[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce it? As a non-native English speaker I’d think “Wyle-der” like “wild and wilder”, but then I was thinking I’d quite like the name if it were pronounced “[name_m]Will[/name_m]-der”.
I seem to be in the minority but I pronounce it a [name_m]Will[/name_m]-der, like will-son. I like that it lends itself to nn [name_m]Will[/name_m] and feels more distinguished than the more ‘wild’ pronouncuation
I’ve always heard her name pronounced the wyle-der way. [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] is a pretty common surname, and I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it as [name_m]Will[/name_m]-der only Wyle-der.
I can see why most native English speakers would mispronounce the name [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] like the actual English word wilder. It is easy to associate the name with the word when you first read it for obvious reasons and therefore the sound of the word is what comes to mind first. I am pretty sure the name [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] (when used as a first name) is pronounced [name_m]Will[/name_m]-der and Not While-der. When it is used as a last name as in the case of [name_u]Gene[/name_u] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]… Most people prefer While-der so there can exist a distinction between the first and last name. I have heard both versions being pronounced for a first name and when it is pronounced the right way It just sound so beautiful! [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] Hawn has an adorable grandson named [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].

I’ve got to be honest… I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it [name_m]Will[/name_m]-der. I pronounce it While-der, and that’s the way I’ve always heard everyone else say it.
I agree. I’d guess almost all native English speakers are going to default to [name_m]WILD[/name_m]-er. If you want [name_m]WILL[/name_m]-der, I think you’d have to spell it that way; otherwise you’d never get that pronunciation.
wyal-dah, it’s how I say the world wild and I added er (which with my accent is like an ah). Maybe adding another l would change the pronunciation to the one you are after
I always though it was wyle-der, as in Almanzo [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] from [name_m]Little[/name_m] House on the Prarie. The pronunciation will-der makes me think of the word bewilder, so I like wyle-der better.
