u] hated tummy time, as well, so we let her lay tummy down on our chests as often as possible and we just talk to her or sing songs or show her rattles and other fun toys while we did. She probably didn’t get tummy time as much as would be recommended, but she turned out fine. =]

I’m feeling really defeated right now. :weary:
[name_f]Magali[/name_f] just turned 2 weeks old yesterday, and I’ve been sick since [name_f]Monday[/name_f]. I’ve had fevers multiple times a day every day since [name_f]Monday[/name_f] and a migraine that won’t go away also since [name_f]Monday[/name_f]. On [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] I started with congestion, and so did my 3 year old. Now [name_f]Magali[/name_f] has been coughing and has congestion also since [name_m]Friday[/name_m]. The meds that I’m able to take for the fever and headache don’t do anything, and they can’t give me anything for migraines unless I wait 8 hours to breast feed.

Since I’m not going back to work until [name_u]September[/name_u] 13, I wasn’t worried about pumping too much, and what I had is almost used up because I’ve had to leave her with my sister in law to go to appointments. I have another appointment tomorrow, and I’m worried they will send me to the hospital and I will run out of breast milk.

Has anyone had to give a little bit of formula, and then were able to exclusively breast feed again? Did you mix the formula with the breast milk? I’ve never used formula before, but she has drank from a bottle two days this week and still wants to breastfeed.

You can mix formula in with breastmilk if you want to – but don’t add the powder to the milk, mix with water first and then add breastmilk. I don’t think the taste of formula will put her off breastmilk at all!

I’m sorry you’re feeling so crummy! I hope you can get the meds you need and start to feel better soon!

@jenni_lynn91 how are you doing now?

I’m sorry I’ve been so lousy at replying, still finding baby + toddler a mission. He’s ALWAYS on me in some way and I’m lousy at typing/texting one handed, so tend to just scroll through websites never actually replying! And she’s finding the adjustment to being a big sister hard and always wanting me to play with her and to have my full attention.

Thanks for checking on me @Kiriko!

The fevers went away, but I still have headaches every day. I found out I can take Imitrex for the headache while breastfeeding, but it doesn’t really help. At least I found out what was making us all sick. [name_f]Magali[/name_f] tested positive for RSV, which she must have gotten from [name_f]Kiana[/name_f]. I probably also had it as well, because something was causing fevers for over a week straight.

Besides watching her breathing and keeping her nose clear, there is nothing we can do for [name_f]Magali[/name_f] for the RSV since she is so little (only 3 weeks old).

I’m so sorry you guys have been sick, I’ve read RSV is really bad this year, hopefully you’re all on the mend. as for using formula, I’ve never used formula but we did bottle feed and breastfeed with our first and had no problems, in fact we had to take a break for a week and strictly pump and bottle feed and she never had a problem switching between the two. We tried a bunch of different bottles that were supposed to be breastfeeding friendly and ended up preferring the boon nursh bottles, but I’ve heard good reviews for others as well.

Poor little thing. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you all feel better soon. I’ve had congested newborns and it is so not fun. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a NoseFrida? Soooo much better than the suction bulb.
