So i’m 17 weeks pregnant and find out in a couple of weeks the gender of my baby which is so exciting! i’ve been focussing on girls names as with boys i feel more confident about my name choices. Now last name is W***er
and really quite common! For a girl i REALLY want do use [name]Moira[/name] as a middle name as it is my grandmother’s middle name and we’ve come through a lot together particularly in the last year that has drawn us together.
Because the middle name and last name are both two syllables with the emphasis on the first i think the first name needs to be 3 syllables to ‘sound right’ or possibly two but ending in y or ee sound because of the er and a sounds already.
I really really like [name]Helena[/name] [name]Moira[/name] with the hell-in-a pronounciation i think it’s beautiful and nearly perfect! the only bit i really worry about is the ‘hell’ part of the name!
So along with [name]Helena[/name] [name]Moira[/name] i wanted some other similar options
names i’m liking are [name]Coralie[/name] (cora-lee pronounced but starting to like cora-lie too)
i also recently discovered [name]Elowen[/name]! I like it said ello-win but have heard that would then be wyn and masculine so hmm. also [name]Elowen[/name] or Elowyn isn’t quite right i keep feeling like i’m about to say [name]Eloise[/name] (i dont like [name]Eloise[/name]!)
I love the Ls in names it seems but i also love [name]Ebony[/name]! dont think i could use that though because i had an eating disorder for a long time since 12 and people would think oh yes the anorexic naming her kid eBONY! i also like the yn or lyn ending from Elowyn so have been trying to think of names that end in lyn or in that i like. Not a fan or [name]Marilyn[/name] and thats all i can think of!
I like [name]Evelyn[/name] too (oh thats another lyn name!) but is it too popular? i’m worried about all the Evas Avas popping up!
i like names with more delicate sounds but i also have an angel baby whose name i love [name]Tessa[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. Is [name]Tessa[/name] delicate to me it is? I like [name]Libby[/name] but can’t use [name]Elizabeth[/name] as is a good friends name! haha i seem so fussy! my cat is [name]Claudia[/name] which i love and wish i hadnt wasted on a cat lol! any suggestions? i have briefly considered [name]Amanda[/name], [name]Kirby[/name] and [name]Alice[/name]
Firstly, congratulations, and secondly-- what a lovely idea, to honor your grandmother in such a way. I’m sure she’ll be deeply touched.
I think your analysis of rhythm and meter is correct. To pair with [name]Moira[/name] (2-syllables, emphasis on the first) and “[name]Warner[/name]” (emphasis on the first, a 3-syllable first name ALSO with emphasis on the first is best. (Basically, you want to separate stressed syllables). Example: [name]JEN[/name]-ni-fer MOI-ra WAR-ner.
I would avoid Rs since [name]Moira[/name] and W***er both have them. I think, should you so choose, alliteration with an M first name would be fine. Obviously avoid a first name ending with M, to avoid crashing into [name]Moira[/name].
And with all that, we’re off. [name]One[/name] by one through your suggestions:
[name]Helena[/name] with your pronunciation is good in terms of meter; unfortunately the double -ah sounds make the combination a little less euphonious. It rhymes-- [name]Helen[/name]-[name]AH[/name] Moir-[name]AH[/name]
[name]Coralie[/name] [name]Moira[/name] won’t work due to the repetition of [name]CORalie[/name] and [name]MOIRa[/name].
[name]Elowen[/name] flows very well- the meter is correct, and it has softer sounds to balance [name]Moira[/name].
[name]Ebony[/name] in the US is given as an African-American pride name. Not sure if it carries the same significance down your way, but unless you’re Aboriginal I’d think twice.
Some suggestions:
[name]Jessamine[/name] / [name]Jessamyn[/name]: the antique English name for the jasmine flower
[name]Jocelyn[/name]: this is a medieval name which has been in use since before the [name]Norman[/name] Conquest; it’s also occasionally spelt Josselin
[name]Ceridwen[/name]: the old Welsh goddess of poetry
Ysaline: an old variant of [name]Yseult[/name], from [name]Tristan[/name] & [name]Isolde[/name]. The name of a minor princess in Europe currently.
[name]Winnifred[/name]: I know-- what? But the meaning is “blessed reconciliation,” which might hold a great deal of meaning for you and your grandmother. The nn [name]Win[/name] or [name]Winnie[/name] is very sweet.
[name]Arianell[/name]: an old Welsh word for ‘silver.’
My favorite from your list is [name]Elowen[/name]! I also like the suggestions of [name]Amelie[/name], [name]Arielle[/name]/[name]Ariella[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], and [name]Everly[/name].
oh my gosh so many beautiful names! this is why i’m loving nameberry hehe!
[name]Everly[/name] [name]Moira[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Moira[/name]
also loving [name]Elodie[/name] and [name]Evelyn[/name]! i have always had trouble with [name]Elodie[/name] feeling too similar to [name]Melody[/name] but its really growing on me! still liking [name]Coralie[/name]… i think i am going to have to sit down and write them all out and say them aloud a lot! [name]Gwendolyn[/name] is also growing on me only problem is i have a hen called gwen (lol!) she actually lives with the flock at my parents house (not far away) but [name]Gwen[/name] is still a hen!
