Promise this is my last post about this 😂

TLDR: if we ever have a daughter, would feel obligated to in some way honor MIL or her mother. Their names aren’t really our style ($teph@nie @nne and C@rolyn) and scheming of ways they could be included with the first name Etta.

Looking for feedback on any of these options you love/hate.

And do you think Jeanne could work as a nod to someone with the middle name Anne? Or is that stretching it? Is Jeanne an odd spelling?
Does Jeanne sound too masculine? Would Etta Jeanne sound like Eddy Gene?

I know this is long. When I’m up nursing a baby all night I keep myself awake by revising name lists for future babies. Call me crazy.

Other random criteria: I also like the idea of Etta as a double barreled name, without legally having to deal with two first names. So basically two middles, the first being part of a nickname she goes by and the second an honor name.
For example, Etta Lucelia Anne nn Etta Lu

I also inexplicably love the combo Etta Jane and am totally hung up on it, so there are loads of combos with Etta Jane + a name I think flows into our surname nicely or Etta Jane + an honor name.

Like the meaning of Jane & Jeanne = God is gracious
Also like the meaning of Lucelia and how it flows with our last name, though it initially wasn’t my style.
Like that Lilianne contains Anne and a floral connection because they are very into gardening and the family once owned a nursery.

On [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] → I do think it works as a nod to a middle name [name_f]Anne[/name_f] as the letters are right there, even if the sounds don’t quite match up. [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] isn’t an odd spelling, but my first instinct is to pronounce like ZHAN (French pronunciation) rather than JEEN. I don’t think [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] sounds too masculine at all. The sound itself is decidedly gender neutral in my mind.

On combos containing honor names → I love the idea of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lu[/name_f] / [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] as a double name. While I appreciate the sentimentality of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f], the flow is a little off (-a A-). [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] gives me pause due to the aforementioned pronunciation issues. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f] doesn’t do a lot for me personally, though the flow is good. If you’re using the LEEN ending of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], but it’s quite rhyme-y with the JEEN pronunciation of [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f]. The flow of the [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] followed by mn ending in “n” sound is slightly off as well (Rheanne, Lilianne). I also don’t love the flow of back to back [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] for some reason. Rheanne is just not super aesthetically pleasing for me, though I agree with combines your honor names quite well. Would [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] appeal? [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] is also a song by [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] in which one of the lead singers is [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] Nicks and [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] could be short for [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]. Suuuuper stretchy connection, but I thought I’d mention it, ha! [name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorite from your options is [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Lucelia [name_f]Anne[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lu[/name_f].

On combos that do not contain honor names → [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] Luelle rhymes far too much for my taste as a double mn combo. [name_m]Loving[/name_m] [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] / [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] share a few too many sounds back to back for me. I like the flow of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Luelle, [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f]. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] is also quite charming! Would [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f] work as a nod to [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f]?

On the [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] combos → Loove [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. I feel like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] slightly defeats the purpose of using your beloved [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] just to call her [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f]?

On other random criteria → I think your solution of the double mn, but calling her a double first name is a good compromise. Though I may suggest that the double name may require quite heavy enforcement that may not be carried on by your daughter herself (i.e. I think there is a real possibility that she will just become [name_f]Etta[/name_f] at some point.)

I also love the [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] combo as well. And you may have warmed me to [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f] with the floral connection, how sweet! I also throw out the suggestion of Florianne / Floriane along similar lines. [name_m]Or[/name_m] [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] (Susannah meaning “lily”).

Hopefully some of this ramble is helpful for you. I’m really rooting for [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] in some form!

I think [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] is a very familar name to most, there’s nothing odd about the spelling and it doesn’t strike me as masculine. I don’t view it as a stretch as an honour for [name_f]Anne[/name_f], but maybe you could ask your spouse or your MIL what they think? Would they view it as an honour name?

Combos I’d remove:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] Luelle - I don’t like the rhymey middle names, to me they sound a bit awkward or silly when said out loud
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] - This is a bit nitpicky, but I don’t like how the -a of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] runs into the A- of the first middle name here
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] - I think with an F middle, [name_f]Fae[/name_f] feels a bit cutesy and redundant in the second middle name place. Same with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f] [name_f]Roselle[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] - It’s fine, but I think all the names being really short makes it flow less nicely than most of your other combos

I’m also not fond of Rheanne, personally, so I don’t love the combos including it. It just feels quite dated and takes away from the cute, vintage charm of [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

From your honour names combos, my favourites are:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f]

And from your other combos:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]

Some thoughts: could you use some -lyn spellings as an honour name for C@rolyn? For example, [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Emmelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]? And some more -anne names could be [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Vianne[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lianna[/name_f]? Would you maybe like some international variations of your honour names, like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Stefania[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Karolina[/name_f]? C@rolyn could also give you [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Carley[/name_f] or maybe [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Carina[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Kalina[/name_f]?

On your [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] questions ---- I think [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] would work well as an honor to [name_f]Anne[/name_f], and doesn’t feel masculine to me at all. However, I would say that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could also work as an honor, if you love that more, since the right letters are there and the meanings are very similar (“God is gracious” & “grace”).

Combos I would eliminate:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] Louelle (feel very rhyme-y)
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (kind of a tongue twister)
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f] (feels like a mouthful)

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite combos:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] LIlianne // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f] [name_f]Roselle[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]

Other ideas on how to honor:
C@rolyn:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lynn[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Corrine[/name_f]

Steph@nie Ann3:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] // [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Vivianne[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]

Additionally, I think any name ending in -lyn or -anne could work well as an honor!

First, thank you for such a thoughtful response! Wow, I didn’t think anyone would even read that whole novel I posted.

I agree with all of the insights you gave re-rhyme-y.
And yes, would absolutely expect that she just go by [name_f]Etta[/name_f] on everyday life, but we have nicknames that I call our other two on a daily basis, so I love the thought of being able to say “I love you [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Lu!” and it actually be part of her name.

[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] isn’t one that has ever really been in my radar. I do love [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] though so not sure why I haven’t given it much thought before. The [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] suggestion makes more since than my Rheanne. They aren’t my favorites of all do the choices but if we felt the need to smoosh multiple honors into one it would work. I think all of the ones you mean I ones preferring are the same ones I keep coming back to as favorites.

The Florianne / Floriane suggestion is super intriguing!!! Going to look more into that, but I live that it contains [name_f]Anne[/name_f] and the floral connection! Never would have thought of that in my own, thank you! Before we found out our first child was a boy, [name_f]Flora[/name_f] was one of the very few names my husband contributed to the name list and actually liked, so it would be sweet to incorporate.

I’m guessing it’s said like [name_f]Jean[/name_f]? Still, I do think it could work :person_shrugging: [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] doesn’t sound masculine to me.

Some thoughts on your honour list:

Some I like:

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] Lucelia [name_f]Anne[/name_f] - cute and unexpected

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] - elegant and charming

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f] - this is really pretty - light and lovely

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] - so cute and bright

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] - sweet and charming and sophisticated

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] - I think this flows better than [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f] [name_f]Roselle[/name_f] - playful and sparky

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] Rheanne - I like it :person_shrugging: It’s unexpected and cool

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lillianne[/name_f]- this is lovely! Elegant with a bit of sparkle

Some I’m not sure on:
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] but [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and -liese are a bit much for me? [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Luelle [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] - or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Luanne[/name_f] ‘Etta Lu’

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] - I find it a bit choppy? Not unusable though

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - a bit rhymey for me. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f]?

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] - a teeny bit much for me, but [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] could work?

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites from your non-honour list:

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] ‘Etta Bee’?
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f] :hibiscus:

Agree with the rhyme-y and choppy assessments you gave.

WHY DID I NOT THINK OF [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Bee?!?!
Now I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of loving the nicknames Bee/Bea on their own or as shortenings for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. Also adore the meanings for all of them.
I love the option of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Bee[/name_f].
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] actually flows super well with our last name, but I’m not sure if [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] would be too much?
[name_m]Or[/name_m] [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]? But that brings back the ending and beginning a’s clashing.

Thank you for the feedback as always!

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] works for me - the sounds balance each other out for me.

I like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] too!

I feel like you’ve got a ton of really good feedback, but I just wanted to pop in to say:

  1. I love [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] - so lovely!
  2. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lu[/name_f] as a nickname is precious.
  3. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is super sweet and there is absolutely no reason [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] would be too much!! [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] works well too.

A few other thoughts:

  • [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] totally works as an honour
  • I don’t know your story so not sure why you would feel obligated to honour someone - I wouldn’t honour unless you and your partner want to! I have an honour middle name and it is special to me only because my parents had really special people that they wanted to honour, not because it was an obligatory honour.
  • [name_f]My[/name_f] grandma’s name is [name_f]Carol[/name_f] and I’d love to honour her - a fun honour name I’ve thought of is [name_f]Coral[/name_f] or [name_f]Cora[/name_f] (just flipping the A & O) and I thought these could work for honouring Car0lyn for you. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is super sweet.
  • Another honour name option could be something like [name_f]Lianne[/name_f] - “Li” from “Lyn” of Car0lyn and “Anne” from Steph@nie @nne (Lilianne was on your list, so maybe you realize the “Li” part honours Car0lyn, or maybe you feel it’s a stretch). Another honour name could be [name_f]Cara[/name_f].
