Predictions for the US Girls' Top 10 in coming years

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] All,

I know the fun of guessing 2013’s stats is over since the list came out, but I’d love to talk about predictions for the near future (1-5 years from now) for the US top 10 list for girls. What names do you think will fall out? What ones do you think will leap in? The top 10 for girls has been fairly static for the past few years-- there was hardly any change in raw numbers for most of the names ([name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] all within a few hundred of 2012’s numbers; [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] actually increased)… so I anticipate it will be time for a shake up in the next few.

[name_f]My[/name_f] big hunch is about [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. It seems to be absolutely zooming. [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], too, I guess, though I also think that could fade quickly. I also think [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] has a shot at top 5 or even #1 in the next couple of years.

[name_f]My[/name_f] predictions for the next round of new names in the top 10 would include [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u] or [name_u]Avery[/name_u] (not sure both will make it), [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]. I also think [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] will inch inside the top 10 in 2014 or '15. [name_m]Wild[/name_m] card- maybe [name_f]Camila[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

As far as names that will slip, I think [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] will go first. And then quickly [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] will go on their heels. Maybe [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] too.

Thoughts? Anyone else?

I think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] & [name_u]Madison[/name_u] would go first, then [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. And [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] & [name_f]Ella[/name_f] will join, maybe [name_f]Lily[/name_f] too.

I was really hoping [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] would drop in the rankings since I love it so much but I only see it going up. I can see [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] going #1 too.

Top 10 for 2024:

  1. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
  3. [name_u]Harper[/name_u]
  4. [name_f]Ella[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
  6. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
  7. [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
  8. [name_f]Aria[/name_f]
  9. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]
  10. [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is very popular in the UK. The UK always seems a step ahead of the US in baby names which is why I think it won’t be long before [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] makes her transition to number 1. Plus the boyish nickname [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] will help.

[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is looking good for number 1 in the near future so I almost put her at the top. But ten years is a while in the baby name world which gives her enough time to give up the top position.

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] is a unisex name which is rising rapidly right now. With connections to celeb kids ([name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_m]Beckham[/name_m]) and classic authors ([name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u]) [name_u]Harper[/name_u] will be able to go far. I don’t think she has enough to reach number 1, however, due to the lack of nickname options and the masculine feel around her.

With [name_f]Ella[/name_f], everyone is saying that Frozen will give [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] a huge boost into the top 100. While this could happen, I think Frozen is more likely to give similar names like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] a big boost- enough to push her into the top 5.

[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] is just a hunch of mine but I see her more and more everyday it seems. And I can see why. She shares similar characteristics with the popular names, including the top ranked [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and it also has a nature-y appeal.

After being used for many celeb kids, [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] will come back looking stronger than ever. She has a vintage appeal that is reviving many oldies and she has a sweet sound. She’s feminine, classic, and fun to say giving her what it takes to really rise.

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] has a similar sound to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and several other common names as well as the trending -lyn ending. Plus, with cute nickname options such as [name_f]Evie[/name_f], it won’t take much for this former “old lady” name to make a comeback. She also adds icing to the cake by being “grandma’s name” for many families!

[name_f]Aria[/name_f] was destined for greatness when [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] reached the top 10. She’s spunky, smart, feminine, and also is a very likable character for many TV shows, including Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars and Game of Thrones. Her sound is similar to that of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] making it very easy for her slip up into the top ten.

[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] has it all. She’s boyish, she’s frilly, and the nickname option [name_f]Bree[/name_f], only helps. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] has a similar story to that of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] but the lack of usage in the media won’t get her as far.

Last but not least, [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]. [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is the Spanish spelling of the top ranked [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], and is climbing at her heels. [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is slimmer and spunkier than [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], making her a ninja of sorts, creeping into the top ten.

Honorable mentions: [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

Here’s my picks

  1. [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Mila[/name_f]
  4. [name_u]Harper[/name_u]
  5. [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
  6. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Maya[/name_f]
  8. [name_f]Lila[/name_f]
  9. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
  10. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], yeah, I forgot about [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! Isn’t the lead character in that new movie “The Fault In Our Stars” named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]? That could propel it quite high. Or not. You never know with these things.

I agree about [name_f]Aria[/name_f] becoming more popular, but I think we’ll see a [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]/[name_f]Zoey[/name_f] situation, where the true popularity doesn’t show up in the SSA rankings because of the alternate spelling [name_u]Arya[/name_u].

I think [name_u]Harper[/name_u] will go high, too, but not #1.

I don’t think a lot of people will name their kids [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], even with the character in TFIOS, until at least 10 more years. It was mainly younger people / teenagers that read it anyway and they might not be having kids for a while. Some people still consider it an “old lady name” but I love it and think it’s a beautiful name.

I think names like [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u] will fall somewhere between ranking 15 and 35.

I predict these names will rise in ranking: [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f].

Names such as [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] will rise or stay put.

I think names slowly moving up the popularity ladder include: [name_f]Maia[/name_f]/[name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and [name_f]Norah[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] will fall soon. I think [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], Iris, Isla, [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Mila[/name_f] will all rise.

I also think [name_f]Vita[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_f]Lux[/name_f] will go up in the charts. not top 10 though.
