I have been eyeing the name [name_f]Fern[/name_f] for some time but am hesitant to put it on my list because I am worried about it “making a comeback”. It was steadily increasing in popularity from 2000 to 2017, then all of the sudden… bam! In 2018 there were 120ish girls named [name_f]Fern[/name_f], putting it back on the top 2000 list. To put in perspective, between 2015-2017 it hovered with only 80ish girls named [name_f]Fern[/name_f] each year.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is “safe” to put the name on my list for a girl? Or will it continue to increase in popularity?
Thoughts?
I am unsure because it doesn’t have long vowel sounds and doesn’t start or end in a vowel. That seems to be a norm for most girl names. However, [name_u]Harper[/name_u] doesn’t fit that mold either and look what happened there!
I’d put it on your list. I think it’s one that’s known but because it’s wordy and different, unless a celeb uses it, I don’t think it’s going to surge in popularity.
Aw, I like [name_f]Fern[/name_f]. It’s so simple & homey. Reminds me of the little girl in '[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]‘s [name_m]Web[/name_m]’. I really do think it’s a safe one. I don’t see it jumping to the top any time in the foreseeable future. I think that it’s just a name nerd name, but too old lady-ish for the general public to use too much.
I can’t see [name_f]Fern[/name_f] becoming wildly popular in the general public, but I can see it being very accepted. It’s a name you don’t hear much, fits in with the old-lady genre, but could easily slide into the nature-loving, spunky slot too.
I think keep it on your list! I hear about youtubers talk about it but it feels like one of those names that a lot of people love, but not that many use!
It might increase, but I don’t think it will make the top 1,000 (with [name_u]Harper[/name_u] it has similar endings with [name_u]Piper[/name_u], etc. and Beckhams used it. Also I think the fact the [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is one syllable will mean it will be less popular as a first name since two and three syllable names are the names most used for girls now). I’d be surprised if it continues to rise, but you can always keep it on your list and take it off later instead of taking it off prematurely if it’s a name you really like.
I’m not that bothered personally by popularity but I would definitely add [name_f]Fern[/name_f] to your list. I really don’t think she’ll suddenly jump in popularity where she’ll become the next [name_u]Harper[/name_u] but I don’t think she will be surprising if you came across a fern in the playground
