My grandpas name was [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], but I’m really crushing on [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] at the moment. I feel like if it’s too boyish, he could shorten to “[name_m]Ralph[/name_m]” as an adult if he wanted.
Could work? I think [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] would be a safer bet though… gives more options, and [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] doesn’t feel like an established enough nickname to be considered ‘serious’ as a stand-alone first, in the way that [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] does, for example.
I think it would be better to name him [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] and call him [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though he could shorten it in adulthood, it would still be on all of his legal forms and I do think it’s too immature to use into adulthood.
Thanks for the replies so far! We definitely prefer [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] over [name_m]Ralph[/name_m].
Is [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] really too much of a nickname to put on a Birth Certificate with all of the nicknames as first names used today? I thought maybe it would be fun & refreshing to see “[name_m]Ralphie[/name_m]” used! Middle name will possibly be [name_u]Jay[/name_u] like dad. So [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u].
^this. I’d definitely use [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] as the given name. And I find [name_m]Ralph[/name_m]/[name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] very refreshing; I wish I heard it used more often for little kids.
I love [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m]! [name_m]How[/name_m] could you not after watching A [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] [name_u]Story[/name_u]. I prefer it over [name_m]Ralph[/name_m]. I say name him what he will be called!
I think having [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] as the full name is fine. I prefer [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] to [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], actually! If you do want a different first name for [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m], what about:
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_u]Rafe[/name_u]
[name_f]Rafa[/name_f]
[name_m]Rudolph[/name_m]
[name_m]Randolph[/name_m]
Rodolphus
[name_f]Seraphin[/name_f]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
PS: You may want to pair some of those with an “L” middle name to add for the “l” in [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] (i.e. [name_f]Rafa[/name_f] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] “[name_m]Ralphie[/name_m]”), but that depends on whether you think they work or not without it.
I think [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] is super cute! My uncles name is [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], but he goes exclusively by [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] so I can definitely imagine an adult with the name.
and I agree about A [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] [name_u]Story[/name_u], it’s what makes me love the name!
I think [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] can be used on its own, especially with so many other nickname names becoming so popular.
adorable on a child, and handsome on an adult!
don’t shorten [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] to [name_m]Ralph[/name_m]. Use [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] with [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] as a nn, [name_m]Ralphie[/name_m] is immature. He will not thankyou for it in middle school. [name_m]Roll[/name_m] call would not be fun for him. And Ralphie will still be on all his documents and legal stuff. Finding a job ect. will also be awkward.
