Pronunciation? Ariane

Hello!

I came across the name “[name_f]Ariane[/name_f]”. I love “[name_u]Ari[/name_u]” names, but most are too popular for my liking. I think this could be an alternative, but I can’t decide how it should be pronounced. I’ve heard:

“air-ee-anne” I’m worried it sounds like “hairy anne”. Is it just me?

“air-ee-on” does this sound too masculine? Her sister’s name is very feminine, so I worry this will feel out of place

“air-ee-ahna” I feel this might be confusing, since [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] seems more intuitive, at least in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]

Is there a pronunciation you prefer? Or should I stick to [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], or something else? [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] are still too popular for me, unfortunately.

I think you’re fine with air-ee-anne or air-ee-on, although I prefer the second one. I don’t think it sounds any less feminine! I also like the third pronunciation but I do think it would be less intuitive than [name_f]Ariana[/name_f].

When I read [name_f]Ariane[/name_f] my mind first goes to ari-ahn.

I would pronounce this as ah - ree - anne, such a pretty name

I would say this are-ee-ann. It’s a gorgeous name, and I love the nickname [name_u]Ari[/name_u]!

I’ve thought about this one before. Recently I watched a house renovation show (Australian) on tv where the house owner was [name_f]Ariane[/name_f]. The main commentator of the show pronounced her name at least 4 different ways during the show:

  1. Ar–ee-anne with first syllable like tary and last anne
  2. Ar-ee-arn with same first syllable but different end
  3. Ar like car-ee-anne with different first syllable but same end
  4. Ar like car-ee arn with ar sound in both first and last.

I tried to catch her husband’s pronunciation of it but didn’t get it. Her last name was [name_m]French[/name_m] so I assume it would be no. 4, but you’ll get everthing with this one. I assume in the US it would be Ar like [name_f]Air[/name_f] for the first syllable (like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]), which is another pronunciation altogether, which we don’t tend to do in Australia.

I pronounce it [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] without the last a. Ar-ee-ahn
