Pronunciation of Clio

So my husband and I are pretty set on [name]Clio[/name] for our little girl, who is due in a month. We prefer that spelling to [name]Cleo[/name] because it looks nicer, and we also have some children’s books that have animals named [name]Cleo[/name], so we want to differentiate. But I was talking to my sister today, and she insisted that [name]Clio[/name] spelled with an I is pronounced to rhyme with eye-o. She used to be really into Greek mythology. My husband said that the [name]Clio[/name] fashion awards are pronounced Clee-o. So we looked it up online and it seems that there is a lot of confusion there, but I’d like to know if her name is going to cause pronunciation confusion before we bestow it upon her. We might still choose [name]Clio[/name], but at least we’d be aware. [name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Clio[/name] if you saw it? Any opinions on the right or wrong way to say it?

I would pronounce it the same as [name]Cleo[/name]. To me it’s pretty intuitive. If you are really, really worried about the pronunciation though, I’d use [name]Cleo[/name] just because it’s more recognizable. [name]Love[/name] the name, by the way.

I agree with pp, I’d say it the same as [name]Cleo[/name] unless told otherwise

[name]Clio[/name] is adorable! I would pronounce it as [name]Cleo[/name].

[name]Clio[/name] is a great name. I would definitely pronounce it like [name]Cleo[/name]. I’ve never heard of the pronunciation your sister mentioned. I don’t think you’d have pronunciation problems (at least not more than any other name outside the top 100!)

I’ve always pronounced it the same as [name]Cleo[/name]. I’ve never heard of the other pronunciation before. I don’t think you’d have too much of a problem with mispronunciation. If you had to correct someone, I would think you’d only have to do it once and they’d get it every time after that. If you had to correct anyone, which I don’t see happening very often. For what it’s worth, I love [name]Clio[/name] and think it’s a great name that will age well and will never be too trendy or too old-fashioned. I don’t think you can go wrong with [name]Clio[/name] and if you love it, go for it!

[name]Hope[/name] this helps!

[name]Clio[/name] is the Greek goddess of history and heroic poetry and one of the nine Muses. Although some “i”'s in Greek are pronounced like “eye” , in my numerous years of reading about mythology and baby names, I’ve never heard or seen it pronounced any way but “klee-oh”. I prefer the spelling [name]Clio[/name] to [name]Cleo[/name] as I’ve always felt that [name]Cleo[/name] was just a nn for [name]Cleopatra[/name]. [name]Clio[/name] is one of my faves along with [name]Juno[/name] so I would only encourage you to choose it for your daughter. It’s rarely used and it has a fun and and spunky feel!
