Pregnancy Tests

Im a couple dates late on my period, with many PMS symptoms. Cramps, fatigue, mood swings! And for some reason, heightened anxiety as of yesterday. I took a pregnancy test the day I though i was supposed to get my period, and didnt… 3 days ago. It was negative. It was a really cheap Kroger brand test, nothing special.

Im thinking maybe I should retest if I dont get my period tomorrow morning. But I was wondering, are some tests more effective or accurate than others? I mean, there has to be a reason why one test is $18 and another only $6 right?

Usually tests don’t read correctly until 1 week after your missed period or conception.

I don’t think there is a test that is more reliable than another…

First Response is probably your best bet. I’ve never actually used the brand but the commercial says it can detect pregnancy hormones 6 days sooner than your first missed period. The result should be accurate.

Thanks for the input! I guess I will wait a few days then to retest!

Another question! When you actually, take the test, should the horizontal and vertical lines of a positive test show up at tge same time? or can one line show and then the other develop later?

Thanks!

I think on mine the control line showed up first, then the positive line, but the important thing is to check it when the package says to. A few minutes can feel like a lifetime if you’re staring at the test trying to tell if it’s turning or not.

I have always had irregular cycles, so I have taken many tests over the years…here is my advices:

  1. Stay away from tests that use blue dye. I have gotten a false positive on a bad batch (a true false positive not an early loss, confirmed by the company as well as a blood test etc…since I have the while RH factor thing going on with dh I need the shot after a mc dso I tend to jump on this sort of thing…) And knowing enough moms, I am not the only one to have this happen with the blue dye tests.

  2. Stay away from the tests that turn into a plus sign, I find the evap lines on these to contrast with the control line and be confusing, so just stear clear.

  3. Stay away from digital tests unless you already know you are pregnant a few days past when your period was due, and, already have seen a bfp on a regular test. They have gotten more sensitive (and cheaper as well) since hitting tje market a few years ago, but I know so many women who have gotten a bfp on a regular test, got a digital “just to make sure” and then see the words “not pregnant” staring back at them causing them to panic and ultimately, spend more money on tests and add stress into their lives.

  4. Dollar store tests? I love them! Cheap, easy to take, accurate, and best of all only a dollar. With this babe I got a bfp first on a test from [name]Wall[/name] [name]Mart[/name] that I think was 88cents. Not believing it (we were preventing) I splurged on a generic store brand test (pink dye, supposedly “can tell days before your period”, either from cvs or rite aid I forget and got a bfp then too. I was 2 days before my period was due, so 3 when i took the cheapo test. I had a weird nipple pain when Vio nursed and also realized that I had no “leading up to my period” signs which is why I took it in the first place, for “fun” I guess. Lol.

I am probably missing stuff, but those are my main points. Good luck!

I don’t recall what brand I used, but it formed a plus sign. I also had irregular periods and had been told it would be very unlikely I’d conceive naturally but when you only have a period twice a year it can cause paranoia if you’re trying not to, so I’d taken a lot over the years too. My positive tests were really faint and if I hadn’t seen a bunch of negatives, I might not have realized the difference. I was up to a period every 2-3 months by that time and it had only been 6 weeks, but I was having nausea (not related to my chronic migraines) and tender breasts. After the first faint positive, I took another the next day with the same result and just wasn’t sure, so I made an appointment at Planned Parenthood. They were able to confirm the pregnancy and the visit only cost about $40 instead of the $150 I paid for my first OB appt, in which they did essentially the same things as PP had.

I completely agree that dollar store tests are great. They are so cheap and they work as well or better than the more expensive ones.

Took a Clear [name]Blue[/name] digital and a cheap internet strip test on the day that my period was due and both were negative (although when I pulled the clear blue strip out of the digital reader, i saw a faint blue line next to the control line…internet research said that those lines on digital tests do not mean anything…???). I managed to wait 3 days and took the same 2 types of tests again first thing in the morning and the digital said “pregnant” and the strip test was very, very faint but the 2nd line was there all the same. After work, I retested (same types again!) and the strip got darker…next morning, darker again!
In summary, the cheap ones and the expensive ones gave me a BFN until 3 days after my period was due. (Blood test confirmed the pregnancy the day after my 1st positives at home.)

They’re all pretty similar. I’ve only ever used tests from the dollar store and they worked just fine and they showed positive for my pregnancies the day I missed my period. I also agree that you should avoid the blue dye tests because they’re notorious for showing false positives.

For the most part I’d say the cheap ones work just as well as the more expensive kind.
