[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce the name [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]?
[name_m]Reading[/name_m] it on paper I see tal-yuh, with the first a being short, as in cat.
When I looked it up I found two completely different pronunciations: thuh-lie-uh and thay-lee-uh Can I take this to mean that there isn’t one correct pronunciation?
Please comment how you would pronounce [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] and where you’re from!
I think when I first saw it, I probably would have said THAH-lee-uh, but I very quickly decided I prefer the sound of [name_m]THAY[/name_m]-lee-uh (I think somewhere, probably not very reliable, said it was the Ancient Greek pronunciation) although it seems far fewer people (online anyway) say it like that.
I pronounce [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] somewhere in between [name_m]THAY[/name_m]-lee-uh and Thal-ya.
Behind the name user @kvpp88 explained it. “Since I’m actually Greek (fine, Greek American, but Greek was my first language and I’ve spent a lot of time in Greece), I can end this pronunciation debate. Obviously, depending on what language you speak, you’ll pronounce this name differently, but the correct Modern Greek pronunciation of this name is THA-lia. It is not [name_m]TAH[/name_m]-lia (Θ, the Greek letter theta, makes a th sound. Always), and if you want that pronunciation, there’s the perfectly nice name [name_f]Talia[/name_f], which is pronounced that way. It is not tha-LYE-uh, because in Greek, the accent falls on the first alpha (Θάλεια), so the first syllable is the emphasized one. It’s also not pronounced THA-ley-uh, as the ει in the name (epsilon iota), is a diphthong, which means it just makes a regular ee sound. Pronounce this name how you like in English- THA-lia, [name_m]TAH[/name_m]-lia (although I hate this pronunciation because the name [name_f]Talia[/name_f] makes more sense for it), THAYL-ya, tha-LYE-uh, or THA-ley-uh- you’re not wrong, really, but the proper Greek pronunciation is THA-lia”
My name happens to be [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], pronounced [name_m]THAY[/name_m]-lia or THAL-ee-a (that’s about as close as I can approximate a pronunciation). Growing up with this name, I have become very familiar with the wide variety of pronunciations out there, lol - I would say I get [name_m]TAH[/name_m]-lia, THAH-lia or thuh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-uh most often. I usually tell people that it rhymes with Australia, which is a good mnemonic.
I would say [name_m]Tah[/name_m]-lee-ah. [name_m]Tah[/name_m] like the a in clap.
No ‘Th’ sound at all. Occasionally the ‘ee-ah’ ending may turn into more of a ‘yuh’ sound, but for the most part they are distinct when I say them.
I’ve lived for about a decade in Greece (with some stays in other countries during the decade) but I speak Greek fluently. It is pronounced Tha-lya there.
In my mother tongue, [name_m]German[/name_m], it would be pronounced Ta-lee-ah (I don’t know if I wrote it correctly)
I have wondered the same before after looking it up. I went to grade school with a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] and she pronounced it [name_u]Tal[/name_u]-ya (a like cat) just like you said. Also took care of a baby at work recently with the name pronounced the same way. Those are the only two I’ve ever known of in real life.
The h is not silent with this spelling. If it was spelled [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f] or [name_f]Talia[/name_f], it would be pronounced the way you’re thinking. This is the Greek spelling of the name, and the h wouldn’t be silent in Greek so pronunciation would be thay-lee-ah or thay-lee-ya. In Greek mythology, [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] (or Thaleia) was one of the muses (of comedy and poetry). I wouldn’t spell it this way if I was planning on pronouncing it as [name_f]Talia[/name_f] since it’s well established that it’s pronounced with the “th” sound.
