Ramona or Josephine and Nickname concerns

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,

My top two for baby girl are [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I love both full names but there are some nicknames I don’t love. For [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], I love [name_f]Romi[/name_f], [name_f]Ro[/name_f], [name_u]Rae[/name_u] but I don’t love [name_f]Mona[/name_f] or [name_m]Rami[/name_m]. For [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] I love [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_u]Joey[/name_u] but not a big fan of [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. My question is- which name do you prefer and do you think the nicknames I don’t love, [name_f]Mona[/name_f] and [name_u]Josie[/name_u] are unavoidable if I go with either? If you don’t like either name could you say why! Thanks so much!!

I love [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] and like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I don’t think any of the nicknames you prefer for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] are the most intuitive, but I think they work. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_m]Ra[/name_m]/Rah? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] as a way to get to [name_f]Romi[/name_f]/[name_f]Ro[/name_f]? [name_u]Jo[/name_u]/[name_u]Joey[/name_u] are great for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. All of the little Josephines I know go by [name_u]Josie[/name_u], except one, who recently switched to [name_u]Jo[/name_u], and it suits her so well. Other possible nicknames you might hear for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]: [name_f]Posie[/name_f]/[name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_m]Phinny[/name_m]/Finny. By the way, I think “[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ‘Surname’” works well too and [name_f]Romi[/name_f]-[name_u]Jo[/name_u] is pretty cute.

I think [name_f]Mona[/name_f] is more avoidable than [name_u]Josie[/name_u], honestly - [name_u]Romy[/name_u]/[name_f]Romi[/name_f] feels like a natural nickname for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]!

Thank you!!!

I like [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] - [name_f]Romi[/name_f] and [name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]- [name_u]Josie[/name_u]

I think nicknames can be unavoidable, growing up my parents called me [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] and Gabes. At high school all my friends started calling me Gabs (like abs- irrelevant)and that’s stuck through to adulthood.
So I think if there’s a possible nn you really don’t like, maybe don’t use the name. Otherwise you’re just choosing the nn for you to use.

I prefer [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I love [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and I see no reason why you would end up with [name_u]Josie[/name_u] if you discouraged it. I would think of [name_u]Jo[/name_u] as the default nickname for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I love the name for its own sake because it sounds strong and grounded and because I loved [name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u] from [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women.

I don’t care for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] because I simply can’t get past [name_f]Beverly[/name_f] [name_m]Cleary[/name_m]'s [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_m]Quimby[/name_m]. I loved the books, but would not want my name to be associated with the “strong-willed” little sister.

I agree with this completely! I would also suggest [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], as a way to combine the two and avoid [name_u]Josie[/name_u] and [name_f]Mona[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], it’s one of my favorites. I don’t like the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] either I prefer [name_f]Posy[/name_f] or [name_f]Effy[/name_f]. I think the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is avoidable.

I’m not a huge fan of the name [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. I don’t love the “moan” sound. [name_f]Romi[/name_f] and [name_f]Ro[/name_f] are adorable nicknames tho.

I think most people would use the nn that they hear you using. And if you do get anyone that uses [name_f]Mona[/name_f] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] just let them know you prefer so and so nn instead.

Btw that’s worked out fine for us. I hate the nn [name_m]Al[/name_m] and most people hear us calling our son [name_u]Ali[/name_u] and they do as well. Only my brother in law has called him [name_m]Al[/name_m], and I politely let him know which nns we prefer.

I like both names. My daughter is named [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], and while I don’t mind [name_f]Mona[/name_f], we don’t call her by that and literally no one else has tried to. We call our [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_u]Mo[/name_u] sometimes. It wasn’t a pre-planned nickname, but it absolutely fits her.

Why not?

I like both but love [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]!! I don’t think [name_f]Mona[/name_f] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] are unavoidable nicknames. In fact, I think they could be easily avoided. And I will say sometimes you’ll be surprised by what nicknames you grow to like. My daughter is [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. I thought if we used a nickname it’d be [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I didn’t like [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] never fit her. At a year and a half she started referring to herself as [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. I now think it’s pretty much the sweetest nickname ever. Because it’s her!
Good luck.

No offense intended! I didn’t love the character, but I am sure that meeting a charming little [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] would be all I would need to get over that association.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] are delightfully spunky with vintage charm. My personal preference would be [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because, among the general public, [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]'s name image may be more ethnic than vintage (vintage is my ideal name image).

None taken! The question was more in reference to the “strong-willed” thing, but now that I think about it, I realize that you may have meant that the character was more of a brat, maybe, than one you actually considered “strong-willed”. Which, while I liked the character, would be a fair point.

I prefer [name_f]Ramona[/name_f].

[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] all the way.

I prefer [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Romi[/name_f]/[name_u]Romy[/name_u] are the most natural nns for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. I think you can control nns to a certain extent - when people call me by a nn I don’t use I just correct them. When you announce the name you can say “[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] or [name_u]Romy[/name_u] for short”. I also love [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_u]Joey[/name_u], and I don’t mind [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] with those nns. Not a fan of [name_u]Josie[/name_u] myself so wouldn’t hesitate to correct someone who used it.

I am also considering [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] but can’t really fully get on board with it. I love the full name, but I can’t picture calling my child any of the nicknames accept [name_f]Posey[/name_f] or, more likely, [name_u]Poe[/name_u]. [name_f]Posey[/name_f] is so much girlier than my usual taste, though, and given my son’s obsession with Kung Fu Panda ([name_u]Po[/name_u]) and my husband’s love of [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars ([name_u]Poe[/name_u] Dameron), I’m not sure whether that nickname would stick like glue or be too incongruous. So [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] might be relegated to a middle name because I’m not the type to correct other people’s nicknames for my kid–mostly because I feel like it’s an uphill battle that’s not worth fighting.

For [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], I only know one, go goes by [name_f]Mona[/name_f]. I didn’t even realize her full name was [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] until I saw it on paper once. That said, if I saw [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] on paper, I don’t think I’d assume her nickname was [name_f]Mona[/name_f].

All the Josephines I know have gotten [name_u]Josie[/name_u], but the [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] I know has always gone by her full name and nobody’s tried to shorten it to [name_f]Mona[/name_f]

Actually, that’s exactly what I was thinking!
