Reinventing my Moms name, for the sake of tradition

Here is the thing. My mom’s name is [name]Tilly[/name] and her grandmother’s name was [name]Tillie[/name]. My name is [name]Annette[/name] and my grandmother’s was the same. I do not want to be the first one along the line who breaks the hole naming your kid after your mother train, but I want something new and fresh. [name]Tilly[/name] is just weird. I have wrestled with names like [name]Matilda[/name] and just [name]Tilda[/name] which is popular in [name]Sweden[/name], but I want something even newer and fresher. I am looking for ideas. Thank you.

[name]Clotilde[/name]- love this name, she can be [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Chloe[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name]/[name]Ottila[/name]/[name]Ottilia[/name]
[name]Tilden[/name]/Tildan
Tillea
Atilia/Attilie

[name]Ottilie[/name] does seems to fit the bill. I say it the [name]German[/name] way Oht-till-eeah (my grandmother was [name]Ottilie[/name] and [name]German[/name]) and I think it’s the best  but in the US you’ll get people saying oh-[name]TILL[/name]-ee
I also like [name]Tilda[/name] by itself (like [name]Tilda[/name] Swenton).

Others:

Atilia
Bertila – she could be [name]Berry[/name] too
Bertilda
Botilda
[name]Clotilde[/name]
[name]Domitilla[/name]
Estila
Etilka
Nantilde
Quintilia
Rutilia
Shantille
Tutilina
Vaetilda

Those are all the [name]Til[/name] containing names I could fine

[name]Tilly[/name] is adorable! You’ve gotten a lot of suggestions, and I’m not sure I could top it, but my only idea was [name]Elisabeth[/name] nn [name]Tilly[/name]. I know it’s a bit of a stretch, but it was the only name remotely close to something I would like to use (nice as [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Ottilie[/name], [name]Clotilda[/name], etc., are, they aren’t for me), and it could still keep to your family tradition if you use the nn [name]Tilly[/name].

Good luck!

You could give her the first name [name]Tilly[/name] but call her by her middle name if you can’t find any versions of [name]Tilly[/name] that you like

What a great idea!

I know it’s borderline made-up/non-name like, but I read something with a girl named [name]Chantilly[/name] once.

You might also want to spell [name]Matilda[/name] with an H - [name]Mathilda[/name]. Or [name]Matilde[/name]/[name]Mathilde[/name].

[name]Tinsley[/name]
Timila
Tiltilla
Timandra
[name]Natalie[/name]/Nadalie
Tillantha

Some that might be a stretch:
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Juliette[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Valentina[/name]
[name]Tahlia[/name]
[name]Odette[/name]
[name]Odila[/name]
[name]Taylor[/name]

I think I have settled on Tilliana, kind of like [name]Lillian[/name] or [name]Lilliana[/name], but with a T. I would still love to hear suggestions though, and I am all for made up names.

I like the name [name]Chantilly[/name], it is very cute, but I am afraid it is not feminine enough, but I love made up names that sound like real names.

[name]Chantilly[/name] isn’t made up… it’s a city and ever heard of [name]Chantilly[/name] lace?

But it is cute I guess… I wouldn’t use it because it makes me think of lace…

I’m sorry but I love [name]Tilly[/name] ! More than that I love [name]Matilda[/name] in fact it was recently scratched off my list because my husband is not a fan. I also liked the suggestion of [name]Tilda[/name] but I’d add an H. Tildah is much prettier in my opinion.

You could name her [name]Mildred[/name], and call her [name]Millie[/name], but that’s still a though name.sorry I couldn’t help more, but good luck!

i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]. Tilliana seems like a nice solution, though.

I love [name]Ottilie[/name], or [name]Ottoline[/name] like the character in [name]Rupert[/name]. [name]Ottilie[/name] is prettier though. [name]One[/name] of my relatives was called [name]Annette[/name] and she didn’t like it because it sounded like “a net”, which got attention in school.
I’ve heard of a [name]Chantelle[/name] called [name]Tilly[/name], although it doesn’t really make sense. Also, Trillie, which was a username online but I think it would make a really pretty forename - a prettier variation of Trinnie. If you wanted to go the really contemporary route there’s Netley, which could lead to [name]Tillie[/name] or [name]Netta[/name] while linked to [name]Annette[/name] - but don’t use Netley anywhere that Tetley tea is sold. That’s all I can think of.

I am not interested in naming a child after myself, but thanks for your thoughts. I do love my name [name]Annette[/name], people do make name jokes because of the “a net” thing, but I like the uniqueness of it. I also like my nickname “netty”.

I understand where you are coming from, but my grandmother and my great grandmother are dead. It is also a family tradition to name your kids after their grandparents, so I do plan to name a child after my mother in law. My moms and her siblings names were [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Marcy[/name] and [name]Florence[/name] named after [name]Tillie[/name], Henrdrick, [name]Martin[/name] and [name]Flora[/name].
