Pronunciation Dilemma - Anthony

I like the name [name_m]Anthony[/name_m], but only when pronounced with the TH not just T (I also dislike the nickname [name_u]Tony[/name_u]!). It seems like the T pronunciation is predominantly used in the UK (where I live). Would a British kid named [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] constantly have to correct people?

The ‘TH’ pronunciation sounds very American to me; I don’t think I’ve ever heard [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] pronounced with the ‘TH’ sound here. I have an immediate family member with the name and he’s never had his name pronounced like that, so you’ll/he’ll probably have to do a lot of correcting, sorry

I dont know about in the UK, but in the US I definitely think that [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] with a TH is more prevalent. The only time I would think to to use a hard T is if someone told me specifically. The only [name_u]Tony[/name_u]'s I know are [name_m]Antonio[/name_m]'s

I’m in the UK and I’ve only ever heard it said as ‘anT-ony’, I didn’t know it could be pronounced with the ‘TH’! I think you’d be constantly correcting people. As for nn [name_u]Tony[/name_u], the [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]'s I know have never gone by [name_u]Tony[/name_u] and nobody have ever assumed its their nn so I don’t think it would be a problem.

I’m agreeing with everyone else in that the pronunciation would be a problem in the UK if you want the ‘th’ pn. Sorry. :frowning:

Thanks for the replies. It does seem the T pronunciation is used almost exclusively here sigh. I’ll probably keep it as a middle only, which is a shame as it’s a lovely name. Thanks again, Berries x
