Mom of 3 - 2 girls ([name_f]Audrey[/name_f] & [name_f]Layla[/name_f]) and soon to be boy. After looking through 1000 boy names we landed on one - [name_u]Remington[/name_u]. Like fall over in love. Then my husband told my naive/ignorant/unknown self that [name_u]Remington[/name_u] is a gun maker. What!!! I knew [name_m]Colt[/name_m], Winchester…but no idea of [name_u]Remington[/name_u]. We moved to [name_u]Texas[/name_u] two years ago from Chicago and now I can’t get over the thought he’ll have be held to a complex based on his name. Is a gun the first thing people think of when they hear [name_u]Remington[/name_u]? I’m just so torn now.
Feedback, opinions, thoughts, experience with the name appreciated.
I didn’t think of the gun maker until I read it here and went “oh yeah”. Although i’m not from [name_u]Texas[/name_u] and [name_m]Ive[/name_m] heard people from there really like their guns, so maybe more people local to you would make the connection.
[name_m]Ive[/name_m] never personally met anyone with that name, but it sounds trendy and like it would fit in with all the other names these days.
Congratulations on your little boy to be! My honest opinion: yep the gun maker is my first thought, and I’m in Australia where that is not even front of mind… having said that if it’s a name you are head over heels for, it only matters if it matters to you both. Best wishes with your search.
I did not think of the gun maker but I know nothing about guns. I know it as a surname. I would float it by some of your neighbors, or by people who do know some stuff about guns. I do not think the name would cause a conflict. You are not considering: Slug, [name_u]Shell[/name_u] [name_m]Case[/name_m], Shotgun, [name_u]Pistol[/name_u], Bullet, etc.
I too think of guns, but my husband is a gun collector and a hunter. I don’t think that it’ll cause your child to have a complex, but you will need to decide if the association is too much for you. Using the nickname [name_m]Rem[/name_m] or [name_u]Remy[/name_u] would help it not be as associated with the gun maker.
Suggestions if it is too much for you, then maybe look into surnames that can be used as firsts as that’s the feel I get from the name.
Im not in the US and suggested this name to my husband and he straight away mentioned the gunmaker so that was that …
instead we have just [name_u]Remy[/name_u] on our list which is a french name
Guns are the first thing I think of and for some people in the US that can be a very divisive thing. Personally, I have very strong opinions on the issue and it makes me feel a certain way (not at all attempting to debate second amendment or gun control). it may be a lot to saddle a kid with that name-- but maybe I’m in the minority to feel that way or even make the association.
I didn’t know about the gun maker, but I’m no gun aficionado.
TBH, when I hear [name_u]Remington[/name_u] I think of the default male maid from The [name_m]Sims[/name_m] 2, since his name was [name_u]Remington[/name_u] [name_m]Harris[/name_m]. Probably nobody else will, though ;).
Here in Australia, [name_u]Remington[/name_u] is also a brand of haircare products. Like, hair dryers and such. That’s what I think of, didn’t know about the gun thing.
