Question on cribs :)

I’m not expecting yet but I have been looking up baby gear lately. But I had a question for moms out there… where did you buy your crib for your baby? I have listened to a lot of different woman tell me about what not to buy in cribs, like no second hand cribs and no drop side cribs. I just feel so worried about the idea of purchasing a less than perfect crib :frowning:

I have read reviews on some cribs. They seemed nice. I’m not sure where I want to buy a crib from though. Is buying a crib from Walmart or Target okay?? Babies R Us seems to have nice cribs. What are your ladies thoughts? I know I’m not expecting, I just have so many questions on babies and their gear!

Thank you very much!

I am going to wait on finding out the sex first because if its a girl I really want the [name]Jenny[/name] [name]Lind[/name] crib! Pottery [name]Barn[/name] will be my second spot to go to buy a crib. I would buy a nice quality crib because of SIDS. Its okay to be second hand cribs, I think that’s where I’ll go to find a classic [name]Jenny[/name] [name]Lind[/name] crib and paint it yellow!

Walmart and Target cribs come from the same manufacturers as Babies=R-Us cribs, except the ones at Babies-R-Us are like $200-300 more. They are all the same unless you buy the super expensive kind made with fancy wood and [name]Earth[/name] friendly paint. I bought mine from Walmart, it was a pretty simple one that was on sale for $150. It’s been perfect for us and I definitely wouldn’t go back and spend more money on a different one, your child only sleeps in it for maybe 2 years and then you have to buy a toddler bed.

And the SIDS risk is more associated with crib bumpers and mattresses, and keeping toys or blankets in there with the baby. If you get a firm mattress and a breathable crib bumper and don’t let your baby have stuffed animals or blankets to sleep with, you will be fine. Getting a second hand crib is fine as long as it’s not a drop side and if you don’t mind a few bite marks!

The thing I’m worried about most is just a poorly made crib that could have potential strangling hazards or might break easy or such. But I didn’t know that… good to know! When it comes time to buy a crib then looking through walmart/target might end up being what I do. [name]Don[/name]'t want to pay more for the same thing. Ohhh PB has such cute things, I saw a mobile there that was the cutest thing I’d seen ever! I was also hoping to buy a convertible crib so it can be used as a toddler bed and possibly a big kids bed as well. I looked through a few of those and I did like them.

Mmm, SIDS really doesn’t have to do with the crib itself. As rowangreeneyes said, its what you put in the crib.

My mother was telling me second hand cribs are bad just because you don’t how much wear and tear its already received. If I were to get a second hand crib I’d be checking the reviews on the model of the crib to make sure it hasn’t been recalled for any reason and such. I do have enough income to buy a new crib though, enough at least to buy a new crib I think. Especially if its around the $200 dollar range.

Thanks berries!

Co-sleeping is the norm worldwide. There has never been a study done that proves it to be dangerous or cause SIDS; the only studies involving it actually point to it leading to less instances of SIDS for several reasons, the big one being that having the baby next to their mother helps them to go through the sleep cycle properly as their body learns how. Cribs weren’t invented until the 1800s. The to-do about co-sleeping being dangerous is behind crib manufacturers wanting to sell cribs and therefore skewing results to convince people to keep babies in cribs.

[name]Just[/name] thought I’d throw it out there, I’m glad I read about it before my daughter was born. We have a crib that never gets used lol. Whatever you decide, good luck and best wishes
