I love the look of the name [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], but I am unsure of it’s correct pronunciation. I would naturally say [name_f]Emme[/name_f]-[name_f]LINE[/name_f], but is it supposed to be [name_f]Emme[/name_f]-[name_u]LYNN[/name_u] or [name_f]EMMA[/name_f]-lyn? What do y’all think?
I think the legitimate pronunciations are emma-leen and emma-line. The first one would be my preference.
The others, in all honesty, sound a bit silly to me.
I say Emmaleen.
Thanks! That’s really helpful!
I also say it as Emmaleen.
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] rhymes with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or emma-leen. Either is legit. You could do [name_f]Emma[/name_f] -lynn too, but I’d recommend the more common [name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f] spelling for that.
I prefer it to rhyme with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] myself, emme-leen sounds exactly like [name_f]Emily[/name_f] to me, so I think it would be confused for [name_f]Emily[/name_f] all the time.
Considering that you are in [name_u]Texas[/name_u], I would expect to hear [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line, [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen, or [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-lynn about equally. I know a Southern bell with this spelling who pronounces it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line so drawn out that the ending almost sounds like “lion.” (:
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line for me. The [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-lyn pronunciation is okay, but I don’t like the [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen pronunciation.
I only know of the line and leen ending and I much prefer the line pronunciation.
I have a cousin with that name & she pronounces it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line.
i say [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]- line or [name_f]Emma[/name_f] -lene.
I say [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line because that’s how it was pronounced in the movie version of [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of Avonlea.
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (English form): [name_f]EM[/name_f]-a-line (rhymes with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f]) although [name_f]EM[/name_f]-a-leen is acceptable
[name_f]Emmaline[/name_f]: [name_f]EM[/name_f]-a-leen
[name_f]Emeline[/name_f] ([name_m]French[/name_m]): em-LEEN (emphasis on the last syllable)
