Pronouncing Jessamine

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I want to name my daughter [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] [name_u]Marie[/name_u], I just love the look and sound of it. Unfortunately I don’t pronounce [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] as its spelt. It’s pronounced [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-a-min but I love [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-a-mean instead.

Obviously I don’t want to spell the name as Jessamean because of connotations and it just looks wrong. So what do you think I should do? Should I use [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] and pronounce it wrong or should I find a different spelling? And how would you spell it?

I just really don’t want to give up the name I hear in my head. Thank you!

Lovely combo! I would just spell it as is because all it takes is a quick correction if someone mispronounces it. Also, it would be her middle name, which isn’t used very often. The only alternate spelling I can think of that looks nice is Jessamene, but I do prefer the correct spelling.

@fearlessfirefly Thank you! I feel like I’m over thinking it but I had to get more opinions!

Wow I genuinely thought it was pronounced [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-a-mean anyway. Learn something new everyday…

I pronounce [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] the same as you. Especially since the name isn’t and never has been super well known and it’ll be in the middle, I think you’re good.

I do pronounce it jess-uh-min, but I agree with PPs about it being in the middle spot, so it’s really not that big of a deal since you won’t have to correct a bunch of people that just call her name out. And correcting people about the pronunciation of the middle name will be less often and therefore less tedious, I think.

I think you can use that spelling and still pronounce it the way you prefer. It helps that it’s a mn, so I don’t think you’ll have to deal with everyone mispronouncing it, as you might with a fn.

I would have pronounced it the way you like it! :joy: I suggest keep the spelling and pronounce it the way you like.

I’m more familiar with the -min endings ([name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]) but the -meen endings ([name_f]Yasmine[/name_f]) are not so uncommon that people would be thrown off course by the correction - so yeah, it’s just a middle name, go ahead and use the preferred spelling and correct people as you need to.

Not a problem since it’s a middle, also [name_f]Jessa[/name_f]-min and [name_f]Jessa[/name_f]-mean aren’t hugely different. Use it.

I pronounce it the same! It’s not a huge issue in my opinion, you should stick with the name you love!

I pronounce it like [name_u]Jess[/name_u] -a-Mean anyway and I think it’s an entirely plausible pronunciation from the spelling. Again like others have said, it’s a middle name so you can pronounce it however you like.

I agree that [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-a-mean is intuitive pronunciation! I think you should stick with this spelling.

I’m pretty sure [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] can be pronounced both ways! I love [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]! [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] [name_u]Marie[/name_u] is a gorgeous combo!

I love that combo. I think either pronounciation works!

I do like [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-uh-min more, but I don’t think it’s a familiar enough name to most that [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-uh-mean would confuse anyone. I’d say it however the person does.

Well, I’ve been pronouncing [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] wrong  As a middle name, I think your pronunciation is fine

I pronounce it as [name_u]Jess[/name_u]-uh-mean, much like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. And as far as i know both are correct pronunciations. So I say go for it

I’ve always pronounced it jess-a-mean!

I think because it is a middle name, you have more flexibility for different pronunciations. I would keep [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] with this spelling.
