In the Rennaisance - especially in [name]Italy[/name] and [name]France[/name] - aristocratic, literate people started reviving names from Ancient Greek and [name]Rome[/name], many of which hadn’t been used for centuries. You can see this pattern in European royal families - suddenly there were Princes and Princesses named [name]Diana[/name] and [name]Hercules[/name].
Of course, keep in mind that for every [name]Achilles[/name] there were twenty Johns. Most of these wouldn’t be very realistic in your typical English village.
@sugarplumfairy - We seem to have very similar name taste, I love [name]Ginevra[/name] and I’m happy to see someone else likes Athénaïs!! I’m still trying to convince my husband to let me use it.
