[name]Hi[/name]! I’ve been a long-time Nameberry fan, but this is my first-time posting. I am desperately seeking opinions from the ultimate naming experts! We are expecting our first baby in just a few weeks and the gender is unknown. My husband and I have been back and forth on SO many names and now it’s time to narrow-down our list for boys.
Our last name is [name]Charles[/name], which we feel limits some of our choices. We would like to use [name]Robert[/name] as the middle name to honor my father-in-law. And when I say “we would like” I mean that my husband will not budge on [name]Robert[/name] being the middle name
Here’s our list of boy’s names (in priority order):
[name]Archer[/name]
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Holden[/name]
[name]Maxwell[/name]
For a girl, we seem to be netting out on [name]Harper[/name] [name]Jane[/name], however, I am worried that [name]Harper[/name] is too trendy and that everyone will always be thinking of the [name]Beckham[/name]'s. But I really love the name [name]Harper[/name] for our little girl – should I let the [name]Beckham[/name] thing bother me if that’s my only worry?
As you can probably tell, we really like the sound of the “er” ending names with our last name. What do you all think? I really appreciate any and all opinions. As [name]Baby[/name] C’s arrival gets closer I’m starting to doubt our choices - Argh!
Although I love [name]Archer[/name], I feel like the “ch’s” run together in [name]Archer[/name] [name]Charles[/name] a bit… I think all your boy choices are great, honestly. I have an [name]Asher[/name], so I’m biased towards that one, and [name]Silas[/name] is on my shortlist for the next, if we’re so blessed. [name]Maxwell[/name] and [name]Holden[/name] are lovely… I love The Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name], so [name]Holden[/name]'s always held a place in my heart! I’d say that [name]Holden[/name] is actually my favorite for you, I think [name]Holden[/name] [name]Robert[/name] [name]Charles[/name] has a great flow as a full name.
As far as [name]Harper[/name] goes, it’s honestly never been a favorite of mine, although I can definitely see the appeal! If you’re worried about the starbaby connection… would you consider switching it to [name]Jane[/name] [name]Harper[/name]? Other ideas with “er”-sound endings: [name]Aster[/name], [name]Briar[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Honor[/name], [name]Skylar[/name], [name]Summer[/name]?
I think [name]Harper[/name] [name]Jane[/name] [name]Charles[/name] sounds absolutely perfect. Does it really matter if it’s going through a popularity spike? I’m sure that in a little while the world will have moved onto another name, and Harpers will be rare.
As far as boys go, I think that my favourite two are [name]Asher[/name] [name]Robert[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Robert[/name]. [name]Asher[/name] works well with your last name and offers you the nickname [name]Ash[/name]. I like [name]Maxwell[/name], but my only reservation is that if you’re going to call him [name]Max[/name] most of the time, it doesn’t work as well with your last name. [name]Max[/name] [name]Charles[/name] just doesn’t flow as well, you know?
All in all, my picks are [name]Harper[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Asher[/name] [name]Robert[/name].
I would go with [name]Silas[/name], [name]Asher[/name], or [name]Maxwell[/name] for a boy. [name]Archer[/name] [name]Charles[/name] is a tongue twister, and [name]Archer[/name] and [name]Holden[/name] both feel like “backwards names” to me. For example at my work we have people write their last name on the top line, then their first name on the second line of our pick-up slips. A lot of people get confused and switch them so occasionally we have accidents. I called a family looking for someone named M@x [name]Jack[/name]-son the other day thinking they’d confused the lines only to realize his name was [name]Jack[/name]-son M@x. I feel like [name]Archer[/name] or [name]Holden[/name] [name]Charles[/name] would get mistaken for [name]Charles[/name] [name]Archer[/name] or [name]Charles[/name] [name]Holden[/name] a lot when seeing the name in writing.
I love [name]HARPER[/name]! I also love [name]ARCHER[/name]! They are both on my list but you can’t use them as sibsets Too similar
Either way they are my picks! [name]Love[/name] love love them
Thanks, everyone, for your awesome feedback. We are heavily leaning towards [name]Asher[/name] now as our #1 choice for boy names. I love the name [name]Holden[/name], but wasn’t sold on it and I think it’s because of the reason pointed out – that in combo with our last name it’s difficult to tell which is the first name vs. the last name. The same goes for [name]Archer[/name] with the additional complication of being difficult to say in conjunction with our last name. [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] are still contenders, but we’re feeling like this little one might be an [name]Asher[/name] [name]Robert[/name]!
I also appreciate the feedback on [name]Harper[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. My own name is strong but feminine and rather unique (in the sense that I’ve only met one or two other people with my name) and I’ve come to appreciate it more and more over the years – particularly professionally. I kind of want the same for my daughter and I feel like [name]Harper[/name] offers that. I just needed some extra confidence that in 20 years from now her name won’t constantly be associated with the [name]Beckham[/name]’s.
Thanks again for the helpful feedback. My confidence is restored !
[name]Archer[/name] - The ‘Rs’ run together in Archer and Robert and the ‘Ch’ run together in Archer and Charles.
[name]Asher[/name] - The ‘Rs’ run together in [name]Ashe[/name]r and Robert.
[name]Silas[/name] - [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Charles[/name] have the same ending sound, which messes up the flow
[name]Holden[/name] - Nice. I like it.
[name]Maxwell[/name] - My favorite. [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Robert[/name] is so handsome.
I like [name]Harper[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. I never thought about the [name]Beckham[/name]'s, but I do think it is getting popular and trendy.
