Quirky names from your family tree?

Compared to some of the names above, these aren’t quite as quirky, but growing up I always found them strange - especially since I haven’t ever seen them anywhere else:

My Aunty is [name]Christine[/name] [name]Bain[/name], and my Uncle is [name]Brent[/name] [name]Cadman[/name].

All four of my and my husbands grandfathers have odd names- [name]Leroy[/name] , [name]Milford[/name], Ruble, and [name]Archibald[/name] [name]Clancy[/name] (insisted his whole life it was two first). There’s also [name]Casper[/name], [name]Baxter[/name], and [name]Reinhold[/name]. Gotta love the names that old mountain people choose!

[name]Mattie[/name] [name]Del[/name]
[name]Gussie[/name]
[name]Clarence[/name]
[name]Roy[/name]
[name]Gladys[/name]

[name]Donald[/name] (goes by [name]Don[/name])
Tonet
Glendean (woman)
[name]Lowell[/name] (father, brother and grandfather, middle name [name]Venice[/name])

[name]Carlin[/name], Fridolin, [name]Leander[/name], [name]Nestor[/name], [name]Ruedi[/name], Zopher

Ameda, [name]Appolonia[/name], [name]Aveline[/name], [name]Gay[/name], [name]Selma[/name], [name]Sybil[/name], Wilmot

My mom’s name is Trinett, which would be pretty if people could actually pronounce it correctly! It’s trin, like in [name]Trinity[/name]. It kills me when people say try-net! There’s also:

[name]Clarence[/name]
[name]Cassiopia[/name]
[name]Erica[/name] (pronounced with emphasis on the ick part - why would anybody do that?)
[name]Gay[/name] (their middle names rhymed - [name]Kay[/name], [name]Ray[/name], [name]Fay[/name] - and the last one got stuck with [name]Gay[/name])
[name]Reign[/name] (yes, like horse reigns)
[name]Alonzo[/name]

The only ones I can remember offhand are [name]Joris[/name] (m), [name]Orchid[/name] and [name]Eulalia[/name].

My great-grandfather’s brother’s name was Fountain; he was probably born around 1890. I always thought it was a really cool name growing up, but he led such an interesting life – pilot, photographer, New [name]Deal[/name] administrator – that that probably played into it. My great-grandfather’s name was [name]Frank[/name] and he named his only daughter [name]Frankie[/name], which I love, but my cousin got it first…

alma, verna, unto, jalmari, ilmari, haarl, yvon, olga, ethel. some are really interesting

alma, verna, unto, jalmari, ilmari, haarl, yvon, olga, ethel. some are really interesting

There’s a woman who is somehow related to me, although I’m not quite sure how, named Ethylene. She’s very, very old, but still living. My parents always say it sounds like some kind of fuel.

One of my great (insert number) aunts was called [name]Amy[/name], which was a nn for [name]America[/name].

I believe there was also a woman named [name]Primavera[/name].

I love [name]Artemisia[/name]! I don’t think I would be bold enough to use it as a first name but I wouldn’t mind sneaking it into the middle, as a tribute to my inner art student…

I’ve got:

m: [name]Umberto[/name], [name]Luigi[/name], [name]Domenico[/name], Seraphino
f: [name]Assunta[/name], [name]Eugenia[/name], [name]Galina[/name], [name]Melania[/name] (not all that strange)

but this one is the best: [name]Santa[/name] Cocco

It is sort of crazy but when I was a kid, just about everyone in my family before me had a kooky name you just never thought you’d see again, but now I look at the lists and they are all suggested and some of them super-popular. Except for one cousin, we all have very common names for our ages. [name]Just[/name] about anyone up the rest of the tree branches, excepting my mom, and anyone who might have gotten hit with the name [name]Robert[/name] (a bunch) have names I would call strange if I didn’t know otherwise. I had this great-aunt named [name]Bertie[/name] for [name]Roberta[/name], even, but until recently, I thought her name was really [name]Birdie[/name]. So it only sort of counts.

That was the name of [name]Anjelica[/name] [name]Huston[/name]'s character in the [name]Royal[/name] Tenenbaums. I love that movie, so your relative gets mad props from me.

I have some that I consider more weird than others but I have…

I will post more later.

Most of the names in my family are fairly normal, classic names, but there are a few odd ones that pop up here and there.

My grandfather’s name was [name]Gerson[/name] (nicknamed Guggy) and his sister was named [name]Pearl[/name] (my middle name). My grandfather was a great lover of poetry and literature, so he named one of his daughters [name]Rosamund[/name] (possibly of “Middlemarch”). On my dad’s side we have a [name]Brina[/name] and a [name]Vladimir[/name] (nicknamed [name]Wolf[/name]). I also had a great grandfather [name]Barney[/name].

I also have some Israeli cousins with quirky names like [name]Gidon[/name], [name]Rochelle[/name], Yoav, and [name]Ayla[/name]
