Pronounciation SARE-ee?

Hello, berries! I am trying to decide how to spell this name. I want it to sound like [name]Mary[/name] with an S instead of M. SARE-ee. [name]How[/name] would you spell the name to make sure it’s not mistaken as being prounced SAH-ree?

[name]Sarai[/name]? Maybe.

My boss’s name is Ceairy…and its pronounced “sare-ee”.

The absolute easiest answer, of course, would be [name]Sary[/name]. Then at least she can say, “It’s [name]Sary[/name] - like [name]Mary[/name] with an S.” I think all spellings are doomed to be mispronounced, but this would be the easiest to get through life with.

I think Sarey is easiest. Or Sairy-rhymes-with-hairy.

I would echo this. I went to school with a Latina [name]Sarai[/name]–in Spanish it was pronounced more like sah-rah-ee, but English-speaking Americans messed it up so much she just went by SARE-ee. I think [name]Sarai[/name] said like SARE-ee is beautiful. I like it much more than sah-[name]RYE[/name], actually. It’s not as popular as the sah-[name]RYE[/name] pronunciation, but if you correct a couple people at the beginning, it wouldn’t be too much of a problem.

I knew a girl named Sairé once, pronounced Sare-ee. I thought it was pretty

thanks for all the help, guys! I think this is my final list! Which one do you like best?

[name]Sary[/name]
Sarie
Sarey
[name]Sarai[/name]

[name]Sary[/name] will, at first glance, probably be pronounced the way you want. You might also get sari, the [name]Indian[/name] women’s garment.

Sarie will rhyme with [name]Marie[/name], “Sa-[name]REE[/name]”

Sarey is completely unambiguous, given the surname [name]Carey[/name]

[name]Sarai[/name], [name]IMO[/name], will almost never be pronounced the way you want. You’ll either get Sa-[name]RYE[/name], the classic pronunciation, or [name]Sarah[/name].

My vote is Sarey.

[name]Sarai[/name] is suh-[name]RYE[/name] or suh-RAH-ee, I’d never guess SARE-ee.
I knew a girl with that pronunciation spelled [name]Sari[/name]. She got SAH-ree all the time. I agree with pps who said [name]Sary[/name] and Sarey are the best option. If you use [name]Sarah[/name] with the nickname [name]Sary[/name]/Sarey/Sairy/whatever spelling, you’d probably have more people get it right.

I’ve known two women named [name]Sari[/name] who both pronounced the name SARE-ee. Nameberry says that that spelling is supposed to be pronounced sah-ree, but this runs counter to my two real life encounters with the name. It’s true that it may be confused because of the [name]Indian[/name] clothing, but they’re two completely different etymologies.

I would pronounce [name]Sarai[/name] suh-[name]RYE[/name] (as others have said), so if you want people to pronounce it SEHR-ee, I would absolutely avoid [name]Sarai[/name].

Sarey is probably your best. [name]Blade[/name]'s analysis is spot on.

[name]Sarai[/name] is pronounced sah-[name]RYE[/name]. Very pretty name, but probably not the spelling for this pronunciation. The only way I’ve ever been able to think of to spell it is Sairi or Sairy. I like the suggestion of [name]Sary[/name], though. Simple, and virtually to the point.

[name]Sary[/name] or [name]Sari[/name] - definitely not [name]Sarai[/name].
