Pronunciation

Okay friends, this is a name I’ve been thinking about for a while but don’t know how I prefer it/could reasonably use it. The name is Viola, which seems reasonable enough, but after watching The Haunting of Bligh Manor, I’m in love with the VY-lah pronunciation. I don’t dislike VY-oh-lah, but I think I prefer the first. How do you say it? Could this work?

I definitely prefer vy-OL-uh and that’s the only pronunciation I’ve personally heard (other than vee-OL-uh, but only for the instrument). VY-lah doesn’t make much sense to me. Maybe you’d like it spelled Vyla?

I pronounce it vy-oh-la!

I can see what you’re saying, but to play devils advocate, I feel like this pronunciation makes as much sense as Violet?

[name_u]True[/name_u]!

I prefer and instinctively pronounce it Vy-oh-luh but Vy-luh is nice too

I would pronounce this spelling as Vy-o-la but I prefer the sound of VY-lah.

I think if I heard Vy-luh spelled [name_f]Viola[/name_f], I’d chalk it down to accent and wouldn’t be overly surprised. I’ve found my preferred pronunciation, Vee-OH-luh (like the instrument), a much harder sell than anything else .

i say it as VY-uh-luh, which is quite close to your preferred pronunciation - in fact, aloud, they sound very similar. in that context, i think it could work. however, it’s worth bearing in mind where you are; i’m reasonably sure most of the people around me would say viola the same as me, but most americans tend to stress the o more, which is further from your preference.

I’m Australian and I’ve honestly never seen the name in the wild so I couldn’t tell you how they would say it. I would assume they would be most familiar with it from [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_u]Davis[/name_u], though, so I assume they would go with her prn.

I’m also at work at the moment so I can’t play back your audio but I shall try to remember this afternoon

I say Ve-oh-la

But also lol I agree

[name_f]My[/name_f] instinct pronunciation is Vy-ola but I think people could learn the right pronunciation pretty quick

I do, too. Like the instrument.

[name_f]My[/name_f] instinct is to pronounce [name_f]Viola[/name_f] as “VEE-oh-la,” but I think pronouncing it as “VY-la” wouldn’t be impossible as I assume the most popular way [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers pronounce [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is “VY-let.”

I say Vy-OWH-lah

I say VEE-oh-lah but VY-oh-lah makes sense to me as well. I don’t think VY-lah works. With that pronouncation I would spell it differently, like Vyla.

Id say Vee-oh-la :joy: I think your pronunciation could work but it won’t be very common. Its super cute though!

I say VY-oh-luh, I would find VY-luh confusing but I guess it’d work!
