Pronunciation Opinions

Hey guys!
I have recently fallen in love with the names [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. However, there are some disputes about pronunciation. I have five questions about each name.

  1. Are you in [name_u]America[/name_u]?
  2. What do you think the proper pronunciation of the name is?
  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you think most people normally pronounce the name?
  4. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you typically pronounce the name?
  5. What pronunciation do you think is the prettiest for each name?

Sorry, this is probably me being extra!
The ways I’ve seen them typically pronounced:
[name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]:
Oh-REL-ee (very… [name_u]French[/name_u])
OR-el-ee (Or like the word ā€˜or’)
AHR-el-ee

[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]:
A-vel-line
A-vel-leen

Thanks again!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I’m in the UK. I think the ā€œproperā€ pronunciations are the ones you’ve put but I’d pronounce them -
Aw - reh - lee
[name_m]Ah[/name_m] - veh - leen

This is how I would pronounce them (I’m American)

[name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]: Uh-RAIL-ee
[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]: A-vel-leen

Is ā€˜RAIL’ pronounced like the way it would be pronounced in ā€˜railing’ or is it like rayl?

More like rayl, although they are very similar to me.

  1. Yes!
  2. Oh-reh-lee and [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-Veh-[name_f]Leen[/name_f]
  3. Or-eh-lee and [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vel-eye-n
  4. I pronounce them the [name_u]French[/name_u] way
  5. I think the [name_u]French[/name_u] way is prettiest for both
  1. Yes
  2. Or-uh-lee & A-vuh-line
  3. Or-uh-lee & A-vel-een
  4. Or-ee-lee & [name_f]Ava[/name_f]-line
  5. Or-uh-lee & [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vel-line
  1. yes
[name_f]My[/name_f] best friend’s sisters’ middle name is [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f], and they pronounce it OR-a-lee. I think if I knew nothing about names I’d try to say aw-REH-lee or aw-REE-le.

[name_f]Aveline[/name_f] I would say AH-va-line, but I could also see AH-va-lin

  1. Are you in [name_u]America[/name_u]?
    No, im in the UK

  2. What do you think the proper pronunciation of the name is?

Or-ray-lee and [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-vuh-leen

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you think most people normally pronounce the name?
They may well pronounce it or-rel-ee or Av-uh-lin/line

  2. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you typically pronounce the name?
    Or-ray-lee or Av-uh-leen

  3. What pronunciation do you think is the prettiest for each name?
    The ones above

Uh-ray-lee and Av-uh-leen

I love both.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I’m not American, I’m from the UK. I have no idea what the correct pronunciations of those names are, but my instincts would be:
[name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]: OR-ell-ee
Avaline: AV-uh-line (like [name_f]Adaline[/name_f] with a V)

I think they both sound really pretty!

I would say [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] as oh-ral-ee where ral rhymes with ball

[name_f]Aveline[/name_f] would be av-uh-line where the a sounds like apple

I am in the US.

  1. Yes, I’m from the Midwest but I live in the south now (if you want more specific location)

  2. If we’re going by [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciations (since both of these names are [name_u]French[/name_u] or have origins in the [name_u]French[/name_u] language, as far as I know), my best guess would be:
    oh-reh-LEE
    ah-veh-LEEN

  3. When I first saw the name at age 14, I said [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] like the word ā€œorallyā€. I’ve always seen [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] as AH-veh-leen but I have a tendency to lean towards ā€œleenā€ pronunciations with the -line names I don’t recognize. I’ve had people try to convince me that the name is pronounced AY-va-line as well.

  4. [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] = uh-RAY-lee (first syllable is somewhere between ā€œuhā€ and ā€œurā€)
    [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] = AH-va-leen (the A is pronounced like ā€œappleā€)

  5. The answers I gave for #4.

1. I'm in an anglophone part of [name_f]Canada[/name_f]
2. The [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciations are correct, so oh-reh-LEE and ah-veh-LEEN
3. I think most people would pronounce the [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] the [name_u]French[/name_u] way, but I can see [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] being pronounced as either ah-veh-LINE or ah-veh-LIN
4. The ways I wrote in the answer for 2
5. The answers I gave for number 2 again, though I do like ah-veh-LIN

Southern US
I’d probably say AW-rel-ee and A-vel-leen with a like apple. I prefer [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. I don’t really like any of the pronouncations of [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] but I like both pronunciations of [name_f]Aveline[/name_f].

1. Are you in [name_u]America[/name_u]?

Yes.

2. What do you think the proper pronunciation of the name is?

[name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]: Oh-ruh-LEE or oh-ray-LEE

[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]: Av-uh-LEEN (like ā€œAvenue,ā€ but instead of -new, it’s -leen.)

3. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you think most people normally pronounce the name?

Like your suggestions, ā€œoh-REL-eeā€ and ā€œA-vel-leen.ā€

4. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you typically pronounce the name?

I don’t. I’ve never personally encountered either one.

5. What pronunciation do you think is the prettiest for each name?

Oh-ray-LEE & a-vel-leen.

Side note: If you have encountered people pronouncing AurĆ©lie like ā€œorally,ā€ then unfortunately, I would be very, very cautious of that name. AurĆ©lie is a beautiful name.

Aw-Re-lee
Av-eh-line

I’m in the US and I would guess that they would be pronounced OR-uh-lee and AV-uh-line. I think the Uh-RAY-lee pronunciation is much prettier for [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f], but it is not intuitive to me and would be hard for me to remember.

  1. Yes I live in [name_u]America[/name_u]
  2. I think he proper pronunciation for both is the [name_u]French[/name_u] way. [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]- Oh-ray-lee and [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] as Av-eh-leen.
  3. I think most people would pronounce [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] as Ar-ellie. I think most people would say Av-eh-lynn.
  4. [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]- [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-roar-[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is how I say it and I say [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] as Av-eh-leen.
  5. I think both pronounced the [name_u]French[/name_u] way is prettier. Oh-ray-lee and Av-eh-leen.

I am afraid some people would pronounce [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] as Orally. I know of a few babies named [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] and their names are [name_u]Avi[/name_u].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Pretty names you like!

  1. Are you in [name_u]America[/name_u]?
    No, I’m from the Netherlands!

  2. What do you think the proper pronunciation of the name is?
I would guess both names are [name_u]French[/name_u]…? And think the names are pronounced oh-ray-LEE and ah-veh-LEEN.

  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you think most people normally pronounce the name?
    OR-eh-lee and AY-ve-leen, I think.

  4. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you typically pronounce the name?
Oh-ray-LEE and ah-veh-LEEN (in the US, that is!)

  5. What pronunciation do you think is the prettiest for each name?
Same as no. 2 and 4.
