Among some of my friends today, we were talking about how our dream houses would look, and I decided to bring up names for future kids (we are all around the age of fourteen). The only other girl who had thought about it said she’d have a boy and a girl named [name]Matthew[/name] and [name]Savannah[/name]. So, for fun, I decided to run through the more unusual names in my list, including the combos:
I was expecting some expressions of disbelief, and she gasped in horror. “It’s a good thing you’re not going to have a child for a long time. And by then, hopefully your husband can talk some sense into you.”
When I laughed at that, she said: “This sounds kind of mean, but I hope you never have a kid if you’re going to name them something like that.”
I took it in stride, because I was expecting something like that, but I’m really glad I’m young and not pregnant or TTC.
Haha I suppose I’m one of the ones unaffected by my time here. I would have had a similar reaction as her (although not nearly as blunt). The only name on your list I would deem usable is [name]Felicity[/name]. But hey, in my opinion, if you like the name, then that’s great. You’ve just got to understand that not everyone will. And, depending on where you live, the more unusual it is, the more complaints like that you get.
You have wonderful names picked out and none of them made me flinch!! I love to throw my ultimate guilty pleaure out at people… its [name]Ursula[/name] for a little girl and people are always shocked
I personally think you have much more mature and eclectic taste than most other kids your age. My favorites back then were horrendous for the most part! There are some real gems on your list in my opinion. I think your friend’s choices are a bit of a snooze fest to be honest. Your taste may change as you get older but I hope you won’t succumb to other’s harsh opinions just because you choose to go against the mainstream.
I thought it was going to be something hideous when I saw the thread title, but all of your list are lovely, not a hideousity among them! [name]Matthew[/name] I also quite like, but I much prefer [name]Susannah[/name] to [name]Savannah[/name]. It always reminds me of the desert, but in a bad way, not as in a hot, sandy place (like the beach…) Anyway. I have to say I prefer your name choices to hers.
Your names are fine. Some are quite beautiful, in fact. I love [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]. And from your signature, I love [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Eliora[/name]. They aren’t even that out there. Some of the names on your list are a little unusual - as in, not commonly used - but they are recognizable as established names and I’d describe most of them as elegant and a bit whimsical.
“This sounds kind of mean, but I hope you never have a kid if you’re going to name them something like that.”
I will change this to “This sounds kind of awesome, but I hope you have four girls so you can name them [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Saskia[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Isadora[/name].” Because those names are awesome and you have friends who are not as mature as you and will likely be jealous of your future children’s names. [name]Evander[/name] is actually on my own list.
What a great list, I particularly admire your names for girls. I agree with the others, please have lots of children eventually and use all of those beautiful names.
I get a lot of negative reactions to my list and I’m 28. 14 is a good age to learn that standing out from the crowd is actually awesome and what other people think really doesnt matter. I love your list!
I’m 18 almost 19 and even though my list has some fairly common names most my friends/family don’t like them. There’s nothing wrong with any of your names. I think you actually have better taste than my 17 year old sister in girls names (she’s traditional with boys, you can’t call traditional names bad. Lol.)
At 14 my favorite name was [name]Gabriel[/name] (which saddens me because it is forever off the table), [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Samantha[/name] and [name]Sarai[/name].
Any unusual name will get negative comments, just be prepared for it.
Hahah, I wouldn’t worry about it. At 14, most people are still in an “I like the names of my friends and the boys I have a crush on” phase, and you’re all likely to have a change in name taste by the time you have kids. Your names are very ‘now’ (for name nerds, and fashion-forward for everyone else) and in 10 years or so, I’d bet a few of your friends will have come around to most of these names… and you may have already moved on with the naming community
I’ll say that I’ve only said to one person that I love the name [name]Eulalia[/name]. I’m 26, and 98% of people I know have a very limited interest in names and an even smaller pool of acceptable names (most like pretty common, trendy names). I gave a presentation in my education psychology class today and had used the name [name]Eulalia[/name] in this story I had written. When I said ‘[name]Eulalia[/name]’ in front of the class, I heard a collective little gasp and a ring of “Oh wow! That’s pretty! So neat!” which really surprised me. Sometimes it just takes a little exposure in the right setting for people to come around to a name. I know I didn’t like [name]Eulalia[/name] until I was in [name]Barcelona[/name] for her [name]Saint[/name] [name]Day[/name].
I love the names on your list! I think you’ve got solid taste. [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Isadora[/name], and [name]Cordelia[/name] have all topped my list at various points, too!
This! I think your names are unusual, rich, intriguing, cool, and overall really great. I would be thrilled to meet a [name]Saskia[/name], [name]Evander[/name], [name]Isadora[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Zebediah[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name], or [name]Cordelia[/name]. Your friend is just rude.
They’re all lovely, really lovely. I love [name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Juno[/name] from your signature especially. [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] is just perfect too.
My friends are 15/16 and I tend to keep my love of names on the low. But they do seem to appear in conversation occasionally. And honestly I try not to sound overly-enthusiastic, but I love to throw out some of my more unusual favourites for the reaction.
I have one friend literally begging me to never inflict [name]Maude[/name] or [name]Agnes[/name] onto a child.
[name]Even[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] is too old-lady for them to handle, and I know 3 little girls with this name.
On the other hand I’ve been obsessed with this boy in my year since I overheard his say to his friends that he really liked the name [name]Jemima[/name].
I’m also around 14 years old, and I love your choices! [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], [name]Evander[/name], are all names I [name]LOVE[/name]. I never considered [name]Cyrus[/name], [name]Zebediah[/name], [name]Rune[/name], or [name]Adriano[/name] before, but I like them. They’re nms necessarily, but I find them intriguing, and I’d love to see them on a child. I like [name]Saskia[/name] too, but have an association with it that’s not the greatest. But it’s still really beautiful.
