pronunciation of rhea?

I have found on various websites the pronunciation of [name]REE[/name] ah. But many people also say that they pronunce it [name]Ray[/name] ah, or just [name]Ray[/name]. Does anyone know if either of the latter two is a legitame pronunciation for this name?

I pronounce [name]Rhea[/name] as “[name]REE[/name]-uh” like Cheers actress [name]Rhea[/name] Perlman. Some people pronounce it “[name]RAY[/name]-uh” due to their accents or culture. Others may think that [name]Rhea[/name] is a “yooneek” spelling of [name]Ray[/name]/[name]Rae[/name] and pronounce it like those names but I don’t think it’s legitimate.

I agree, I pronounce it ‘[name]Ree[/name]-uh’, and have known a couple throughout my life who have pronounced it that way.

I think they are both perfectly legitimate pronunciations, I think [name]Ray[/name]-ah is more of the Classical Latin pronunciation, while [name]REE[/name]-ah, is English. I tend to say it the English way.

I automatically pronounce it [name]Ray[/name]-uh, but like pp said, I think both pronunciations are pretty legitimate. It would probably have a lot to do with where you live, I’d say to ask around your family and friends

My automatic pronunciation is also [name]RAY[/name]-uh, but I’ve heard [name]REE[/name]-uh and I’m pretty sure either is perfectly acceptable. I’ve also heard just [name]RAY[/name] as in the last name of actress [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Rhea[/name].

Yes I would say it ree-uh too, and I quite like it - except that it makes me think of rear as in backside lol

I know of someone with this name and she pn it like [name]Ray[/name]. That would be my automatic thought.

I think the original prn was ray-uh or ray, and like others said, the English version is ree-ah
[name]Just[/name] like [name]Astraea[/name] is ah-STRAY-uh

Its [name]Ria[/name]…that’s the only way I heard it

I automatically pronounce it like [name]Ray[/name] since I know 3 people with that pronunciation (similar to [name]Shea[/name]). However, I think [name]Ree[/name]-uh is the “correct” pronunciation from Greek mythology.

In my experience, it’s been a geographical thing. I grew up in [name]Texas[/name] and always heard it pronounced [name]Ray[/name]-a. However, I knew a little girl by that name, and her family (from up north) pronounced it [name]Ree[/name]-a.
