[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]? I know there are multiple correct pronunciations, but I’m curious to know what the most common pronunciation is. Also I’d like it if you could tell me what region of the US you’re from if you’re American. Thanks!
muh-thigh-us
I’m from Southern [name_u]California[/name_u].
tie-us and tee-us wouldn’t have the H ([name_m]Mattias[/name_m]/[name_m]Matias[/name_m])
I pronounce it like Muh-tee-us and that’s the only way I’ve heard it pronounced. I’m from the [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Northwest of the US.
I’m in the northeast
I would probably say muh-tie-us
[name_m]Matthias[/name_m] - ma-thigh-us (hate this!)
[name_m]Mattias[/name_m] - ma-tee-us (love this!)
I have never heard the ma-tie-us pronunciation, (not a fan of it) but I would probably spell it [name_m]Matias[/name_m] (looks kinda wrong though!)
Ma-thigh-us - I am from [name_f]Arizona[/name_f]
I say it:
Ma-thigh-us (this is how I’ve always heard it pronounced)
[name_f]May[/name_f]-thee-us (this is how I first thought it was pronounced but I think this way is incorrect)
I’m from and currently live in Southern [name_f]Maine[/name_f], but grew up in Central [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f].
I say [name_u]Mat[/name_u]-ty-us. I’m Canadian, but rather close to the NY state border.
I am from Australia and we pronounce it like this too.
Mah- tee- us
Midwest (Wisconsin)
From the midwest
I pronounce it Muh-thigh-us. It is the middle name of a former friend’s baby brother.
[name_f]My[/name_f] father’s name is [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], pronounced muh-THIGH-us. He was born overseas but that seems to be the most common pronunciation here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] too.
muh-tai-us or matt-ias
I used to think [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] was pronounced Mah-thee-us, but I now immediately use the Muh-thigh-us pronunciation because that’s the one I see used the most often online. I’m from [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m].
Thanks everyone! It seems like I should be considering the [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] spelling since I’m not a fan of the “thigh-us” pronunciation. [name_m]Even[/name_m] then, I’m not sure I like the possibility of my [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] deciding he wants to go by [name_m]Matt[/name_m]. Hmm.
