I had a dream I had twin daughters named [name]Vigdis[/name] & [name]Dagmar[/name]. Vigdis and [name]Dagmar[/name]?! I like obscure Norwegian/ Norse names because of my heritage, and I’ve heard of both of these before ([name]Vigdis[/name] only very recently on the ‘Names No Girl [name]May[/name] be Cool Enough For’ list here on NB) but they aren’t names I’d ever considered. However, now I can’t get them out of my head, even though they both seem soooo clunky and heavy, but since they seem stuck in there, I wanted to know everyone’s thoughts on the names…
[name]Dagmar[/name] is really cool, for a boy…And [name]Vigdis[/name] is kinda attractive said aloud aswell. Catchy.
[name]Both[/name] are grounded boy names to me tho, definatly. Wish i had dreams about names, especially ones i have never heard of before.
I really like [name]Dagmar[/name], but I don’t have nordic heritage so I don’t think I’d ever use it. If I did, I would definitely consider it. I think it has the advantage of being cool and obscure but not too out there–there have been characters in movies and TV shows with this name, although I can’t think of any off hand…
To me, [name]Vigdis[/name] is too clunky. It might not work for the American tongue due to the “gd” combo.
I like [name]Dagmar[/name], in a way. It has a very Nordic feel to me, but I think it would be a really cool MN. I met someone once who wanted to name her daughter [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Valentina[/name] [name]Dagmar[/name] [name]Louise[/name] [surname], and it had a lot of family significance to her, so I thought it was lovely. While I would never use it, I do like it a lot and think it pairs really well as a MN for a more European FN. [name]Vigdis[/name]… lol, sorry, yeah, I don’t think anything could make that cool enough to use.
You’re lucky you end up dreaming about names you end up curious about! I always seem turned off to the names the minute I wake up, lol.
They do seem very clunky. I want to like them, but just can’t. I agree with sol that [name]Dagmar[/name] would be a great boys name.I might be the only one but with the V and the G I can’t help but see a name for girl lady parts in [name]Vigdis[/name]. I don’t know if kids would see that and use it to bully or not, but I know that would keep me from using that name.
My favorite girl name that has norwegian heritage is [name]Solveig[/name]. It is soft and pretty to me.
Good luck, sorry to be crass
Thanks for the feedback! Yikes, I can’t imagine [name]Dagmar[/name] on a boy, it seems so tired to girls for me (though I can see why if I didn’t know the name it might look like one for the boys) even though its not really my style.
@kupcakes: I know [name]Dagmar[/name] is the name of the doctor in [name]Lars[/name] and the Real Girl
@kirb: I actually have quite a few [name]Solveig[/name]'s in my family tree!
