What do you think? Too trendy/yoo-neek?
Definitely. I popped some of the sounds in [name]Raleigh[/name] into Behind the Name and of the results, how about:
[name]Astraea[/name]
[name]Rae[/name] [name]Leonora[/name] (you could get [name]Raleigh[/name] as a nickname this way if you desperately wanted it, but with other nickname options)
[name]Fae[/name]
[name]Leila[/name]
[name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Amaya[/name]
[name]Adalia[/name]
[name]Calista[/name]
[name]Magdalena[/name]
[name]Talulla[/name]
[name]Valentina[/name]
Not sure if you know or not but it is Raw-lee, not [name]Ray[/name]-lee. [name]Just[/name] from the way you suggested [name]Rae[/name] [name]Leonora[/name]. Thanks, though.
I’ve loved the name since I was little. It’s not at all trendy, it’s a place name
There was this TV show, late 80s, called [name]Amen[/name] with an old man named [name]Rolly[/name] pronounced the same as [name]Raleigh[/name]. Because of that my mom dislikes thinks it’s for boys. It’s unisex but I prefer it for girls
I dislike it immensely. [name]Even[/name] if it IS a place name, I still find the spelling to be overly trendy and the sound unappealing and masculine.
It’s in a tough spot now because although it’s a place name, it fits in so well with all the trendy/yooneek names that it may be mistaken for one and also mispronounced. Is [name]Riley[/name] an alternative? Or do you like the [name]Raleigh[/name] pronunciation? (It’s regional, I know, but whenever I hear [name]Raleigh[/name] I think someone may be saying [name]Riley[/name] with a southern accent.)
Oh heck, [name]Raleigh[/name] is a bike company here, pronounced like Rally. You could still get [name]Raleigh[/name] at a stretch from the [name]Nora[/name] sound, maybe? There’s also [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Aurelia[/name] (I think this would work beautifully), [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Audrey[/name], [name]Claudia[/name] perhaps?
I don’t like it at all
Where I grew up there was a “[name]Rolly[/name] Trolley” (dont ask, all the trollies that went around town had names, haha). So I’m afraid every time I hear [name]Raleigh[/name] I think [name]Rolly[/name] Trolley.
Yes it’s a place name so I dont classify it as yoo-neek, but I dont like the sound, if it had to be a name, I’d think it was masculine despite the -leigh ending.
I like [name]Raleigh[/name]. I think it’s a pretty sound. And it’s not an unique spelling - it’s a place name!
I’ve only heard [name]Raleigh[/name] as a boy’s name. I can’t see it on a girl. So yes, on a girl I would consider it trendy since it fits into both the -leigh ending and boys names on girls trends.
I agree with @pansy - I can only see it as a boys name. I think of Sir [name]Walter[/name] [name]Raleigh[/name] (and subsequently the Beatles line in ‘I’m so tired’ - “Sir [name]Walter[/name] [name]Raleigh[/name], he was such a stupid git” - for bringing tobacco from the New World).
