Ramsay?

Hello, berries!

DH and I are expecting our second son in a few months (Our first son is named [name_u]Teagan[/name_u]). And we were quite set on a name: [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m], and old family name.

However, we asked around a bit outside of our family and we got a lot of negative reactions to it. Some say it sounds too old, some mention [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] and some mention Game of Thrones (which we don’t watch).

We are working out our new found doubts of the name and we would really appreciate your opinions to help us.

So, what are your thoughts on [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m]? Any negative associations/references you know of?

I watch Game of Thrones and I understand the negative connotation but I nevertheless love the name [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m]. I say if you like use it, I wouldn’t worry about what people (especially those outside your family) think. It’s your child and you have to love yelling for [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] to come downstairs for the rest of your life, not them.

I think it would be a nice, unexpected choice for a baby boy. I do very vaguely associate it with GoT (the character in question is a terror, by the way), but I think once the hype for the show dies out, so will the association. More than anything else, I relate it to [name_m]Ramses[/name_m], an Egyptian name that belonged to a handful of pharaohs.

If you and your partner like the name and have a positive opinion of it, that’s what matters the most. You might encounter a few comments about it, but over time the people who know you will get used to the baby name, and it won’t be a big deal anymore.

[name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] is gorgeous, it’s on my own list

It make a wonderful dignified choice in my opinion, and the y ending makes it still cute and appropriate for a little boy

Please go for it!

I, like a pp mentioned, think of Rameses of [name_u]Egypt[/name_u]. It’s a fine name, though.

[name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] is an awesome name and goes with [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] very well.

I think [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] is a very handsome name for a boy, but I do think of the GOT character. However if you don’t watch it, I don’t think it should be any problem. It’s been around long enough before GOT, and will be long after, I’m sure.

No!
While I love [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] and [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] would be a good name too, the Game of Thrones character has totally ruined it imo. [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] is not a minor character or one who has made a few bad choices. He’s a torturer and murderer, among other things and even if you don’t watch the series, a lot of people do. For example, 8 in 10 teachers at my school do (we made a survey). You don’t want your kid to be forever connected to the character. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though when your kid is 10 the series will have finished, has anybody forgotten Lost? And GoT’s books will continue to be read for decades.
If that won’t bother you or you’re sure your kid won’t mind, then go ahead, but I advice you against it.

I love [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m]! Please disregard Game of Thrones.

Thanks for the comments, everyone

I actually started watching game of thrones a couple of days ago and I have not met [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] yet. So I can’t help you with that.

But I do really love how handsome the name is, and I don’t think a GoT character is a total deal-breaker. It’s a name with significance to you as well, so I’d say go for it

This is an option me and OH like if our first is a boy. It’s linked to a lot of things we like (a footballer he likes, a musician I like, and of course, famous [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] street from Neighbours. Not to mention its Scottish which matches is mothers roots.) For these reasons we love the name (though spelt [name_m]Ramsey[/name_m]). I wouldnt worry about [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] (lots of people have the surname) and Game of Thrones is irrelevent, if you love it and it has meaning to you, then go for it!

Not a fan regardless of the got character

I like Ramesy spelling better. [name_m]Ram[/name_m]-say is how I would pronounce [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m]. [name_m]RAM[/name_m]-see is gown I would pronounce Ramesy.

I do like the name and toyed with it personally for awhile. Decided against it because it’s the last name of a person I know.

I associate it with [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Ramsey[/name_m] because of the incredibly weird coincidence that at the exact moment I read his name in your post, the presenter in the TV show I’m watching in another tab said his name. It was uncanny.

As an association, however, I don’t think it’s a bad one. From what I’ve seen, although [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] is known for yelling at adults on his shows, he’s actually incredibly kind and supportive to the children. He’s a bit of a sweetheart when it comes to kids!

I don’t watch GOT so all I think about when I see [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] is how handsome it looks with [name_u]Teagan[/name_u], and how nice it is to use a family name!
