Recently I’ve been reading some Russian literature and have fallen in love with the name [name_f]Kira[/name_f]. I didn’t know until a few weeks ago that [name_f]Kira[/name_f] actually has a different root than [name_f]Kiera[/name_f]/[name_f]Keira[/name_f]/[name_f]Ciara[/name_f], which are Gaelic, while [name_f]Kira[/name_f] is Russian. However, here are some drawbakcs for me:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you immediately think [name_f]Kira[/name_f] is just a phonetic spelling of the Gaelic version?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you associate [name_f]Kira[/name_f] with the 80s and 90s, when it rose to popularity?
I’ve thought about using it as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. Does that work?
I don’t really think of [name_f]Kira[/name_f] as the phonetic spelling of the Gaelic name, and I do associate it with [name_f]Russia[/name_f]. However, I do have a strong association with [name_f]Kira[/name_f] and the 90s, although I think it still works today due to the popularity of similar-sounding names. I think it definitely works as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] due to the spelling, but not [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].
I associate [name_f]Keira[/name_f] with 80s 90s but not so much when it’s spelt as [name_f]Kira[/name_f] for some reason. I actually still like the name up to this date.
Sure, why not. I don’t think it matters when it comes to nicknames.
1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you immediately think [name_f]Kira[/name_f] is just a phonetic spelling of the Gaelic version?
No. I’m not aware of alternate spelling originating from other countries. Unless they’re super popular.
2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you associate [name_f]Kira[/name_f] with the 80s and 90s, when it rose to popularity?
No. I think it could work for a child today.
3. I’ve thought about using it as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. Does that work?
It wouldn’t be my first choice as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. If you like the name [name_f]Kira[/name_f], I think it could be a stand-alone name. I don’t understand the reasoning why people want to give their kids longer names, but end up just calling them the “nickname”.
