Temptation got the best of us and we couldn’t resist finding out the gender at our scan yesterday. We’re having a girl! We’ve chopped down our list as it was ridiculously long into a still long but more realistic one lol.

I want to something quite traditional where as my partner likes more modern, quirky names. We’re aiming for my style of first name with a fun nickname. We’ll choose a middle name for her from my partner’s list to accommodate both our styles then use Quinn (my surname) as a second middle name.

Amelie with the nickname Ami
Aria with the nickname Ari
Aurora with the nickname Rory
Eleanor with the nickname Noor
Eloise with the nickname Lou or Louie
Evelyn with the nickname Ever (although I’m not 100% sure with Quinn as second middle?)
Freya with the nickname Rey
Hazel with the nickname Zel
Matilda with the nickname Mattie
Viola with the nickname Vi or Ola

How would you rate the names? Either just from preference and/or from our compromise to suit both our styles.

Based on your preference to suit both of your styles, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] with the nn. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] with the nn. [name_u]Mattie[/name_u].

There are lots of beautiful names on your list! Other names I liked particularly are [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] but I just wasn’t sold on their nicknames for something modern/quirky for your partner.

Best wishes

Yeah, there are some nicknames he likes more than others but he’s being really good about the first name. I think it’s because I’m letting him go wild for her middle name. We have options like [name_f]Otter[/name_f], [name_u]Sparrow[/name_u], [name_u]Nightingale[/name_u], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_f]Poem[/name_f], [name_u]Poet[/name_u], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Dove[/name_u], etc on the middle name list which I’d never in a million years thought to use as names lol. This site has honestly been such a blessing! We’ve gone through so many lists and threads made on here and found stuff we both love to combine.

Matilda, [name_f]Aria[/name_f], or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].

Yay congratulations! I like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/Louie. It should pair nicely with a quirky, modern middle name.

I would definitely go with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn “[name_u]Louie[/name_u],” [name_f]Freya[/name_f] nn “[name_u]Rey[/name_u],” or [name_f]Viola[/name_f] nn “[name_f]Vi[/name_f]”

Amelie with the nickname [name_u]Ami[/name_u] - 5/10 - love the nickname, indifferent about the name

Aria with the nickname [name_u]Ari[/name_u] - 7/10 - I like [name_f]Aria[/name_f], but I’m not super into nicknames that sound like you just took one letter off the name. I prefer nicknames that are a little harder to get to.

Aurora with the nickname [name_u]Rory[/name_u] - 7/10 - don’t love [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but it’s the only nickname you can get from [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] besides [name_f]Ora[/name_f] and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] which I don’t love either.

Eleanor with the nickname [name_f]Noor[/name_f] - 5/10 - would prefer the nickname [name_m]Lay[/name_m], [name_f]Lea[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], or even [name_u]Norie[/name_u].

Eloise with the nickname [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_u]Louie[/name_u] - 9/10 - LOVE the feminine names with the gender neutral nicknames.

Evelyn with the nickname [name_u]Ever[/name_u] (although I’m not 100% sure with [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as second middle?) - 8/10 - love how you can get to the nickname [name_u]Ever[/name_u] without [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f].

Freya with the nickname [name_u]Rey[/name_u] - 10/10 - see [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]

Hazel with the nickname [name_m]Zel[/name_m] - 8/10 - love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], don’t love “[name_m]Zel[/name_m]”

Matilda with the nickname [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] - 6/10 - love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] but mostly for the nickname [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]

Viola with the nickname [name_f]Vi[/name_f] or [name_m]Ola[/name_m] - 9/10 - with the nickname [name_f]Vi[/name_f]. Not [name_m]Ola[/name_m].

You have such a beautiful list!!! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites for you are [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]!

Thank you! It’s typical as we had a clear favourite for a boys name haha.

Ooh, I like [name_u]Norie[/name_u] as a nickname to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Thank you.

I always love reading your topics!

My favorites from your list are [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and HAzel!

Amelie feels a bit bland to me, and she will perpetually be dealing with being called [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and other pronunciation difficulities. [name_f]Aria[/name_f], on the other hand, feels too trendy! [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is both trendy and just does not appeal to me, sound-wise, and I can’t bring myself to like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is really nice but not quite up there with my favorites from your list.

Aurora is so grand and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is such a cute nickname, and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] can fit anywhere and [name_f]Noor[/name_f] is also a lovely nickname. I love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] but don’t love the nicknames [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_u]Louie[/name_u]. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is a good compromise between styles- it’s classic but widely used today. I’ve definitely been crushing on [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and it has the quirkiness that your partner likes while not being too trendy, which is in line with you! [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is the same deal as [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]- well, not as classic but it definitely doesn’t feel modern, yet it is relatively popular.

Mattie is an adorable nickname!
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is quite pretty.
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] is so spunky, though I don’t care for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].
[name_u]Ever[/name_u] is beautiful.
I prefer your nicknames.

Thank you!

I initially brought up [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and bland is exactly how my other half described it lol. I think it’s the popularity so [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] seemed like a good in between. I didn’t think of it being mistaken for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] anyway though. It’s definitely something to think about.

Evelyn in theory is perfect for us because it’s an older name yet has modern qualities. I actually quite like [name_u]Ever[/name_u] as a nickname too plus there’s the more common [name_f]Eve[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] to fall back on. It doesn’t seem to fit though. Strange! [name_u]Everly[/name_u] is a step too far into modern for me and I think [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] would probably be too frilly for my other half. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] is possibly a stretch for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] too.

[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Ami[/name_u]’ gets my vote - that’s my daughter’s name and sometimes nickname  I also adore [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], both of which were high on our list for our daughter. Really, all of your options are lovely - I LOVE the nickname [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and Eleanor nickname Nell is one of my favourites - but either [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are my top choices for you.

Edit: we don’t experience too much in the way of pronunciation issues with Amelie. Occasionally we have to correct people but it isn’t really an issue. And it’s only been mistaken for Amelia once in her 14 months.

I wish I had a cool maiden name to use haha

Hi there.

Here are my favorites on your list:

Amelie nn [name_u]Ami[/name_u]-I really like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. It’s cheerful yet elegant & slightly exotic. [name_u]Ami[/name_u] is a nice nn. I like how it means ‘friend’ in [name_u]French[/name_u], right?

Aria nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u]-[name_f]Aria[/name_f] is just kind of over done. And it bugs me how it got so trendy so quickly because of a TV show character. Plus, I love [name_u]Ari[/name_u] for a boy.

Aurora nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u]-I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a girl, but I think it’s okay as a nn for the feminine [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is bold & elegant. I like the nature imagery too. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] & [name_u]Rory[/name_u] are a little bit hard to say, but maybe that’s just me.

Eleanor nn [name_f]Noor[/name_f]-I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. It’s the perfect balance of vintage beauty & feminine charm. It’s smart & adventurous. I don’t really think that [name_f]Noor[/name_f] sounds that pretty though. I love the nns [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

Eloise nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_u]Louie[/name_u]-[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is darling. It’s spunky & a little bookish. But very pretty & pleasant sounding. I like [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], but [name_u]Louie[/name_u] is kind of masculine in my opinion.

Evelyn nn [name_u]Ever[/name_u]-[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is super duper popular. I come across so many Evelyns/Evies. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] is different, but I don’t personally love it for a name.

Freya nn [name_u]Rey[/name_u]-[name_f]Freya[/name_f] is sweet. Smart, soft yet has substance. It’s simple but not terribly over done at all. I don’t mind [name_u]Rey[/name_u], but it seems a bit of a stretch here.

Hazel-I find [name_m]Zel[/name_m] a bit of a stretch too, but it’s kind of cool. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a nice classic. Quite popular though.

Matilda nn [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]-[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is kind of fun & quirky. I prefer the nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

Viola nn [name_f]Vi[/name_f] or [name_m]Ola[/name_m]-It’s different, but just a little too dusty. And I like old lady names too. [name_m]Just[/name_m] can’t get into this one.

Hope this helps.

That’s so great to hear! It’s such a pretty name and I’ve never met an [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] before.
