I have a daughter ([name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], nn [name_f]Evy[/name_f]) and am expecting a baby boy. Our top name is [name_m]Gavin[/name_m], but we also like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_u]Reid[/name_u]/[name_u]Reed[/name_u].
Here’s the issue: We had a stillborn son early last year who we named [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] because of its ‘noble fighter’ meaning. He had a severe heart defect, but he hung on with us through several months of experimental treatment until the demands of his growing body were just too much for his little heart. He passed away in utero at 33 weeks.
Since our 3rd child is also a boy, it’s important to us that we choose a name for him just because we like it - not because it has special meaning. We don’t want this baby’s identity to be based on the loss that came before him. But lately, we’ve begun to realize just how close in sound [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] is to [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. I worry about calling out the wrong name, like tired parents often do. Our living children will grow up knowing about [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and his place in our family, but I don’t want there to be any overshadowing of his loss over our love for [name_f]Evy[/name_f] and our 3rd baby. I hope I’m explaining myself well - I know these are sensitive topics!
So, [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] sounds similar to [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] also sounds similar to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] sounds similar to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. I guess we like what we like! But [name_u]Reid[/name_u]/[name_u]Reed[/name_u] is pretty far in 3rd place. It’s intriguing but we don’t love it.
