These are first and last names of side characters I came up with for NaNoWriMo. Please tell me if there’s anything wrong with them (like when I wasn’t aware that Pistorius is connected to [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Pistorius), or any other thoughts you have about them.

From what I know, nothing really seems wrong with any of them! Obviously Kopernicus reminds me of Copernic, Roxas reminds me of Kingdom Hearts and [name_m]Flemming[/name_m] reminds me of [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_m]Flemming[/name_m] but that was probably intentional.

I actually love them for a story, so if you’d be willing to share it one day I’d love to read it :smiley: Where did you find the inspiration for those?

I have absolutely no idea how to say Bartholomäa, and I don’t know if I’d take the time to sound out [name_m]Hieronymus[/name_m] in my head. It would depend on my mood.

Other than that, I don’t see an issue with them. I like that it’s a nice mix of uncommon names and common ones.

I’m not sure of [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] Yang. It’s a clash of cultures; but if he actually is of Italian/[name_f]Asian[/name_f] parentage, then okay

Found this pronunciation for Bartholomäa, \b(a)-rtholo-ma, bar-tho-loma. And [name_m]Hieronymus[/name_m] isn’t all that hard really. Here-ron-ne-mus.

With such inventive name, I’m curious to know what sort of novel this is!

Okay, but if it’s not an important character then I might not take time to make sure I’m pronouncing the name correctly. With no knowledge on the name, I would’ve said it [name_m]HY[/name_m]-ro-nih-mus anyways, like hieroglyphics.

On [name_u]Kyle[/name_u] [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], the main character in Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is named [name_u]Kyle[/name_u] [name_u]Keeley[/name_u], but that’s middle grade fiction, and I don’t know if that’ll be a major issue for you.

@southernpeach Good thing that I asked. It is middle grade/young adult what I’m writing, so maybe I’ll change that.

@netamarie Most of them are clashes of cultures, because they’re wizards with close to no contact to the real world. So I chose lastnames from many cultures and firstnames from mostly latin, greek, sumerian etc.

@sparkleninja It’s bar-toh-loh-MEH-uh, but she’s looks it up the librarian so probably just referred to as “Mrs Lugal”. Many of them, for that matter, are only going to be called by their lastnames.

@kahili regarding inspiration, the lastnames are common latsnames from around the world, fancy words translated into ancient languages, and sometimes famous people from the past. The firsts are mostly nameberry suggestions :smiley:
