Replacing a Name on Our List for Baby Boy

After narrowing our list for [name]Baby[/name] if it’s a Girl list down, many names fell out because they didn’t have enough myth or history to them. And then we realized one of our boy names has none (or almost none) as well. [name]Theron[/name] is lovely, and it does mean hunter, but there is no myth to the name (apart from Potnia [name]Theron[/name] “[name]Queen[/name] of the [name]Wild[/name] Animals”). Maybe a possible future [name]Theron[/name] would feel left out with epically myth named brothers [name]Orpheus[/name], [name]Endymion[/name], [name]Orion[/name] and [name]Herne[/name]? So we are looking for a replacement.

Our list (speak your mind, we can take it):
[name]Adonis[/name]
[name]Castor[/name]
[name]Damon[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
Hylas
[name]Icarus[/name]
[name]Jason[/name]
[name]Perseus[/name]
[name]Pollux[/name]
[name]Priam[/name]
Pythias

If you have any suggestions, that would be lovely too. We don’t want major gods or evil dudes. They need myth or history to the name.

our girl list: Belphoebe, [name]Ceridwen[/name], Hespera, Illyria, Tinuviel (Niniane).

Thank you so much!

Great idea!

[name]Adonis[/name] is too much to live up to; [name]Castor[/name] = castor oil nowadays (rather than [name]Castor[/name] & [name]Pollux[/name]); [name]Pollux[/name] is a bit too reminiscent of ‘pox’ and ‘bollocks,’ and [name]Icarus[/name] met a rather sticky end due to his own stupidity. I’m on the fence about the usability of [name]Priam[/name] (Prius? Pram?) and Hylas (alas? hilam?).

I think [name]Damon[/name], [name]Hector[/name], [name]Jason[/name], [name]Perseus[/name] and Pythias are great jumping-off points.

I would also suggest:

[name]Lysander[/name] (lovely legend)
[name]Gavain[/name]
Aelfwin / Alfwyn / [name]Elvyn[/name]: “elf-friend,” an old Ancient Germanic/ Anglo-[name]Saxon[/name] name
[name]Theseus[/name] (the greatest hero in the Greek myths)
[name]Cadmus[/name] (supposedly taught the Greeks to read and write, revered as a scholar-hero)
[name]Seneca[/name] (depending on your feelings towards Stoicism)
[name]Aurelian[/name] (the emporer, or [name]Aurelius[/name] after [name]Marcus[/name] [name]Aurelius[/name])
[name]Roland[/name] (as in [name]Chanson[/name] de-- the medieval hero)
Faramond (the mythical founder-king of the Franks, supposedly a Trojan)

ooh, thanks Bladey! I was thinking those things you said, especially about [name]Pollux[/name] and [name]Adonis[/name]. I love the names you suggested, [name]Gavain[/name], [name]Theseus[/name], [name]Seneca[/name], [name]Roland[/name] and Faramond are amazing! Thank you!

I love [name]Hector[/name] and [name]Perseus[/name] from this list. However, I’m thinking that [name]Hector[/name] might seem a little serious next to the rest of your list, and his “or” ending would run into both [name]Orpheus[/name] and [name]Orion[/name]. Loving blade’s suggestions of [name]Lysander[/name] and [name]Theseus[/name].

Oh good, I love your posts! I love [name]Perseus[/name] from your list and really like blade’s suggestion of [name]Lysander[/name]. I’m not nearly as creative as you and blade, so I have nothing to contribute, :frowning: but I do [name]LOVE[/name] your name lists!

tk: I pronounce [name]Hector[/name] HEK-tuh, no -r ending (british!). I love [name]Theseus[/name] too, but [name]Ariadne[/name] just made a possible return to my girl list, so I don’t know.

dindlee: thank you, that’s so sweet. I think [name]Perseus[/name] is pretty cool! [name]Lysander[/name] is a bit frilly for my taste though…

Well, that sasses it up quite a bit, so just disregard my comment

Ok [name]Ottilie[/name], before I comment… I like what you did with the girls but your boy names are pretty perfect so don’t get too distracted from your already awesome list.

[name]Damon[/name] and [name]Hector[/name] have always been favorites of mine, so I really want to love them for you, but in this case I fear that they are not as lyrical as what you’re looking for. Same with [name]Jason[/name]. Maybe better as middles? [name]Adonis[/name], [name]Castor[/name] and [name]Pollux[/name] are probably not usable. You have plenty of better namesakes than [name]Icarus[/name] and [name]Priam[/name]. Hylas and Pythias are rather nice, but [name]Perseus[/name] is fantastic!!
He is the clear winner of this round, haha.

For what it’s worth, I like [name]Theseus[/name] much better than [name]Ariadne[/name] and I was glad that [name]Blade[/name] suggested it. =]

But he ABANDONED [name]Ariadne[/name]! Ok, so [name]Dionysus[/name] fell in love with her, and they got married and all, but still.

My favourites are [name]Perseus[/name], [name]Jason[/name] (maybe mostly because of the myth though. He was super awesome!), Pythias and [name]Hector[/name]. And [name]Roland[/name] and Faramond.

I’m only replacing [name]Theron[/name], no one else. I’m seriously in love with all my four boy names.

The Names I like:
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Perseus[/name]
Hylas

The Names I’d cut (if I didn’t list a reason it’s because I agree with a reason given in a pp):
[name]Adonis[/name], [name]Castor[/name], [name]Damon[/name] (I always first read Demon and then think of the Vampire Diaries), [name]Icarus[/name], [name]Jason[/name] (I think this is a little tame in comparison to your other choices), [name]Pollux[/name], and Pythias (too close to Python in my accent).

Oh ok, good! I’m in love with your other boy names too, haha.
(Plus, getting to type these names out during the evolution of your posts just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like I’m reconciling with old friends). So then what I think I’m seeing here… [name]Perseus[/name] is still the winner? I mean you’ve gotta hand it to him, he was Awesome. Also thought I mentioned it before but [name]Roland[/name] should 100% be up for middle name consideration. =]

[name]Theron[/name] < Theseus < Perseus

I will be sad to see [name]Theron[/name] go, but I understand.

[name]Perseus[/name], I love. He fits right in with the other boys, and how cute is nn [name]Percy[/name]?? And I immediately pounced on [name]Castor[/name]. The [name]Castor[/name]/[name]Pollux[/name] connection was instantaneous; I did not even think of [name]Castor[/name] oil! I am a huge fan of this name.

Also love [name]Damon[/name], but you should know he’s one smoking hot third of the Vampire Diaries love triangle, so unless you’re going for the bad boy image, I’d steer clear.

Veto points go to [name]Hector[/name], Hylas, [name]Priam[/name] (Prius is all I hear, and people [name]LOVE[/name] to hate on that car), [name]Icarus[/name] (agree with [name]Blade[/name] on the myth), and Pythias (When I say this aloud, I feel like I’m spitting it out. Like Pythooee, you know?). Also, if the myth is what appeals to you in [name]Jason[/name], why not [name]Odysseus[/name]?

Suggestions:
[name]Androcles[/name] (do [name]Aesop[/name]'s Fables count as mythology?)
[name]Atlas[/name] - My husband thinks this is literally too heavy for a child, but I’m in love with it. In addition to the powerful myth, there’s the explorer connotations!
[name]Silvanus[/name] - Definitely brings to mind images of deep woods all bright and shadowed
[name]Evander[/name] - son of [name]Hermes[/name], credited with founding [name]Rome[/name], the Greek alphabet, and the pantheon
Andreus - son of the river Peneius
[name]Thurston[/name] - Norse, meaning “[name]Thor[/name]'s stone”
Vertumnus - god of the seasons (the Tumnus part is totally appealing to the Narnian freak in me!)
[name]Caspar[/name] - one of the [name]Magi[/name] as well as a Mayan god-king
Hyperion - god of watchfulness, wisdom, and light, Titan and astronomer, father of [name]Selene[/name], [name]Eos[/name], and [name]Helios[/name]
[name]Argo[/name] - the ship in which [name]Jason[/name] and the others sailed on their quest for the [name]Golden[/name] Fleece
Remiel - one of the seven archangels, who shepherds souls to heaven and brings divine visions. [name]Angel[/name] of hope, mercy, and compassion
Perun - Slavic god of thunder, lightning, and rain who ruled from the World Tree
Cernunnos - the horned god of nature, takes the form of a stag
Siliniez - Polish woodland god to whom moss was sacred
[name]Vidar[/name] - son of [name]Odin[/name] who avenges his father’s death at Ragnarok. I love the meaning: “forest warrior”
Ampheon - musician and husband of [name]Niobe[/name]; charmed stones to build fortifications for Thebes

amydomsmom: Thank you! I really love [name]Perseus[/name]!

sleepysessha: [name]Theron[/name] will just be moved to the middle spot. I had no idea there was a [name]Damon[/name] on that tv show (I haven’t really paid attention to it). [name]Odysseus[/name] is amazing, I thought maybe too much for a child? Or maybe not… Of your suggestions I love and will consider [name]Evander[/name], Remiel and Hyperion (how could I forget about this one?). I also love [name]Atlas[/name], but I can’t use it. Punished to carry heaven on his shoulders for all eternity? Perun is cute as a button, but I think of prunes and I hate those. [name]Argo[/name] is fantastic, I might rethink this. I just don’t want people to think I named my kid after the movie (although it was amazing). Vertumnus is great too, but there’s this painting of him that has constantly freaked me out since I was really little.

Boyfriend said no to [name]Hector[/name] and [name]Jason[/name] (because of [name]Eric[/name] Bana and [name]Jason[/name] Isaacs…). So list is:

[name]Castor[/name]
Perseus
[name]Theseus[/name]
[name]Gawain[/name]
Faramond
Hyperion
Remiel
[name]Odysseus[/name]

[name]Argo[/name]?

I personally think [name]Odysseus[/name] is just as wearable as [name]Jason[/name], just less mainstream (and therefore more appealing!). He fits so well with the rest of your boys’ names!

I like [name]Perseus[/name] over [name]Theseus[/name]…but I’m terribly biased. I never liked [name]Theseus[/name] even when I was a kid, lol. I still remember my glowering 7-year-old disapproval when I found out he just let [name]Dionysus[/name] take [name]Ariadne[/name] (after all that!)

I hadn’t even thought of the movie [name]Argo[/name], so some people may not make the connection. It’s up to you though. I do love the sound of it, sort of a rugged strength.

You’re always so inspiring, [name]Ottilie[/name]! Talking names with you really gets my creativity flowing

[name]Castor[/name] - I actually really like this! Very nice sound and options for nn’s. It has a playfully elegant feel for me.
[name]Perseus[/name] - I like this but don’t love it. After [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] [name]Percy[/name] will always have a vaguely soft feel to me, but I do like the myth. And [name]Percy[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] is a lot of fun–reviving the myths.
[name]Theseus[/name] - I like it, but it has a very serious/heavy feel for me. Maybe because of the sound but maybe because of it’s similarity to thesaurus.
[name]Gawain[/name] - I think this is a more familiar character. I like it, but don’t love it. The sound just isn’t as attractive to me as some of the others.
Faramond - this is gorgeous! the [name]Fara[/name] part feels rather feminine to me, but it really is a fabulous name. I was just introduced to Faraday a few days ago, and I love that one as well!
Hyperion - the sound is great, but I think the “hyper” part would be very distracting to people (especially children) hearing the name for the first time who weren’t aware of it’s history
Remiel - love this one! unique but lovely with a great sound
[name]Odysseus[/name] - not as attractive as some, makes me want to nn [name]Odi[/name]!
[name]Argo[/name] - interesting, though with the recent movie people might connect your choice to that.

[name]Perseus[/name] was on my boy list. [name]Love[/name] it. The other one that jumped out was Hylas. I’ve never heard of it but it’s lovely.

I’m soooo hoping you have a girl so that you call her Belphoebe! I can’t tell you how much I’ve fallen in love with that name since you posted about it!!!

I do love your boys names too though!

from this list: I love Hylas & [name]Priam[/name] - I think Hylas is my favourite though.

[name]Damon[/name], [name]Hector[/name] & [name]Jason[/name] are great names but almost seem too mainstream among your other choices. [name]Adonis[/name] and [name]Icarus[/name] I think are slightly too much to live up to, and sadly [name]Castor[/name] does just make me think of “Oil”…otherwise it would be a great name

Thanks you guys! First, Castor is out. When I was little I loved looking through my parents art books, and there was a few paintings that creeped me out, and one of them was “The rape of the daughters of Leucippus by Castor and Pollux” by Rubens. That painting is horrible, it still leaves me with a sickening feeling in my whole body. No more Castor.

sleepyshessha: I have the same feeling about Theseus, I’ve been mad with him forever because of that! Besides, I love Ariadne. I let Endymion win over Selene, Orpheus over Eurydice; I need to let Ariadne win over Theseus and get one for the girls. My main problem with Odysseus: he was a bastard (Sean Bean was smoking hot in Troy, but apart from that…). He had long lasting affairs and children and needed to disguise himself to see if Penelope had been true to him. But he was awesome too. (Just a little rant!)

kalaway: Yay, one for Faramond! I really like this, it’s so cute. And Remiel too, I think it’s super!

ellemenopeee: Thanks, I love Hylas too. I’m thinking a middle? There’s a gorgeous painting of him being “taken” by the water nymphs, I love it!

hayley: Thank you! I love Belphoebe too, it’s amazing. My boyfriend and I took a stroll yesterday evening, and it was the full moon, and it was kind of cloudy and starry at the same time and the moon and the stars reflected in the canal, and it was really cold, and it all made me think of Belphoebe. And one more likes Hylas, yay! I love Hylas…

I just thought (or rather, we’ve been watching some lord of the rings and I got inspired) of… Faramir and Haldir (I know he wasn’t that important in the books, but I love Haldir in the movie!)?

Yeah, Haldir from the movie was way cooler (and HOT). Opposites on Faramir though, his character in the book is one of my faves, and I don’t really like the way they portray him in the movie as much (at least he’s still good-looking though;)). Oh yeah, and his name is awesome.

I agree, Faramir in the book is amazing. Haldir in the book was forgettable, but in the movie he is such a badass!
Based on the sound alone I prefer Faramir to Haldir and to Faramund. Did you read through the credits? =]
