Rafferty and Quentin

Hello berries!

I have a few questions for these two names. I rarely start threads because I’m usually pretty confident with my name choices, but these two have thrown me for a loop.

1.) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]? I’ve always pronounced it with a short ‘a’ sound, but when researching it I found that some people say ‘[name_u]Ray[/name_u]-fer-tee’.

2.) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce the nickname [name_u]Rafe[/name_u]? In my head I automatically say “[name_m]Raffy[/name_m]” with a short ‘a’ sound, but I think that’s because I know a [name_m]Rafael[/name_m] who goes by [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] and pronounces it like this. I think most would say ‘Rayf’.

3.) Which nickname do you prefer - [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] or [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] (rayf)?

4.) What’s the best way to spell [name_m]Quentin[/name_m]? I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m], but I’ve been considering [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] as well.

5.) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think these two names would sound okay as brothers or are they too different?

I love both these names and think they are great together. I say [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] with a short a (as in giraffe). I’m torn on the nickname, because I’ve only known one [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] who pronounced his name RAH-fee. I guess with the pronunciation you’re going for, I like [name_m]Raffy[/name_m]?

As for [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] vs [name_m]Quinton[/name_m], I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m]. But I also say them slightly differently…

RAH-fee is what I was going for, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to type it out and [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] was the closest thing to come to mind. Thanks for the reply!

With rafferty I pronounce it with a short a, I think it would depend on where you live. Nicknames though, I always pronounce rafe, 'rayf ’ and so would people local to me. With rafferty pronounced with a short a I prefer raff or raffy as a nn, I see rafe as a different name. For me quentin and quinton are different names and sound distinctive, I prefer quinton and love quin as a nn but quentin is a good name too.

Thanks for your reply! I struggle with [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] and [name_m]Quinton[/name_m]. I pronounce them differently as well (or at least try too), but it’s hard for me to hear the difference if I don’t know which one you’re talking about beforehand. I hope that made sense. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s they way people local to me talk.

I pronounce [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] and [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] the same way that you do. I prefer the nickname [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] to Rayf, but I like just [name_m]Raff[/name_m] even better. I agree with the previous poster that [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] and [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] are two different names that are pronounced differently. Personally I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m].

Thanks! I was looking at another name site and everyone said they pronounced [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] as rayf. I thought I was alone.

1.) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]?
I pronounce this like [name_m]Raff[/name_m]-er-ty. I have never heard the pronounciation of [name_u]Ray[/name_u]-fer-ty, but suspect it’s mostly dialect?

2.) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce the nickname [name_u]Rafe[/name_u]?
I actually know someone with this name and he pronounces it Rah-fee, so that’s how I’ve always assumed it’s pronounced. It is a nickname for [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], though, so I think that plays into it. If you were using it for a nickname for [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], then [name_m]Raff[/name_m]-fy would work, too.

3.) Which nickname do you prefer - [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] or [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] (rayf)?
Honestly, with me, nicknames should be organic. I don’t like trying to assign a nickname to a baby ahead of time. However, I think I like [name_u]Rafe[/name_u]…but only the way I know of it to be pronounced. [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] and [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] (rayf) I’m kind of indifferent about.

4.) What’s the best way to spell [name_m]Quentin[/name_m]? I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m], but I’ve been considering [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] as well.
I think [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] kind of makes it appear as if it’s pronounced [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]-ton, but to me, [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] is Kwen-tin. I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] over [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] by a mile.

5.) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think these two names would sound okay as brothers or are they too different?
I think, as brothers, [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] and [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] are such an awesome set! They have the same feel to me. I love them together!

  • I pronounce [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] just as it’s spelled, ‘raff-er-tee’
  • [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] is ‘rayf’
  • I prefer [name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
  • They sound fine for brothers

For that pronunciation, the spelling is [name_m]Rafi[/name_m]. [name_m]Rafi[/name_m] is a standalone Arabic name but it’s also used as a nn. I know a [name_m]Rafiq[/name_m] ‘rah-feek’ who goes by [name_m]Rafi[/name_m]
