Re-imagine your name

I’ve been going through genealogical websites (ancestry, familysearch and the like…I’m not doing genealogical research I’m just there for the names °-°) and I noticed how fluid names used to be not too long ago. People sometimes legally went by multiple different versions of their given name. Which got me thinking what if this became a thing again, what versions of my name would I use

If you had to use your own name as the starting point, and feel free to use your nameberry name or one of your oc’s names too, which versions would you go by? You can use different variants, diminutives, similar sounding names, translate your name, use the meaning, lengthen it, shorten it. Be creative I’ve seen some really stretchy names, but there’s probably no need to tell Berrys that

Prompts

What would you choose as…

  • a version of your name that becomes your new legal name from now on?
  • a neutral version of your name?
  • a masculine/feminine version of your name?
  • a version of your name in a different language?
  • a obscure version of your name?
  • a cottagecore inspired version of your name?
  • a dark academia inspired version of your name?
  • a royalcore inspired version of your name?

You probably already know this but behindthename let’s you search for names with similar sounds and meanings and shows you different versions of a name. Here’s also a list of diminutive suffixes you could play around with, be creative.

There aren’t many for my name, except [name_f]Di[/name_f], which my husband’s family call me, or [name_f]Diane[/name_f], which makes me grimace. So, I guess I would still go by [name_f]Diana[/name_f]. However, if I had to, I’d rather be called [name_f]Anna[/name_f] than [name_f]Di[/name_f]. But I’ve learnt to live with the nn [name_f]Di[/name_f], as my ex-husband and his family used to call me that too, plus there was [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Di[/name_f], so I think at least it has a good association and history. Still prefer to be called [name_f]Diana[/name_f], though, which, most people do.

Using [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] for this

a version of your name that becomes your new legal name from now on?
I’d make this my legal name lol
a neutral version of your name?
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] is already neutral, so I suppose I’d go with [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]
a masculine/feminine version of your name?
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_u]Finnegan[/name_u]
a version of your name in a different language?
Both of my names have very popular meanings, so it was easy to translate them to other languages! I would go with [name_m]Salah[/name_m] [name_m]Zinedine[/name_m] (Arabic - the name [name_m]Salah[/name_m] means “peace through faith” which is actually a really cool blend of the meanings of both my names) or [name_u]Axel[/name_u] [name_m]Trig[/name_m] (Scandinavian) or Reizo [name_m]Tadashi[/name_m] (Japanese.)

[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] is such a pretty name and online middle names are honestly such a fun thing

I just got into this this past weekend, and I’m thrilled with it! Apparently my beloved Florence is a family name… I love the names I’m learning about, and they’re my relatives!? Incredible. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

To begin, my name is Hazel Elizabeth. :tulip: So, following these prompts, I would choose…

A version of your name that becomes your new legal name from now on?
Hmm, I’m not mad at Hazelle Elisabeth! Though, the doubles of -elle are a bit…much!

A neutral version of your name?
Hazel Ellis if I could keep my first name as is, but Zeal Ellis could be pretty cool too!

A masculine/feminine version of your name?
I think I’d make a nice Hal Elijah.

A version of your name in a different language?
I’d go with Ljeska Isobel (Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian, Slovak; Scottish).

An obscure version of your name?
Zélie Bess! I think this is sooo cute!

A cottagecore inspired version of your name?
It’s already pretty cottagecore, but to switch it up, perhaps Elise Hallie.

A dark academia inspired version of your name?
Zella Elsbeth could maybe suit?

A royalcore inspired version of your name?
Last but not least: Hazabelle Elsa, inspired by my favorite nicknames that folks have given me.
