Reginald?

Usually I find the nameberry blurbs for individual names right on, but I disagree with their current assessment of [name_m]Reginald[/name_m]: “The chap in the smoking jacket in a 1930’s drawing room comedy.”

Not that I don’t love such comedies (and such chaps, for that matter), but I actually think [name_m]Reginald[/name_m] is a wonderful name.

  1. It has a regal air without being pumped full of self-esteem like [name_m]King[/name_m], [name_u]Majesty[/name_u], [name_m]Royal[/name_m], or [name_f]Marvel[/name_f].

  2. It is a full name with history and substance, an adult name.

  3. It is not common like [name_u]Mason[/name_u], nor is it outlandish like [name_m]Caliban[/name_m].

  4. It has wonderfully chipper nicknames such as [name_m]Reg[/name_m] and [name_u]Reggie[/name_u].

  5. It is English and suggests a man with a good sense of humor who loves gardening and cats. It manages to be both manly and gentlemanly. Take that, Stryker, [name_m]Rocky[/name_m], and [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]!

What do you think?

[name_m]Reginald[/name_m] is a tricky one for me. On the one hand, I think it has some vintage coolness, but on the other, it has such a high-brow, upper-crust image to me that I have a hard time imagining it on a “regular” adult, a teacher or mechanic or whatever… much less a child. I do love [name_u]Reggie[/name_u] as a nickname, though.

I love it! I see a stately man, but full of humor and easy confidence. If we ever get around to having a third son (we only have one now and the next name is locked in) he’ll be [name_m]Reginald[/name_m], nn [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. I also don’t min the 1930’s chap vibe—vintage swagger, what’s not to like?! And [name_u]Rex[/name_u] is great for me, because of [name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], of course.

I completely agree with you, love [name_m]Reginald[/name_m]. Very dapper.

[name_m]Reginald[/name_m] is a great name, plus I like the nickname [name_u]Reggie[/name_u].
