Where I live there is a list of names we can use which really bothers me since I am a name lover… there are a few names added to the list every year but a lot of them are forbidden
I am hopping this will change eventually or else I don’t know what I’ ll name my children because either the name is over popular or is underused and everyone will judge you
But anyways let’s get to the point… I like the name [name_f]Primavera[/name_f] (means [name_f]Spring[/name_f]) but it’s not accepted (only as a middle I think) but I would like to know your opinions, some combos you can come up with and siblings that came to mind?
[name_f]Primavera[/name_f] is pronounced: Pri- muh- vair- uh
Ps: we can only use one middle name here as well but once again you can come up with two middles
There are lots of nn possibilities with this name - Pri, Pria, [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], Prim.
It makes me think of names like [name_f]Cerelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cefariana[/name_f].
I’m happy to bring you good news! The list doesn’t exist anymore! The rules changed a few years ago. In 2017, to be more exact. However, I think they didn’t care a lot about sharing this news because (in my opinion) they want people to believe they have to chose and prefer the traditional names.
The new rules say that we can pick any name that belongs/belonged to a Portuguese citizen. For example, when someone gets dual nacionality, their names enter the list of admitted names. After that, anyone can choose the names, no matter the parents nationality or where the child is born. There is a new list online, but it is incomplete and it only includes the names of the children who were born and people who received their dual nationality between 2014-2016.
I have [name_f]Primavera[/name_f] on my list! I absolutely love it. It’s gorgeous and colorful. I actually have a distant family member with that name. The name was banned for some decades (I don’t understand why ), but now I’m confident that we can register [name_f]Primavera[/name_f] again because it will appear in the database as the name of a Portuguese citizen.
For now, we can only choose one middle name. However, when the old horrible list existed, there where a few “conjuntos onomásticos” that counted as one name.
Examples: [name_f]Flor[/name_f] de [name_u]Maria[/name_u], [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] do Carmo, [name_f]Filipa[/name_f] de Nazaré, [name_f]Flor[/name_f] de [name_f]Ceres[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f] do [name_f]Mar[/name_f], [name_u]Maria[/name_u] da Liberdade, [name_f]Inês[/name_f] [name_m]Pedro[/name_m], [name_m]Afonso[/name_m] Henriques , [name_m]David[/name_m] de Assis, [name_m]Filipe[/name_m] de Néri, [name_m]Nuno[/name_m] de [name_f]Santa[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u], [name_m]Vasco[/name_m] da Gama.
So, the rules say you can name a girl [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Flor[/name_f] de [name_u]Maria[/name_u] but not [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_f]Flor[/name_f]. It’s not coherent but it’s what we have…
You can see the most recent list here:
It definitely makes me think of pasta primavera, which, though delicious, is too strong an association for me to really see it as a name. But I do kind of see the appeal. “Prim” or “[name_f]Vera[/name_f]” might be nicknames that make it more wearable.
Since the list is incomplete I’m not sure if the names I like are acceptable which is a bum
I think in that case [name_f]Primavera[/name_f] is usable because it used to be allowed therefore portuguese people have been name that. However the biggest problem is the people itself since everyone actually prefers the tradicional names and every kid is name pretty much the same and when a name is different I feel like people always judge, especially if it is a word name. I hope one day they will allow more than one middle (middles are also not very common imo and once again people always judge middles not so traditional) and I hope the names I love which are not usual in Portugal in anyway are accepted once I have kids of my own
I tried to include variety of names, I feel you. In my country naming rules are pretty lax, only thing disallowed is dash and names that don’t feel or aren’t names, but people still feel very judgy and assy.
